So, PS5 sold 70+M consoles:

That puts Series at ~24+M consoles.

Edit:

Numbers were off, the 94M seems to be from november 2024, when PS5 was at around ~65M sold.

It insane how utterly fucked up Microsoft made of the Xbox one reveal back in the last generation and what it's done to the brand, I like millions of other gamers who had xbox360's just watched the reveal and went "Huh!? Wtf" and then Sony came out with not only a more powerful AND cheaper console but made it all about the games... And with the PS4 generation being all about digital libraries ain't nobody was switching back no matter how good the next hardware was..

I’m certainly no Xbox advocate, but I am genuinely surprised by how much it has fallen behind PS this gen. I honestly thought it would be much closer, especially considering how cheap the Series S is. I have to wonder if those price tier customers have just bought a Switch instead.

It has literally 0 exclusives, every game is day1 on pc, so this means dead in europe(7:1 or even 10:1 in favour of sony), and not much alive even in the US.

So PS5 is almost 3:1 to Series consoles? Ouch.

Overall, but the ratio ramped up to 4:1 last year, the bulk of Series sales are Series S from the first couple of years

Sales fell off a cliff last year, even the sales in the US were a joke

With PS5 selling ~71M:

This would put Series at ~29M.

And if the Take 2 data is from november, when PS5 sold about ~65M, which would've put Series at ~29M as well, it's clear that Xbox sales have pretty much flatlined.

It's dead.

Exactly. I buy all new consoles and have had a gaming pc for last 30 years. I bought every Xbox console because I had to to play halo/ gears/Forza.

But I never bought a Series x because I can play all the Xbox games on PC 🤷‍♂️

And to make matters worse I got gamepass super cheap for years, and now I sub once maybe twice a year for a month to play the exclusives.

I've gone from paying Xbox hundreds if not thousands of pounds yearly to paying them £20 or less a year to play ALL Xbox games 😂😭😂😭😂😭😂😭😂😭😂😭😂🫢😭

Fucking insane strategy 🤔

Microsoft fucked up their strategy to an amazing level.
The ultimate truth is, exclusives sell consoles. Nintendo has proven it repeatedly over the years.

In Microsoft's case, they were simultaneously stupid and arrogant. Which, as Londo Mollari once mentioned, is the most efficient combo. They were stupid enough to not nurture their existing exclusives, while being arrogant enough to think they could simply buy their way into getting more exclusives (all their studio purchases, culminating with A-B).

This led to them spending way too much money, too quickly, on stuff which couldn't bring a proper return in the initially allocated time. The inevitable terminus point for this misdaventure is them becoming a pure 3rd party publisher. They need to, in order to recoup all the expenditures.
At best, I can see their hardware future as a handheld, but no new big (X)box generation. It just doesn't make financial sense.

Xbox has been on a decline since like ~2013...

It's dead in Europe and Asia, and it's eroding in the UK and US. If it hadn't been for the pandemic, I don't think they'd be sitting anywhere close to 30 million today. They benefitted from people not being able to find PS5s for an extended duration.

With a reduced presence in retail, I expect the GTA bump will be pretty limited and I wonder when we'll start seeing 3rd parties not putting games on XBS. If a game takes 4+ years to develop, we're going to see at what point publishers decided XBS wasn't worth it, which probably would have been after Starfield didn't sell, so by fall 2027 maybe.

I think take two numbers are undertracked, they are just estimates anyway.

Sony results are coming next Thursday, they’ll possibly be close to 75m PS5’s shipped

With around 2.7m sold in the US for 2024, there’s no way in hell than Xbox series consoles sold 6m. WW in 2024.

They sold only 2.7M in the US over a whole year?
Glancing over it, I assumed that number was just for december. 😶

By the end of the generation, it's going to be closer to a 4:1 ratio than a 3:1 ratio... Anyone who things it's a certainty that Xbox continues making hardware is absolutely deluding themselves.

I think Microsoft for the first time in almost 25 years talking about handheld hardware is a suggestions that they're looking for outlets to keep their ecosystem alive, but that they can't keep going toe to toe with Sony anymore.

I've said this for a while, but if there is a next gen xbox home console, it's going to be sold at a heavy premium for people wanting to play in the ecosystem. Imagine if the XSX had launched for 700 dollars and the Series S had launched for 450.

You'd never know it based on twitter and youtube and even most gaming forums. It's very interesting to try to assess why Xbox is overrepresented online. A very vocal minority with dedicated podcasts, YT channels, forums, and even fanboys in media like Ryan McCafferty. I'm not sure how they've been able to sustain an audience though. I guess GamePass.

It's mind-blowing that after this disaster with an investment of more than 80 billion, the Xbox leadership is still holding their positions.
From a purely "business intelligence" (man, I hate that term) standpoint, the game division has solid financial perspectives, from going down the 3rd party path.
The hardware department is utterly and completely cooked, though.
And it remains to be seen whether MS will be able to shepherd their studios better than EA or (LOL) Ubisoft. Historically, they didn't exactly shine at efficient and effective project management.

Yes, from January to December 2024, they sold an estimate of just 2.7m units in the US.

The US represents more than 50% of all Xbox series consoles sold WW.

Also, if all games stated for this year release on time, it could be really big year for the PS5 with:

- GTA VI
- Ghost of Yotei
- Mafia the Old Country
- Monster Hunter Wilds
- Death Stranding 2

And many many more current gen only games .

MLB The Show is going current gen only. Not sure if EA FC, Madden, or NBA 2K have been confirmed for current gen only this year. CF25 was current gen only last year and is the best selling sports title in US history... I could see EA FC holding on for another year given the market in Europe, but with GTA6, they probably don't have to. Then you have to look at CoD.

These games start to release in August with Madden, so we'll have a better idea by June.

It'll be VERY interesting to see Sony's forecast for the fiscal year in May and obviously interesting to see if they drop prices after this year. I'm still expecting post-GTA6 in 2026 that we'll see a 350-dollar PS5 digital and a 400-dollar PS5 disc, as well as a 600-dollar PS5 Pro. It'll be even more interesting to see if the PS5 digital ever hits 300 dollars this generation.

They're largely keeping pace with PS4 despite being much more expensive and the Pro being almost double the price, especially with a disc drive.
The truly impressive part isn't that they're (mostly) keeping pace with PS4 despite being more expensive (both Standard and Pro).

The actually impressive part is that they're (mostly) keeping pace with PS4, despite being more expensive and having suffered severe inventory shortages for over a year after launch.

I'm not sure I agree with your assessment here.

If Microsoft sheds hardware, they largely shed GamePass. That loss of revenue will result in massive studio closures and layoffs.

When Sega went 3rd party their software production actually declined significantly.

If you look at ABK before the merger, they were starting to focus more and more on CoD than their other titles. I envision a post-Xbox Microsoft to focus pretty much on a few key franchises like CoD, Halo, Forza Horizon, and maybe Gears... with a lot of these unprofitable studios being closed down. Microsoft is only keeping them around right now for additional content for GamePass. How much do you think Tango Gameworks cost Microsoft to operate? It couldn't have been that much. They closed it down because they didn't see the value in trying to manage a small Japanese studio, especially post Mikami exit.

Microsoft proper has 4 studios in Washington. They lucked into Halo because Bungie was in Washington... They have 4 studios in California, 3 in the UK, and 2 in Canada. They don't have to actively manage Bethesda, but Arkane and even MachineGames... would not be surprised if either of them are folded by the end of the generation. Maybe MachineGames gets turned into a CoD support studio.

EA FC won’t ditch PS4 until PS6 comes along, that’s what they’ve done since the 90s.

The differences between the generational versions do become more stark over the years though resulting in the last few last-gen editions just being squad updates.

That's not true. FIFA 14 launched on 3 generations of PlayStation but FIFA hit PS3 through FIFA 19. The PS5 didn't launch until 2020. At the end of the day it comes down more to technology than an arbitrary deadline.

You're right that EA FC probably won't ditch PS4 this year, but I wouldn't be surprised if it does so sooner rather than later.

If the numbers in this thread are to be believed in a 5 year period for PS4 it had sold 88 million, in the same 5 year period the PS5 has sold about 60 million, I wouldn't largely say keeping pace due to being 30 million behind and instead being a lower status quo possibly due to a large portion of the new games for the system having been fairly underwhelming this generation.
