Microsoft likely looked at that figure, estimated the new few years of sales and decided to just rip off the bandaid and go fully third party. So, PS5 sold 70+M
That puts Series at ~24+M consoles
It has literally 0 exclusives, every game is day1 on pc, so this means dead in europe(7:1 or even 10:1 in favour of sony), and not much alive even in the US.I’m certainly no Xbox advocate, but I am genuinely surprised by how much it has fallen behind PS this gen. I honestly thought it would be much closer, especially considering how cheap the Series S is. I have to wonder if those price tier customers have just bought a Switch instead.
Still with 100m consoles like amd claims, its about 3:1 worldwide for sony, its a masacre, bro.Wasn't xbox at 21m in June 2023? Last year was pretty bad. Less than 3m in the US and Europe was barely anything but let's just say 4m worldwide in 2024. That would give us 25m. Let's be generous and add 2m for the second half
So PS5 is almost 3:1 to Series consoles? Ouch.

With PS5 selling ~71M:
Exactly. I buy all new consoles and have had a gaming pc for last 30 years. I bought every Xbox console because I had to to play halo/ gears/Forza.It has literally 0 exclusives, every game is day1 on pc, so this means dead in europe(7:1 or even 10:1 in favour of sony), and not much alive even in the US.

PS5 Tops 70M Lifetime - Worldwide Hardware Estimates for December 2024
The PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console worldwide with 3.42 million units sold for December 2024, according to VGChartz estimates. The PlayStation 5 has now sold an estimated 71.03 million units lifetime worldwide. The Nintendo Switch sold an estimated 2.69 million units to bring its...n4g.com
This would put Series at ~29M.
And if the Take 2 data is from november, when PS5 sold about ~65M, which would've put Series at ~29M as well, it's clear that Xbox sales have pretty much flatlined.
It's dead.
according to VGChartz estimates
Insane but I agree. At this point Xbox can't reach 30 million sales

It won't matter.

As I remember doesn't VGChartz under estimates PlayStation numbers and over estimates Xbox number?

With around 2.7m sold in the US for 2024, there’s no way in hell than Xbox series consoles sold 6m. WW in 2024.YTD Nov 24

They sold only 2.7M in the US over a whole year?I think take two numbers are undertracked, they are just estimates anyway.
Sony results are coming next Thursday, they’ll possibly be close to 75m PS5’s shipped
With around 2.7m sold in the US for 2024, there’s no way in hell than Xbox series consoles sold 6m. WW in 2024.
Yes they sold less then 3M last year in US and less then 5M WW.They sold only 2.7M in the US over a whole year?
Glancing over it, I assumed that number was just for december.![]()
From a purely "business intelligence" (man, I hate that term) standpoint, the game division has solid financial perspectives, from going down the 3rd party path. It's mind-blowing that after this disaster with an investment of more than 80 billion, the Xbox leadership is still holding their positions.
If you count the amount of non Xbox Xboxes sold, it's well over 100 million! At this point Xbox can't reach 30 million sales
Yes, from January to December 2024, they sold an estimate of just 2.7m units in the US.They sold only 2.7M in the US over a whole year?

These numbers don't seem good for Sony either. ~70 million ps5s for this far into the console life cycle?
Yes, from January to December 2024, they sold an estimate of just 2.7m units in the US.
The US represents more than 50% of all Xbox series consoles sold WW.
Also, if all games stated for this year release on time, it could be really big year for the PS5 with:
- GTA VI
- Ghost of Yotei
- Mafia the Old Country
- Monster Hunter Wilds
- Death Stranding 2
And many many more current gen only games .
The truly impressive part isn't that they're (mostly) keeping pace with PS4 despite being more expensive (both Standard and Pro). They're largely keeping pace with PS4 despite being much more expensive and the Pro being almost double the price, especially with a disc drive.

The hardware department is utterly and completely cooked, though.
And it remains to be seen whether MS will be able to shepherd their studios better than EA or (LOL) Ubisoft. Historically, they didn't exactly shine at efficient and effective project management.
MLB The Show is going current gen only. Not sure if EA FC, Madden, or NBA 2K have been confirmed for current gen only this year. CF25 was current gen only last year and is the best selling sports title in US history... I could see EA FC holding on for another year given the market in Europe, but with GTA6, they probably don't have to. Then you have to look at CoD.
These games start to release in August with Madden, so we'll have a better idea by June.
It'll be VERY interesting to see Sony's forecast for the fiscal year in May and obviously interesting to see if they drop prices after this year. I'm still expecting post-GTA6 in 2026 that we'll see a 350-dollar PS5 digital and a 400-dollar PS5 disc, as well as a 600-dollar PS5 Pro. It'll be even more interesting to see if the PS5 digital ever hits 300 dollars this generation.
You get both a reply and a heart emoji just for the B5 reference. In Microsoft's case, they were simultaneously stupid and arrogant. Which, as Londo Mollari once mentioned, is the most efficient combo.
I think those numbers are phenomenal for Sony, considering their fist-party is in the worst shape they've ever been. These numbers don't seem good for Sony either. ~70 million ps5s for this far into the console life cycle?
Serious question as the article says shipped so does that take into account the units sitting in stores?Take two's data is till Nov 2024. By September end ps5 had sold 65 million units (according to Sony). https://www.gamesindustry.biz/plays...ost-sony-financials-as-ps5-passes-65m-shipped
EA FC won’t ditch PS4 until PS6 comes along, that’s what they’ve done since the 90s.
The differences between the generational versions do become more stark over the years though resulting in the last few last-gen editions just being squad updates.
If the numbers in this thread are to be believed in a 5 year period for PS4 it had sold 88 million, in the same 5 year period the PS5 has sold about 60 million, I wouldn't largely say keeping pace due to being 30 million behind and instead being a lower status quo possibly due to a large portion of the new games for the system having been fairly underwhelming this generation. The truly impressive part isn't that they're (mostly) keeping pace with PS4 despite being more expensive (both Standard and Pro).
The actually impressive part is that they're (mostly) keeping pace with PS4, despite being more expensive and having suffered severe inventory shortages for over a year after launch.
