42% of PS5 purchases from Sony's latest record breaking quarter has come from new users. Where do we think these users are coming from?

Where are all these new first-time PlayStation console owners coming from?

They just posted data showing they are basically flat in units from PS4. The only growth comes in selling more games at higher prices and services to the same size user base. And of course whatever they are doing on PC.

The fact that they are not bigger than PS5 in terms of units when Xbox is smaller is concerning.
Rising MAU tells us different story.
Same installbase with rising MAU show that migration is slower this gen, and that's understandable given way too prolongen window of crossgen games. So playstation is grabbing new gamers outside it's ecosystem to close gap

Where is the option for 'people finally moving on from PS4'?

(the answer of course is..... many factors not just one)
Check the *2. The very fact this is so specific tells you there is something behind it, and Sony probably knows what. Regional pricing discrepancy and taking advantage of it would be my guess.
With Xbox sales coming to a halt and an uptick in new PSN-users, there will be a very strong correlation between the two.

I don't think China and other big emerging markets give a shit about consoles to the point of buying in droves
They do though, consoles still by far the cheapest and convinient way to play games. And as more games appear on playstation specifically targeting these regions, the more people will opt for value for money.

Before games "from Chinese to Chinese" were PC-only and console proposition were "Western/Japan games" those have different culture, views, art style etc. A niche staff for foreign lovers (like anime in the west and western stuff in Japan). Now China got a lot of their own games on consoles, both mp and SP, so now it's a proper value proposition for locals.

PS5 were selling out in China on Wukong launch.

Didn't knew about that, always thought China was PCland and India mobileland so consoles, sure have an audience, but not a big one like in US/EU/JP

I remember when Phil said that people won’t switch consoles because of their digital library. That clearly not the case judging from current Xbox and PS5 sales.

A lot of Xbox users don't have substantial digital libraries due to gamepass. That makes it very easy for people to move on.

They've played themselves in more way than one.

I would think the bulk of these has come from China and Korea.
We've seen a big push from Sony investing into developers from these places in the last few years.
Looks like it's starting to pay off.
As countries such as India become more affluent I expect to see similar growth in the next few years.
I think only a small percentage would of come from Xbox only gamers.

I know a few friends who were long time PC gamers who have had enough of the issues with that platform and it made sense for them to move to PS5. Helps that GTA6 wont be in PC for years.

I think it mostly has to be kids. It’s normal for people to dip out of gaming as they get older and for kids to come in to replace them.

I voted for "emerging markets"

There are not enough ex-Xbox users to explain 42%.
Not sure, how many kids still get consoles, but for Christmas this might be. On the other hand we have the PS5 Pro, so probably many base PS5 are being handled down to other users, maybe kids. Yes, together with Christmas the Kids option is definitely possible

But for china the highly successful Black Wukong game might be a reason. It is a country with many citizens, where Playstation was not very strong before.

The conspiracy theory that I go back and forth on has always been that they only started this gen as a trojan horse to be able to get regulator approvals more easily on publisher acquisitions.

Pcmr refugees after gpu price increase
Ngl this is probably a big contributor.

Used to be you could build a $600-800 mid-tier PC that would thrash the $400 console.

Now you gotta spend that on the GPU alone and half the PC ports run like dogshit

There's simply no way you can reconcile the absolutely historically terrible quarter that Microsoft had and the peak PS5 quarter and not put two and two together that it's Xbox fans from Xbox One deciding to buy a PS5 instead of an XBS.

Of course some of it is new generation of kids and people buying games like Astro Bot or the success of Black Myth Wukong in China, but those wouldn't have been as predominant in Q3 as what we just witnessed.

Despite no Spider-Man 2 level game, PS5 is up over last year's Q3... stop and think about that.

I know one is from Xbox one to ps4 but stopped gaming for a while and recently just got a ps5 but forgot psn account so had to make a new one.

You say people can't be banned anymore and create a new account??
I’m saying it wouldn’t explain the 42% uptick unless there was an event where Sony mass-banned users and they all came back within the same time frame.

That’s the real take away, sales momentum is speeding up.

Go check out Amazon Japan best selling video games...

Both PS5 Monster Hunter bundles are #2 and #3 respectively behind only Monster Hunter Wild...

3rd party horii controller #4

Elden Ring Nightrein #6

Non bundled PS5 disc drive #10

PS5 Pro #14

don't want to look too much into Amazon charting because it can be misleading, but I think we have to keep an eye on Monster Hunter's performance in Japan this month and what impact it'll have on PS5.

I've mentioned it's the largest PS5 release in region to date. Then you have Ghost of Yotei, GTA6, and Onimusha 2 all dropping within the next 22 months...

I thought they’d go to PC, that’s what everyone says, like how cheap and accessible PC is now lol
?

Steam hit 38.3 million peak concurrent players in 2024, compared to 24.8M in 2020 and 8.4M in 2015.

Meanwhile PS5… almost caught up to PS4 launch aligned.

So yeah don’t worry, looks like PC is getting plenty of growth, whereas PS5 is nearly bringing in enough users to remain stable.

Some takes here are so hot that they deserved to be printed and burned.

At the end of the generation and we get the best selling games list

GTA 6 will be #1 in western countries

Monster Hunter Rise will be #1 in Japan

PS5 is getting 2 games this year that will shift a huge amount of units

Hardware sales will top 2024

Some console warriors don't understand the concept of having more than 1 gaming machine too.

Why would Xbox owners 'abandon ship' when (other than Astrobot) PS5 hasn't had any exclusive games? In fact, Indy came out and a slew of other new games are coming out between February and May (so far) and most of those are at least 6 months exclusivity. Only Doom seems to be day one on PS5.

Most of these new users are likely newer markets.

If they are Xbox users. most adults have the money to buy more than one console you know!!

Comparing consoles sales to concurrent player numbers. :pie_thinking:

Probably the late to the party movers from PS4 to PS5.
I'm one of them. This might shock you, but PS5 price isn't exactly fair in other countries. My country the price is absurd, so the only thing people can do is either buy in another country or wait for a cheaper price, like I did.

Anyway to answer the question, just anecdotally I know a few dads who didn’t own a PS4, but got a PS5 to play with their kids. I’m guessing there is a decent amount of growth there.

Comparing consoles sales to concurrent player numbers.

Stupid stay stupid.
I’m not directly comparing the sales of one platform vs concurrent users on the other, I’m using that as a way to gauge the relative growth of PC gaming vs PlayStation gaming over time. If you know of a better way than looking at Steam player counts, please share it.
