A game having it's own identity doesn't mean it's stuck in the PS2 era.

MH has been stuck in the PS2 era and I say this as a lifelong superfan of the series. It's my favourite franchise ever, but there's no denying that it's stuck in the PS2 era.

There will be more MH games on Switch, there's no doubt about that.

Capcom wants to have a portable series and a console series. If either is likely to die, it's the console one.

I expected the character running from the T-Rex to lead it into an ambush of other players waiting to destroy it. But that never happened.

Still looked cool though. I hope they got rid of the zones and it's all one big world, for the most part.

What exactly makes it stuck in the PS2 era? The stuff I usually hear from people is crap like the segmented arenas which is laughable.

Anyone who thinks this could run on Switch without significant reductions in effects or resolution is kidding themselves. Anyone who thinks the Switch DQ11 looks better needs glasses.

They haven't even shown DQ11 on the Switch yet. That said, looking at XCX, I am not seeing anything in Monster Hunter World that is suppose to blow me away graphically to make me believe that like most games, with the right optimizations and cuts you could faithfully bring it over to a weaker platform.

The game is no Horizon here.

I'm really gonna hate if they go back to splitting the series again. We just got out of that shit.

What DQ11 switch? It wasn't shown yet. I think you that need glasses.
Oops, I was thinking of that other JRPG that was PS4/Switch and looked like ass on the Switch.

My mistake.

EDIT: I had a different game in my mind that I thought was DQ11. I can't remember which early announcement it was at the moment, but I'm thinking of a PS4/Switch multiplat that has a particularly heinous picture of an arch.

Texture wise sure, but the AI in monhun has always been leagues better than most games that came out in the 7th gen.

The trailer and gameplay is plain bad.
I hope we will get more gameplay in the future. Hopefully something that shows that there aren't just dinosaur and lizard styled monsters in the game.

I will wait for the PC version before I make a final statement though.
I already raged on Twitter about MHW, but after sleeping on it for two hours I changed my mind a bit.
I'm not incredibly hyped for it as I would be with regular MH games, but I will follow its future development.

Please don't fuck this up, Capcom. And also give it a bit more color, this isn't 2008 anymore.
The last segment of the 4 min video has vibrant colors at the end, it seems the one in the beginning is just specific to the place or weather

A lot designs are stuck in the old gen. Sure there's been new mechanics but the biggest changes since the PS2 era has been mounting and water combat which is gone now.

The Dromes

They don't even have an actual turning animation, they just hop to pivot around in the most hilarious way.

"...ok, but you're comparing it to PS4 DQXI so using it to suggest Switch can handle MHW is silly"

yup checks out
Sigh,

If a Dragon Quest sprawling rpg game that looks the same level of quality as an open world monster hunter is releasing on the PS4 and the Switch, then obviously it means the Switch is able to handle MHW and its not as weak as you think it is. So perhaps, being the logically minded person you are, you can re-evaluate your assumptions regarding what's possible on the Nintendo Switch? That is how the world is.

Or do we have to wait for Square Enix to dump the rest of their game catalog on the platform before you all get it through that thick skull? Do I need to toss in a jaggi carcass while we're at it to sweeten the deal?

I've watched the gameplay video about 4 times and I'm fairly sure that this is actually MH5. Well, I still want to see a hunt from start to finish to be 100% sure. Imo they just named it differently so in case the new formula flops they can go back to the "old" one.

That's what I'm saying LMAO. Switch is great (I own) but please do not compare it to PS4/X1 graphics. It cannot compete.

Anyone saying this game doesn't look good is definitely blind...crazy af

This looks very bland and generic. Armor design is boringly restrained as well. Part of the appeal of MonHun is the outlandish armor designs:(

Come on now, they only showed one armor set, which I assume is basically like the steel set or a very early starter set. Monster Hunter always has a lot of armor sets. If they only showed one, how can you make such a grand statement when you haven't even seen the rest of the armor designs?

Lot of people angry for some reason.

Anyway. PC wewt. I'll give the series an honest try. Never liked handhelds much.

Which assumption, where did i make such a thing?

Im just amused that you use DQ XI for anything at all if we dont see it at all on switch to indicate what switch is capaple AT ALL.

Like for example how do you know it doenst run ass like fallout 4 on xbox where it drops basicly to 0 frames?

The art, particularly the monster design is bad IMO. Like, it's absolutely a technical upgrade for sure, but despite better fidelity the game doesn't look as good because the art is so much blander.

They actually changed a lot about the dromes in the shift to fourth gen. They got more of an update than a lot of other returning monsters.
Really? Kinda hard to believe when they have literally three or four moves.

Rathalos on the other hand has basically been an entirely new monster since Tri.

I've always been kind of interested in this series but never bothered to try it on the 3DS. I was going to jump in with XX on Switch (if it comes to NA) but perhaps this one would be a better point of entry.

Out of curiosity, why do so many people say portability is so important to this particular series? What will I miss out on by playing it on just my PS4?

I think you're more blinded by the fact that the game is on the PS4 and the fact that it's definitely not as good looking as other PS4 games.

???? You mean DQ Heroes?
Thats not a jrpg.

The fact that you have to load to step into a small little area. The fact that monster corpses disappear when another monster appears on the map because the game can't handle that many assets at once. The fact that you can only type like 4 small words on the 3DS per line (lol at that). The fact that you can't even type AT ALL during quests on 3DS. The fact that the bow/gun controls haven't changed since 2004.

I could go on but I'm so tired right now. I really need to sleep.

You were right for the director on this one, I remember people laughing and doubting you for saying that.

Good job 👍🏻

But DQXI is coming out on the switch and its based off the PS4 version no? So obviously that means that the switch is more capable than people have convinced themselves of otherwise, don't you think? I just think that's weird and people should stop playing such strange games.

This is some incredible logic.

You enjoy your Switch, we get it, but stop talking bullshit about products you haven't seen.

I'm loving all of the damage control from those who don't want to accept that this is the next major game in the franchise. Although it was clear this would happen once the reality of the franchise spreading it's wings across platforms came to light.

The game is going to make some awesome changes that long term fans of the series will really appreciate. Don't jump to conclusions just yet.

Yes really. They used to have two moves, no breaks, no limping animation, and their movement was even more stilted.
I guess they at least tried.

I feel the 2nd gen monsters were an enormous improvement over the 1st gen. Monsters like Rajang, Congalala, Tigrex, and Daimyo Hermitaur transitioned much better than stuff like the Dromes, Yian-Garuga, or Cephadrome.

1. We haven't seen a single frame of DQXI running on the Switch.

2. We don't know what or if any compromises were made to transition DQXI from the PS4 to the Switch. We just know it's basically a port, but if I recall correctly they were adamant it wasn't a port, so I assume a lot of tinkering is going into it.

3. You're extrapolating with literally no evidence. Just because two games exist on two different systems doesn't ensure graphical parity between the two platforms.
