MACROSS (pronounced Delta) ~~ ~~

They've seen them, they just don't like M7 and Frontier. I'm quite American and even I can like M7, Frontier and Delta and you don't have to go too far into this thread to get my initial feelings about Delta when I first saw it.

Well that's even weirder because Zero is the worst thing Macross (well other than Macross II, but that doesn't count).

Lol I had no idea Zero was that bad since I've never seen it before, nor Macross 2. I guess neither is really worth my time then.

It's not bad, just not as good as the rest and not worth putting on a pedestal. Macross II you shouldn't watch (it's non canon except to be made fun of in Mac 7), but Zero is still worth watching and actually ties into Frontier.

The order i have watched Macross is all out of order.

Zero
M7
Frontier
Plus (this January)
Delta

Now just watching SDF. Too tired to post about it except shit is good. Focker is best. Zero definitely least favorite and SDF fav.

Didn't like the characters in zero.

SDF 1 is based for a very good reason. I watched it as Robotech as a kid and even as an adult I still love it.

You already saw the best version of Zero (that Frontier episode where they shoot the movie about it).

Macross II is...okay. Not good but not terrible. Not canon, either way.

Oh, dunno if you already knew or if anyone told you, once you finish 7 be sure to watch The Galaxy is Calling Me movie (not really a movie, more like an extra episode), Encore, and Dynamite 7.

Which one of those is about Basara chasing a space whale? Years ago I watched one of those for a couple of minutes, didn't know what the fuck was going on and turned it off. So Zero isn't about Valk's flying around shooting shit?

Yeah that was Dynamite 7.

Zero has that. It also has Focker.

Holy shit lol. I'm on ep 6 and they get that bad? They just seem like Tales villains to me.

Yeah I dislike that the Windermereans are downright scummy. I mean brainwashing people to do your shit? I thought they'd make them slightly likeable so we could question their motives and everything.

I just don't understand their motivation nor their level of escalation. So far as we've learned they are contacted by NUNS at some point. They sign some sort of treaty that seems commercial in nature. At some point later they feel taken advantage of and launch a "war of independence" that ends when they use dimensional weapons, which ends the conflict in an armistice. They then lie to their population and say NUNS used the weapon against them (which makes no sense, because why wouldn't Windermere have been forced to surrender instead of a peace) and began a 7 year build up to launch a war of aggression and conquest using mind control and biological warfare.

Like I don't doubt that NUNS could have done something scummy themselves at some point since they are human and humanity is capable of fucked up shit but as a whole they aren't really that bad.

So far the best explanation I've been able to come up with is that the Windermere believe themselves to be the heirs of the Protoculture and are pissed that humanity seems to have taken that role from them through deed rather than word.

Zero details one of the last major engagements/incidents of the Anti Unification War. It has more focus on combat if anything. Some amaaaaazing combat scenes. This is also when Valkyries were still in their infancy so they have alot more limitations like fuel since I don't think they'd fully switched over to being nuclear-powered yet?

There's a pretty heavy inference that they were colonised or at least neo-colonized. Their resources were being taken from them rather forcibly at a fraction of their worth, hence why they needed to wage a war to become a free state rather than diplomatically or otherwise kicking off the colonialists. The fact it was a war of independence is quite telling

Maybe.

But that doesn't seem like NUNS style. In episode 7 when the Windmerean was talking to the Cat Elder, the Elder specifically said that the humans had been helpful / welcome, that they'd given them technology and jobs. There didn't seem to be any inference that they'd been being exploited.

Wasn't mirage there, she mentioned the whole thing was a very messy affair, with some of the issues being due to different factions. I doubt the NUN, were pretty fair from blameless in this and it doesn't make for a very interesting conflict if they are.

My guess is that an archeological team accidentally triggered a Protoculture dimensional weapon, both sides blamed each other, and shit went south... but that's just a guess.

As I said it's entirely possible NUNS was up to no good but, in general, humanities' track record with alien species is remarkably progressive in the Macross universe. Even after the genocidal war with the Zentraedi they choose integration over revenge. That set the standard going forward. Whenever they encountered other Zentraedi groups they tried to incorporate them. In Macross 7 Dynamite we saw an example of a world peacefully coexisting with NUNS. Outside of the badguy President of Frontier deciding to force Frontier to land on the Vajra home world, they ended up being welcomed by the Vajra in the end. I struggle to find any other example of subjugation/colonialism over natives.

What we do know is that the Windmerean's are using biological weapons and mind control and that they used a dimensional weapon but told their population that NUNS did it. They aren't painted in a positive light.

Edit: And despite their successful "independence" they've spent the last seven years building up for a war of conquest. They want to drive humanity entirely out of the star cluster but are even subjugating other species.

I had no idea they were nuclear powered. I just remember Robotech saying the damn things were powered by Protoculture. So the Valks in Zero can't switch modes?

So the Windmereans are elf space Nazi's?

They certainly can. Though what powers Macross mecha is left vague, they don't go off like nuclear bombs the way mobile suits in Gundam sometimes do.
They've clearly streamlined that sequence over the years, wow. I also don't remember the wings sticking out that much in battroid mode. I know in Macross they can fold out to fire missiles in that mode, but it rarely happens.

That's a VF-0 so it's a little different.

I believe it's actually fusion, not nuclear, now that I think about it. They often just refer to it as "reaction".

The VF-1's proportions do tend to shift around a bit as needed, compare the chest section angles in gerwalk mode:

to those in battroid mode:
Whereas the VF-0, done in CG, keeps its proportions consistent as it transforms:

Well I see that more as the inconsistency of hand drawn versus the pin point modeling of CG, but I see what you mean.

I had no idea reaction weapons were pretty much just fusion bombs then. I guess you really have to hate somebody to use them.

M7 Ep 17:

So like what the fuck is Sivil? Why is she so OP and why the fuck did she almost cream her pants when Basara sang at her?

Ep 18:

It must feel very awkward for Max to have his wife verbally rip his balls off in front of his whole crew constantly and then have to issue them orders.

M7 Ep 17:

So like what the fuck is Sivil? Why is she so OP and why the fuck did she almost cream her pants when Basara sang at her?

She's a protodevlin that isn't bound to a human body like Gepelnitch or Gigil. And she really, really loves rock.

Why it effects her like that becomes a significant plot point.

That shit was hilarious. I swear these two and Gamlin are the best parts of M7. Mylene isn't too bad either.

Ep 19:

Gamlin went all John McClane, loved it. Basara is probably getting sick and tired of Sivil leaving him mid song.

Ep 20:

So is Sivil like really fucking horny or something cause she kept trying to rape Nekki Basara while in Rex's body.

Ep 23:

That
Sivil and Basara kiss had so much sexual tension that it blew their god damn clothes off!!!
lol!!!

Ep 24:

Basara is lucky this isn't Zeta Gundam, he'd be getting smacked upside his head every fucking episode. Gamlin is such a nice guy, I love seeing him outside of uniform. The way he talks and how he drops that serious demeanor is a nice thing to see.

Ep: 26:

Exedor's "fuck off with this shit" fear of the Protodevlin cracks me up. At the very least I don't hate the show anymore. Also that they toned down on the usage of Planet Dance. Weird how Gepelnitch and Sivil have two very different reactions to Basara's Anima Spiritia.

Best bet is to PM DavidWangChoi. He's got loads of that stuff and knows where to get it.

We have a resident Macross GAF store?

I'm thinking of picking up some Hi-Metal R's in the next few weeks. Was thinking of doing some model kits... but might take up too much of my time. Time to hit figureGAF.

The prices on Amazon seemed pretty decent for things like HI-METAL R figures, all things considered.

I am probably gonna end up buying that Mass Production VF-1A model that was posted here earlier. Mostly because it is a fairly affordable price. It's not coming out here until September though.

Macross 7 EP 28:

Sivil is best waifu and Gamlin and Basara is best bromance.

Ep 29:

You know what Max bruv, you're crew is dumb as fuck if they didn't know Mylene was your daughter. Why does Gabil talk about beauty like how Deidara from Naruto talks about art?

Your experience with Macross 7 has more or less mirrored how mine went. Gamlin is the best.
Gamlin kick!

On the issue of Max and Mylene: I think this is mostly played for laughs. Max isn't the type to talk about his family to his crew. You'd expect that if any of them followed the news the fact that Mylene was the daughter of the city mayor and fleet commander wouldn't be a shock. But you're also talking about two bridge bunnies who are/were dating the same guy. So I think they're just more inclined to think something like "Our Captain is a closet pervert who dates young girls who call him papa". (Wasn't she also dolled up too? Like he was a sugar daddy?)

Also that's just Gabil's schtich. He's stupid otherwise so you just have to go with it.

It's clear that Max is not a Maes Hugh level dad that would beat the living shit out of you with the pictures of his daughter. Still waiting for Max and Millia to patch their shit up damn. They briefly did during the concert until the attack and then they were fighting over a control board. Gamlin's great, you can tell that at heart he's a big kid. I loved that high five between Basara and Gamlin. It's also quite clear Basara misses Sivil. I also had no idea those two bridge bunnies were dating Kinryu. I mean I got that feeling but I just thought I was just being a baka hentai.

I think the fact that Mylene is his youngest of seven also plays into it. He's an old hand at the Dad game.

I think it's more or less explicitly pointed out during one of Gamlin/Mylene's dates (the tea house or something?) Kinryu basically had one on each arm. There may have been one other off hand comment.

Everything about Sivil/Basara is very subtle on Basara's end. The change from her just being the other that he wants to touch with his music towards something more personal is very understated

Sivil orgasms every time he sings. How is that understated? I'll agree it's understated on his part, but I can tell he's into her. He's not even being forced to sing to her, but he's adamant about waking her up and Gigil isn't even forcing him to. I do wish more of Max's kids would pop up, but whatever I have no control over that one. Mylene is good though, just wish her concert uniform wasn't so revealing. If this ever got brought over they would definitely change her age in the dub. He's like a closet dad. Yeah I have kids but you aren't meeting them.

I hope Hayate's unwillingness to actually kill fucks him up soon. Some of the Windermereans seem alright but most are damn scummy.

Sorry, yeah, I meant from him.

Sounds like more of them do make an appearance then? Why is Mylene the only one with pink hair? Even if it's a Meltran thing I can't really remember any of the Zentradi from SDF 1 having pink hair. Klan from Frontier had purple hair, but I think that's common in SDF 1 at the very least. It just seems weird genetically since all her siblings bar one has green hair. I'm hoping Sivil wakes up soon. I actually like her attachment to Basara and she seems protective of the dude. I think she even almost killed Gigil during battle over him. I just hope they actually interact proper after she wakes up and stops trying to rape the dude.
There is no pop idol in Zero, but there is a very attractive native islander who can sing.
Is the music good? I like Plus and Frontier so much cause of the soundtracks alone, even the Delta music is getting decent. Pretty much I guess it's not Macross without some good music, I'm even liking more of the stuff from M7 now.

It's in an OVA. But yes, you do meet one of Mylene's sisters. -- If I recall one of Klan's fellow Meltraedi pilots had pink hair. -- Mylene has pink hair because anime.

Is it Dynamite 7? Am I really going to be forced to watch Dynamite 7? Please tell me there's more to Dynamite 7 than Basara chases after space whales and it's not just Basara as the main focus. I don't remember Klan's friend, just Klan, her giant tits, her
love for Michael senpai
and her being hilarious in chibi form. But the "cause anime" trope really does fuck with a dude that tends to occasionally over think the anime he's watching.

No, the Encore episodes. They're scattered throughout the series timeline wise but were made after the series ended. They're all pretty amazing. I have a particular fondness for the "Fleet of the Strongest Women" episode but there is also one for Miriya and one for Mylene's sister, for example.

Why does that sound impossible to track down? I actually like the show itself cause of the character interactions, I'm just no looking forward to anything solely Basara focussed since the best part is the cast and their growth. Basara is good, but sort of stagnant since he's still a bit of an unwavering demented space hippy. He's got good intentions, which I can see now, but he's still a space hippy.

I really like Zero's OST, but there's no pop-esque music like the other Macross entries. It's more mystic-adventurous, and the vocal songs are along the same vein without clear lines. It's definitely a departure from the urban feel Macross fans were used to.
