Boys, let's be honest here, they aren't delaying 'cause it needs more time in the oven, they're delaying it because they've - basically - backed themselves in a corner and they they're pretty much panicked.
Unfortunately (for them), this is your typical "damned if you do, damned if you don't" scenario, game has already gathered negative attention due their fuck up(s) but at the same time it's something that can't be undone :
What are they supposed to do ? swap Yasuke for another character ? That'd would be admitting their fuck up and expose them for the hypocrites they are.

See, fixing Tori gates (that shouldn't be there), horse animations etc is easy, backpedalling on that PC and holier than thou approach is not since one side has been up in arms for a few months now but, the other side is also going to criticize them for caving under pressure if they actually have the balls to do that kind of backpedalling.

Again, they've backed themselves in a corner, it's an impossible scenario either way for them and the buyout thing is obviously not going to help things.

For the last decade, Assassins Creed has been the paradigm of playing it safe. In the minds of the present creators, you can't play it any safer than a DEI main character who will get universal praise from the media and the usual crowd. You can't say with a straight face that this is a bold move.

And this is even more notorious in the year that Ghost of Yotei features a female lead, also as expected. Both are playing it safe, according to their own agendas.

The only way for Ubisoft to do something unique is by innovating in mechanics, narrative and many other elements that have stagnated. For that they need a kind of talent that isn't in the house anymore.

The safe move for them here would have been to have an Asian male lead. The fact that they didn’t do that and might stand on that decision is bold IMO. I think the game looks good and hopefully it is when it gets released. The DEI conversation is exhausting, we should all just want good video games at the end of the day.

The industry will balance things at some point but if bad Tripe A games continue to be release nothing else really matters at that point.

I think the decision to make Yasuke the main character was ideologically driven - it was also culturally insensitive and failed to appeal to customers en masse. It was a bunch of out of touch people deciding virtue signalling was more important than research (as can be seen by Chinese architecture and out of season plants/trees in the trailer, for example), history (their "source" was full of shit), and releasing a polished game (noticeable issues in the trailer).

I do hope you're right that the industry will balance things at some point, but it will take time. In the meantime, exhausting though it may be, the conversation around DEI will continue simply because of its continued implementation into games.

The development of this game started way before the discourse around DEI in games changed in the way it has now. The game got bashed for trying to virtue signal with a black protagonist in a historical japanese setting, and they decided to do that before they knew there would be backlash, how is that bold? They just have a crap sense of where the market was going or not good enough gameplay to compensate for my political agenda.

I would not call myself bold for deciding to cook something easy and mundane just because the grocery store ran out of ingredients before I got there.

But at this point they're not going to get out of the negativity unless the game is actually really good. The worst offender isn't even Yasuke. They dug themselves a massive hole with their historical expert being some kind of con man. And the torii gate statue did not help. They've basically come out of every new controversy looking more incompentent and ironically more out of touch.

But I honestly don't think AC gameplay has ever looked particaulary good in video format. AC2 and maybe Brotherhood are the only gameplay demonstrations that look interesting. I loved Valhalla, but I won't blame anyone that thought the game looked like shit based on the gameplay they showed ahead of the release.

I’m sorry chaps but…

It’s Assassins Creed.

For all it’s failings I love these games; more and more since Origins and Odyssey.

Being able to just lol around in ancient historical settings, to be fully immersed in such rich depictions of historical cultures with sandbox exploration and tried and tested AC gameplay to keep you occupied as you go. It’s just good clean fun that can keep you busy for a few months until the next big game drops.

Plus I do love the more fantastical parts like the Olympus/Hades/Valhalla/Asgard/Jotunheim/All of Valhalla DLC/etc. it’s a shame we didn’t get anything like that exploring a more fantastical depiction of a “land of the gods” in Origins. It would have been all kinds of amazing to see a vivid depiction of the Egyptian pantheon realised for once in media (no one has done this well yet outside of the Marvel Moon Knight show but just about barely).

I’m very much ignoring all the BS controversy around this game and will take it for what it is; yet another AC game, set in a fascinating setting of ancient feudal Japan, that will let me bob about as a fucking ninja and a samurai? Damn! I’m down all day long.

It will be bloated, it will be samey, it will be well trodden, it will be formulaic as fuck…

But it will also be immersive, rich, elaborately crafted, and fun as hell, whilst keeping me entertained for as long as I want to be.

I really hope they bring in more fantastic elements too, if only as DLC, and we get to go on missions to fight Oni, Yokai, etc, with the typical Isu window dressing to try to semi-ground it in plausibility and congruence with the main AC backstory & theme.

Guilty pleasure.

Historical accuracy is an essential part of the series, as exemplified by George Washington wizard necromancer final boss in AC3.

First impression was not good if people started complaining right away. That is the opposite of a good impression.

I don't think you have to be a historian to appreciate a historical setting. And while I appreciate the fantastical elements they've started introducing more and more (like the Gorgon and Minotaur in Odyssey) I understand that a lot of people don't. They can dislike the game for any reason they want. If the game is actually good, people will play it.

I've played every AC except the PSP and DS games, and I honestly think the game looks pretty rough for a series that is 14 games in. It looks unpolished and is launching at a higher price than the last game. If the game isn't going as hard into the helix store as the previous game it's because they are already abandoning the game due to the poor public perception, and moved on to the next game.

What are some things that you believe look better than the previous game(s)?

Edit: I forgot Mirage was the last game. That one sucked ass and should've stayed as DLC for Valhalla. It was unpolished and arcady as hell. And Shadows looks like more of that to me.

Yep pretty much, although I would point out had they used a week later or before there would be no reason to be in this regard, the prior delays date was no issue for example. It's only because they already pissed off the Japanese specifically prior that it's happening here.
