I have got that impression from what I've observed this gen. Would you disagree?

You made the claim, back it up, lol. There might be argument to be made that many games treaded the waters of last gen, which of course leads to less enthusiastic reviews... but besides that?

To think that an hour before reviews dropped, I doubted Miyazaki. Months of hype and I faltered because as always, I misinterpreted some vague tweets. Man...sorry bro.

Well, looks like I'm buying Bloodborne. I wasn't a big fan of Dark Souls/Demon Souls, but I've loved everything I've seen of this, and the unanimously fantastic reviews....hnnnng.

PS4's flagship game is here.

I never played a souls game but I kind of want to get this because of the hype. I don't have a ps4 but I can easily mooch on my brother's if the hype consumes me.

I don't know. I credit most of Dark Souls success due to the word of mouth cult following Demon's Souls had.

Going multiplat helped more. PC and Xbox are so popular that I believe Dark Souls sold better on Xbox in the States.

Add also the memes that came from this, which spread Dark Souls popularity even more. Most probably dont even know about Demon's.

I'm interested to see how Sony advertises this and if it can be a big seller, though Dark Souls sold like 2.3 million altogether.

The reviews got me so excited I am thinking about not picking up my best buy copy tomorrow and dl this tonight...

and what is stevivor? Does anyone here follow them? I am not trying to be mean or accuse them of looking for click bait but honestly that review felt like it was written by a teenager. A quick search shows that the person from Australia that uses the stevivor name has only a level 7 trophy rank on his psn (between the ps3/ps4 and vita he has played 53 games and not completed a lot of them) but has 250,000 achievement points, and 635 games played on the xbox/xbox one.

The funny thing is Shuhei Yoshida passed on Sony publishing Demon's Souls worldwide because he didn't think it would do well outside of Japan. It was created by From and SCE in Japan, but when it came time to publish out outside of Japan, Atlus got the rights for NA/EU and Bandai Namco got AU/NZ. If only they knew what they had...

What? Shu works on the development side, not publishing, that screw up was on SCEA and SCEE. And Namco published in EU.

Furiously skimming this slew of content and watching Patrick Klepek's stream. Only complaint I really saw so far has been load times. Amazing.

Yoshida had no control over that. He's said that each region of Sony has people that determine which games are localized. All he can do is greenlight games for development.

I found this article from Edge. I got it from a quick Yahoo search, but when you click on the link, it takes you to another article. The actual article only shows up when you click on the cached page.

Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida admits that he thought Demon's Souls – a game Sony had the opportunity to publish – was "crap … unbelievably bad."

Speaking to Game Informer, Yoshida said that when he first saw Demon's Souls it was a mess, with framerate problems and no network features, and that as such Sony opted against picking up the publishing rights.

"Game development in Japan typically is made horizontally, where all assets are made in parallel, so it's difficult to figure out what the final state of the game is going to be," he said. "The western-style game development is typically a vertical slice. So in the very early process, the team tried to create a small piece of the experience that resembles the final product.

"What happened with Demon's Souls was until very late in the game's development, we were not able to play the game through. There were framerate issues and the network was not up and running. We underestimated the quality of the game and to be honest, the media in Japan did the same.

"For my personal experience with Demon's Souls, when it was close to final I spent close to two hours playing it, and after two hours I was still standing at the beginning of the game.

"I said, 'This is crap. This is an unbelievably bad game.' So I put it aside."

The final product, of course, was much better, and Atlus, in North America, and Namco in Europe picked up the publishing rights to the game, which far outstripped initial sales expectations. Sony admitted in 2010 that its failure to publish the game was "a mistake."

These are some seriously impressive review scores. I mean, it doesn't change my opinion one way or another. I'll know how I feel once I play it. But hopefully these scores encourage sales so that we can keep this franchise going. I love everything Miyazaki does.

Wait a second, I don't see Polygon's score? Is it not out yet? To be clear I'M NOT MAKING A JOKE I'm honestly wondering if they have posted their review yet or not.

Kadokawa want to expand their gaming division so i doubt they sell FROM to Sony. But if Sony offer a good price, why not

If Sony did that, would they own Dark Souls too? That'd be crazy.

But I doubt it'd happen. From is a lot more than Souls, and they'd have to buy it all. If Kadokawa is even willing to sell, and why sell when From making more money than ever?

Really sad this broke Sterling's site -- I wanted to read his review the most.

"Stab 'em up!"

I managed to load the page. Here's a choice paragraph from his review:

Jim Sterling said:
Bloodborne is every bit a psychological horror game as it is one about swinging swords and leveling up, perhaps one of the most effective horror experiences you could hope to have. It’s beautifully bleak, a sublime exercise in unyielding mental oppression. It’s a game so stressful it makes my neck hurt, and so brutal in its punishments that every success brings unmatched elation. Taking the very best of Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls, From Software has produced a near perfect example of its uniquely malevolent gameplay, all while amping up the brutality to stunning degrees.

Jim Sterling said:
Bloodborne is as glorious as it is grotesque, a harsh and unyielding exercise in getting battered mercilessly while feeling encouraged the whole painful way. While very much a Souls game through and through, the switch from methodical and slow progression to a faster, ultimately more savage environment provides just enough of a twist to give it a wholly unique feel, a more empowering journey, for both the player and the opposition. Bloodborne is something truly special – a barbaric horror RPG that will giveth and taketh away in perfect measure, wrapped up in a perverse world that will refuse to let you go.

Sony better do this game justice with advertising... Just look at these review scores... They will have a commercial by the end of next week with these review scores pasted all over the commercial... They should considering most publishers love to do that and most of their games don't approach this level of acclaim ..

They've been advertising it heavily now. Showing it during The Walking Dead as well as other shows.

Don't worry. They'll have commercials out soon with all the review scores.

This game launched at an interesting time. The next big game is MKX on April 14th.

He isn't reviewing it

Remember, Polygon decides on the score as a "team" They read the written review and then decide on the score as a group.. Gies will have input on the score regardless if he is reviewing it or not....

However, the Polygon reviewer appears to be loving it based on his review in process....

Good to see it is reviewing well, but hesitant since all of these are before the online is fully out.

Hopefully load times get shortened, frame rate issues improve, and the online is smooth.
