California man has been arrested for abducting a 10-year-old child he reportedly met on social media apps Roblox and Discord, authorities said Wednesday.

Matthew Macatuno Naval, 27, was arrested Sunday for kidnapping and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, the Kern County Sheriff's Office said in a news release. CNN is working to determine whether Naval has legal representation.

My kids have some basic rules they have to use when online. No names, especially last names, no discussion of where they live, cant show their faces. I listen in as much as possible to try to tell if there are adults in there but with voice changers its really hard.

I don't have kids, but I've been warning my sister about Roblox predators for years. Thankfully, my nieces are both smart and obedient, so they don't really use chat on Roblox. But shit's still super scary.

I would lock him in a room prison alone and force him to play ROBLOX alone on an empty server until the end of his life.

Regulators need to clamp down on this shit.

No excuse for it in the age of modern AI tech.

Modern AI solution should make it entirely feasible to detect predatory behaviours (e.g. ANY attempts to ask people about their real names, addresses locations, as well as sexual or suggestive comments etc) then auto ban and report to the authorities.

Or if you want to be even smarter about it; there should be a programme whereby they get reported to the police, who would (instead of banning or tipping them off) then basically attempt to honeypot them by using an AI agent pretending to be a minor with the aim to get them to arrange a meet, where the police would be waiting to catch them dead to rights.

Not excusing any of this but 10-year-olds doing anything online unsupervised is just wild to me.

Back in 2016, I was dating a single mom which she'd leave her 11 (IIRC) year old daughter completely unsupervised while on the internet.
Girl was 5-6 hours a day on tik tok, watching YT influencers and some other app which fuck if I remember right now, anyway, I remember her one day saying "mom, someone asked my name and for some pictures" - hearing that , I did what no man should ever do in these case - not minding my own business - I basically yelled at her (not the kid), "you have got to be fucking kidding me, don't you know that shit is full of pedos? MAYBE go take a look at their DM's/chat history ?" to which she gave me to coldest stare I've been ever given.

Fair enough, she told me the next day that the dude was...a middle aged fuckah, shat her pants, deleted her kid's profile and that was it.

One of the reasons i broke up with her was A) her fucking kid (needy, spoiled brat) and B) her (the mother) acting nonchalantly most of the time when it came to everything daughter related.

Moral of the story :
- Don't hook up with single mothers.

- Don't hook up with single mothers especially when they have bratty kids.

- Most "modern" parents are FUBAR

I watched a few "catch a predator" videos on Youtube and one of the creeps was indeed stalking girls using Robolox. This is a real thing.

I don't think she plays on it anymore but when my granddaughter played on Roblox her mom was always grouped with her. They played some pet game. Adopt Me? Anyway, my granddaughter has had little freedom online. She once had a youtube account briefly until she had one video blow up. As soon as she got any attention her parents shut it down. Poor kid will never be an influencer.

This guy? Fuck him. I hope he gets what is coming to him. I don't mean a slap on the wrist either. People like him do not deserve to be part of society.

Can someone please tell what the hell Roblox actually is? Is it like Minecraft? And why is there always some weird degenerate, life threatening, crime related, murder, drugs etc. related things attached to the game?

It's what Dreams could have been if Media Molecule weren't hippie useless fucks.

A sandbox of random stuff created and played by users, with much more variety than Minecraft, like a virtual playground ala Ready Player One without the VR.

Insanity. Lock him up for life.

Also, wasn't Roblox under investigation or something in relation to paedophilia?

Yes, it was:

Also... sorry, but why are you allowing your 10 year old unsupervised access to Roblox and Discord? Hell, they should not even have a Discord account.

10 year old kids have a discord account...?

About that guy, these people shouldn't be allowed to live. I was gonna say arrest him, but why should tax payers have to feed child rapists?

I dealt with this type of case at work (CID).
And to be frank these kid "games" are just abused these type of perps . Roblox is clearly made for kids, so perps know that there is going to be an abundance of kids there. Discord is the same concept.
One of my training I had to pass as a kid. I told the chat on discord for Pokemon violet i was 12, a few was like man how u like the game blah.. and i also got a ton of DM with hey where are you at.. dickpics.. all kind of other filthy shit.
Company ROblox know its a problem and even made a dedicated portal to serve subpoenas , and they answer them in a timely manner as well.

all chats are disabled on all games my kids play online.
my son is 10.. and we play MHW together now. Its great. untill some one post a kawaii sticker saying tiddy milk

My kids play Roblox and guess what.. I set up parental blocks to only be able to chat with people I okay. Plus I look at their logs every week .

It's super easy to be a parent not just let social media and tablets raise your child or in this case worse.

For those calling for the death penalty, I completely disagree.

What needs to happen to this "man" is that he's put in the general population of a prison and what he's done is "accidentally" leaked out to the rest of the inmates.

Justice would then be swift.

Parents in this day and age need tech education.

They're oblivious to the potential dangers of online social media and games.

Be aware of what your kids do online.

This is essentially what it comes down to. Parents should be aware if not made aware of the risks involved in online games. They need to be the ones that mitigate the risks.

I remember back when Minecraft came out, we found out my little brother who was a minor at the time, planned to meet up with some 40 something year old who he referred to as he's friend. My parents instantly banned him from playing the game again.

It's a scary and dangerous world, and kids just simply know no better.

Functions a lot like Gmod or Fortnite where there is a massive offering of "games/modes" made by community devs with the provided engine tools. Roblox does have some confirmations/requirements you need to clear before voice chat becomes available as well as voice chat not being a functioning component when playing/logging into the console apps (dunno how much that last part has changed tho).

Since every game and mode is usually its own "server", players can get banned from them but the problem is that there are super young voice chat users that can get preyed upon in the larger/popular games by just using VC around strangers and not friends.

For instance, there is an omegel-like game called neighbors and instead of a webcam you are in-game, inside a house where you just get paired with other randoms and just yap to each other. There are icebreaker questions and all that to help promote conversation. A super simple socializing game mode but also easilly an online-safety mess.

I don't think they're that tech oblivious, I think it's just easier for them to blame companies than to admit they did not supervise their children's online activities and be labelled as bad parents.

We live in a day and age where parents just give their kid a phone or tablet and let them go about their day because it's easier to let them use a device and be quiet than to parent them and raise them.

Parents these days want to be friends to their kids, rather than being parents.
