SIE increasing the Price of the PS5 console in Japan from September 2nd 2024

In the uk the digital is around £350 or tad more and the disc version is around £400 or over and refurbished is under £400 so despite the japanese price increase this puts it around the same level of we pay for

RRP is £480 for the disc and £390 for the digital.

The price in all regions is in line with the USD price with this increase in Japan

I get why, but

13k yen price increase for both models.

All accessories and peripherals also getting a price hike, not just the consoles.

kazuyamishima kazuyamishima , I would say add this to the OP.

So basically due to the devaluation of the Yen the PS5 and accessories in Japan were way cheaper than in the US, and they are adjusting the prices to match US pricing.

Damn I got lucky, I just bought mine here last month.

Sucks to see this. I'm not surprised they raised the price given the weak yen but that's a biiiig jump.

Switch 1 might be bringing in decent profits so they can take a hit on the margins.

But that's just me guessing.

Maybe switch 2 gets impacted.

When inflation hit in the US other costs in gaming went up but Nintendo held the line at $60 / $300 because Switch is way more profitable with bigger margins. Nintendo basically kept making bank while absorbing a price decrease.

Switch was profitable from day-one, yeah.

They see a much bigger return on development costs than should usually be possible. It was a long time ago but I think I remember their operating profit being close to 20% which was insane. When inflation hit, it was still probably better than Sony on a good day. Complete insanity.

Not a good situation, yen has progressively weakened too much but wages are the same.
This will have an obvious negative impact on sales and it will make the console a premium product.
But it's a general problem, Nintendo will also have to take tough decisions with Switch 2 price/profitability at this point also factoring what could happen if things get worse.

Are you guys really sure that Sony will launch a PS5 Pro? I don't know how they expect it to work. If the regular PS5 cost that much in Japan, how much will the Pro cost?

Regardless of what's happening to the yen, these are ridiculous price hikes.

You don't take a dump on your home market like this.

Considering how bad the economy here in Japan is now, the terrible wages and the yen, this move will just destroy the PS5 here. It maybe equal to the dollar but in regards to the spending power those of us have in Japan, that's an insane increase. ¥80000 is just unbelievably insane.
Japan is not going to get much better. It is close to end stage fiat with a 260% debt to GDP ratio. Once you breach 100%, it's essentially a banana republic. There's nothing left to do, they have to keep making more currency to prevent a collapse of the currency as it is debt based like all fiat currently is and that will only devalue it more.

Equivalent to $700, at least.
At this point Sony don't even know what they are doing. With Pro costing that much and without a price reduction on base PS5, I don't expect any raise in PS5 sales. Besides that, gaming PC market is getting more and more attractive, and Sony apparently don't realise that it is their real competitor these days.

That's ridiculous. That could very well kill momentum in Japan. How much will be PS5 Pro be then? $800-1000??? Has this been the only console generation where these companies actually increased the price of their consoles instead of dropping the prices? I've even heard that the PS6 will be very expensive and people should prepare to save up for it. What is Sony doing?

I don't live in Japan so correct me if I'm wrong but I think this is the current options according to Google at least.

Series X 66,978 JPY
Series S 1TB is 49,978 JPY
Steam Deck is 59,800 JPY
Switch is 29,980 JPY

I'd definitely choose any of the above over that, but consumers love PS.

The price is only increasing numerically, the value is staying the same. Problem is, is people's wages don't also adjust to currency debasement.

This is the future for the US and all debt based fiat currencies. Japan is just farther along with their 260% debt to GDP.

I literally don't understand what you're trying to say. I don't even think you do honestly. I said I would choose any of the above options. I'm not pretending about anything. So you have no point I guess, figures.

My point is you're not offering any new information or commentary in that post of yours.

All you've done in recent weeks is complain about brand loyalty and what other consumers are doing, this is just an extension of that.

The price hike affects Japanese consumers, which you aren't, they aren't going to rush out and buy Xbox consoles, price hike or no price hike.

Probably thinking how he can out dumb sony.

They both have a synergy going. Dumb and dumber.
Microsoft also announced a price increase for its Xbox consoles in Japan earlier this month, raising the price of its Xbox Series X 12 per cent to almost 67,000 yen.
Sony was like "The fuck you doing, MS?".

Maybe Japan should focus on improving their economy instead, how a country is okay with 25 years of stagnant GDP is beyond me.

There are a few trade agreements from the 90s which fucked up their economy badly and they never recovered. Its not like they didn't try to improve things again is why they have so much debt.

It's not like they haven't tried, but the debt and inflation crisis set them back so far that it's been near impossible for them to recover from.

But this is what happens when you have an increase in money supply without it being paired with an increase in economic output for long periods of time, a situation which is currently taking hold in many advanced economies around the world at the moment.
