this is a waaaay better fit than FOX

Riverdale — a one-hour drama based on the iconic Archie comic book characters has moved to CW. The subversive take on the well-known franchise’s wholesome town of Riverdale and residents Archie, Betty, Veronica, as well as Josie and the Pussycats, originally was being developed at Fox. Greg Berlanti still is exec producing via Berlanti Productions, in association with Warner Bros TV. Archie Comics’ chief creative officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is writing the pilot. Sarah Schechter and Jon Goldwater also are EPs.

Aguirre-Sacassa might be best known for writing Afterlife With Archie, in which the Riverdale gang is visited by the undead, and The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina, which has been described as the more “nuanced” of the two titles and tracks Sabrina’s encounters with witches and covens.

IGN INTERVIEW LAST YEAR said:
"Something we talk a lot about is, 'Imagine if Riverdale were like Twin Peaks,' and was a really weird small town," explained Aguirre-Sacasa. "But Twin Peaks had some very funny black humor stuff to it; obviously it was very serious as well. So that kind of balance is what we're going to try to strike with the show."

the fact they're going to go with a Twin Peaks vibe plus yearly Halloween Afterlife eps, this is gonna be so awesome.

sabrina spinoff pls

I don't see the appeal, either they play up the corniest of them being the archies and maybe fly over the heads of their target demo or they keep it grounded and be beautiful people doing boring shit like Everwood or One Tree Hill

A Twin Peaks Riverdale would be pretty awesome... but the chances of them nailing that is a million-to-one.

They should have Arrow blow through town looking for drug dealers.

I hope they bring in Sabrina at some point and use her as a launching point to insert some cheeky strange occurrences, to establish a status quo of oddity to the town.

This sounds fantastic on paper. I really hope this does maintain the vibe that Aguirre-Sarcasa is talking about and doesn't go full Dawson's Creek or the OC.

Similarly, I'm surprised at how much Archie Comics is killing it nowadays creatively. Afterlife with Archie is fantastic even though it has Hawkeye-level delays (DAMN YOU FRANCAVILLA), and Sabrina is shaping up to be a great
Lovecraftian
story. The Archie reboot was fantastic too, and I hope they can keep that up. Also, the Jughead series with Chip Zdarsky and the artist from Squirrel Girl sounds like an instant buy.

I like the sound of this. Give it a bit of pre-color Pleasantville as well

Where in hell are they going to fit this all in the schedule? And will I be destined to only ever watch The CW?

So you want me to imagine Archie's Weird Mysteries?

I kinda thought of this as well. I expect to see Riverdale as something timeless, that no doubt has modern influence, but isn't soaked in it like many teen programs(and movies) tend to do. I think by doing that, you not only do you make it harder to date the material, you aren't limited by the "now".

That's just a theory, though. I DO like movies and television shows that don't go out of their way to force modern pop culture and trends down your throat with music, lingo and shit.

im not a big fan of CW but holy shit the idea for this show is fantastic. Twin Peaks for teens and the halloween episodes will rule. Hopefully they keep the seasons short though. CW usually loves to drag things on

The new Archie comic was really good tbh

I didn't even know Sabrina was in the same world as Archie. I used to love those shows as a kid. If they could bring them together, it would be a dream come true. I hope they keep the Arrow writers FAR away from this and use The Flash writers instead (or new writers that are as good).

Imagine if they went for a more Gossip Girl/One Tree Hill approach. Jughead would secretly have bulimia. Reggie would be a drunk driver and kill someone. Archie would have STDs from all that hooch. Veronica would be in love with Betty, etc.

from CBR's interview with Archie CEO Jon Goldwater

This is a current, modern, live-action take of Archie and Betty and Veronica. It's the love triangle with a lot of surprises. Very current, very modern, not anything that's retro or that anyone could view as stuck in the past. It's contemporary high school 2016 of Archie and the gang.

So it's going to be fantastic, we're gonna bring in some other characters from the Archie Universe which Roberto can talk to you about. We're expanding, it's not just the Riverdale gang. You know, we have a big library of characters, so some of them are gonna be there as well and the show is going to be called "Riverdale."

on when the pilot should produced

I think we're talking very soon. I think you're talking the top of 2016, I think we're right there.

The new ongoing with Waid was fantastic.

Hah I didn't want to bring it up but since someone already did, yeah just the first issue and it was fantastic.
If you never read an Archie comic before the new series is a great jump in point.

New details!

This is not quite your grandma’s Archie comics come-to-life.

The casting breakdowns for The CW’s Riverdale pilot, which promises a live-action, modern-day take on the iconic comic book characters (in a Riverdale where “secrets, intrigue and scandal abound”), reveal greater muscle mass for our carrot-topped group leader, a stressed-out Betty, scandal-stricken Veronica and new adversity for Jughead to

Prolific TV producer Greg Berlanti is among the project’s executive producers, while Archie Comics’ chief creative officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is penning the pilot.

Here now, the specific breakdowns for the Core Four:

ARCHIE ANDREWS | A high school sophomore, the redhead is still boyishly handsome but “pumped and looking good after working construction for his dad during the summer.” Archie is grappling with heavy issues and juggling the interest of several girls while discovering his passion for writing and performing music against his father and his football coach’s better wishes. Oh, and he’s harboring more than one dark, terrible secret.

BETTY COOPER | The blonde and pretty sophomore is described as having “some self-esteem issues and affinity for Adderall.” Eager-to-please, wholesome and studious, Betty has a super-crush on her longtime best bud, Archie. But tired of being the “perfect” everything, she turns to her new friend, Veronica, for life advice. Betty has an emotionally brittle mom, a goth-like sister and a coveted spot on the cheerleading squad — though with certain conditions….

VERONICA LODGE | Producers are aiming to ideally cast a Latina as this “silver-tongued” stunner, who has just returned to Riverdale from New York following a scandal which resulted in her father going to prison. Extremely intelligent, self-confident and immediately popular, Veronica is eager to reinvent herself — from Mean Girl to caring friend.

JUGHEAD JONES | A hearing-impaired actor is being sought to play Jughead as an “emo-heartthrob.” The lanky lad is Archie’s former best friend, seeing as the two still are smarting from a rift that took place between them. Angry, but with a philosophical bent, Jughead “refuses to take the olive branch being proffered by Archie, the hurt goes that deep.”
