Assassin's Creed Shadows Preview (Hands on) and Description

I saw a couple of previews and while Naoe can do everything an AC protagonist should be able to do in an AC game, Yasuke can't and all the controversy surrounding him wasn't worth him being a Tank who crashes through even walls and nothing like a real Samurai, and is very limited in his playstyle, if i ever get the game i will just play as Noae, i wouldn't play a whole AC with a Yasuske like character anyway even if he was an Alien!.

Holy shit the SkillUp video, wtf at Yasuke's limitations.

What the hell was Ubi thinking?

Edit: omg that scouting system, what a wasted opportunity.
edit2: lol at being able to just kill random npc's with zero consequences. No guards, no wanted system, nothing.
It’s shocking bad. Yosuke characterization aside, it’s insane that they made no bounty system or that his combat seems so overpowered.

I don’t get the design decisions behind it. It’s just dumb AF.

yeah i know, Ronin gameplay is basically Nioh gameplay, that is amazing

How Ronin is not out on PC amazes me, companies really like to lose money
It’s aggravating as hell, that’s for sure. Wonder if Sony has the usual 1 year agreement for it or something.

I can design a better looking npc than Yasuke in Cyberpunk 2077 in less than a minute. What a joke huh, he looks so generic and uninspired

I don't like playing as tank/brute characters in any game - ever. I like dexterity builds with fast attacks, bows, poison skills and traps. I spec my characters that way in any game that gives me the option, including the recent big AC games (I skipped Mirage).

Being forced to play a tank/brute is just a big nope for me.

UI seems disabled in that video, that's why you don't see a health bar (or anything UI-related).

Bandit camps typically have one or more "elite" enemies who have indeed more health. And the game has difficulty settings to give enemies even more health.

The fight with that girl at the start was a bossfight, btw.

Ok, makes more sense. The game looks really fun.

I’ll give it a go if I can play through the story without being forced into grinding side content. Even that depends on the length and repetitiveness of it.

Valhalla is hands down one of the worst games i’ve ever played. If this is anything like that then I am out.

Nioh 1 came out 8 months later
Nioh 2 came out 11 months later (March 2020/Feb 2021).
Ronin came out March 2024. So yeah, maybe we'll get a surprise launch really soon. RotR is the only game really that I want to play that's stuck on PS5, that I think will release on PC.

It’s crazy how fucked they are with the choice of going with Yasuke as the main character. No matter what they do or how good the game is, they are fucked and there is no way to change it at this point.

I feel like Interstellar is next in line and ND should look to AC:Shadows as a case for turning the ship now or be fucked later.

Looks like 10% will have to be played at the minimum as Yasuke. But I’m leaning the same way after the previews.

This just looks exhausting and boring and misses the point of what made AC a good concept in initially. Playing as a hulk character in AC is completely off. Agility, acrobatics, stylish stealthy executions and elegant traversal are the hallmarks that made the game what it is. Replacing that with a character that just barges his way through the game makes the whole thing pointless to me. Perhaps some people will like it but it just looks like a generic third person button mashing brawler where you don't need any skill to proceed. Push forward/mash X and spend ages in menus. No thank you.

I watched SkillUp’s impressions video and then Jorraptor’s and they basically say the exact opposite things. Not sure what to think atm.

Its a mix. There is also some very odd situations going on with this that I can't understand even outside of the fact that its previews and we will all play differently. For example I played 50/50 with the characters and ignored some later boss stuff so I could explore and test situations.
I saw some saying they basically refused to play with one or the other character then said they would or wouldn't like the other anyway. Which, for previews isn't the greatest way to gather ideas on what you would like or dislike about either. Especially in a large game with divergent character types or how often we as gamers get surprised by good things or bad things we didn't expect in games all the time.

People saying Yas can't sneak at all, then some saying he can, saw a couple videos saying he can't go prone but he can. Saying the scouts/agents/hirelings system isn't a thing when that was also explained with the region rating when you are wanted in that region and also the base construction changes to those as well as the allies that can fight with you. Or that depending on how you enter situations it can change it. Also we had the difficulties explained to us prior to starting. It was right in the script with explanations for how they changed combat and I have seen comments about all sorts of stuff around that.

Thats not ignoring that with any AC game there are always vast idiosyncrasies(as someone who hasn't been in love with them). Or that sometimes this stuff just isn't for me personally.
But there is a ton of "this isn't in the game or this and this happens" when it was in the documentation and right in the description with the demoist. It frustrates me that while it may have real issues there was some flat out wrong information given too and I don't even understand how. It muddies up the REAL issues with some odd fud.

Yea, SkillUp said the guys combat was very basic and there is no consequences or authority to deal with if you start killing everyone. Then Jorraptor says his combat is varied and the whole village will turn on you and guardians will come after you if you start killing everyone. I’m left like, wha???

Haven’t watched your video yet but I will.

No need I can explain what I saw here. The Samurai, to me is pretty varied. With not only the mix and match weapon switches but the focus attacks that are needed(especially on hard as enemy use of their own specials change) also guardians are insanely hard on hard. Or can be if you don't REALLY clear out space to move and react.
He also has more weapons and he learns special(not shown in skill list) moves with katas he learns that are added to the actual flow of normal combat. For example x,y,x normally could be x,y,x and then another button combo that does a completely different move than any bought.(simplified for this). He also can stun on the 4th hit of moves usually which means the kata can be injected before the stun to purposefully shortchanged to NOT stun so that you can do the kata then the stun at the end.

I am not saying its SUPER detailed like some fighting game or whatever, but even in the short time I was seeing things and playing much of that I could do or was explained or in documentation.

There is a region system that tracks heat(basically) and if it goes too high you are attacked on sight. To calm it you either switch characters or move the season forward and let it calm. Or you can hire scouts to go into the cities and cause anarchy until the region focuses on them and not you. As well as get characters to fight with you in some situations.
I can't speak for killing villagers. I was told by 4 other players that you DID have repercutions that fit into the regions heat rating as we know exists. But I never tried to kill villagers.

I am of two minds on this. They could have thought lets go with that Samurai are able to kill with impunity(they aren't but under some circumstances they could) but that would be odd with how we know the heat system works. Or HE can and she can't. Which would also explain the oddity.

Honestly, it looks much better than the first gameplay they showed. And I like the dual protagonist setup. However, as they chose the woke politics route with many things (not just this particular game) and I expect 5-year-old level lame activist writing, best I can do is buying a used copy eventually.

Reminder that this game is $70. You're better of buying Ghost of Tsushima or Rise of Ronin.
so what?
70 is nothing. Deal with it.
Games wer 60$ in 2007 when AC1 released.
That's 93$ today with inflation.

GAMES GOT WAY CHEAPER.
Being angry at 70$ is the biggest nonsense gamers do nowadays. Everything else around you got 2-3 times more expensive in the last 4 years ALONE. let alone since 2007.

I think the game looks just fine. Just like another AC. Story might be interesting, there is a twist on the combat compared to previous games.
The hate boner people have for this game FOR NO FUCKING REASON AT ALL is insane.
Why? Because there is a black dude?! Or because he "is a ninja"?! Who fucking cares cmon people

Generally not blowing anyone’s hair back. And it needed to, to compensate for the poor image it’s burdened with.
but think about it.... what poor image? why?
This is the most artificial, manufactured hate campaign I've seen in a long time.
Asmongols hates this game. He watches every preview material and shits on it. Even if he watches a great trailer he likes all he manges to say is "not terrible".

Everyone hates this game. It is dead on arrival. We know there is no saving it.
But why? Because the dude is black? Or because he is a samurai... a person whom past is not well known is a cool samurai dude in a video game. And somehow people are mad?
It's a franchise about aliens and recreating ancient memories as a video game in-universe.
I realize the franchise might have a lot of problems. Not a fan myself but I cannot see a HONEST real reason why people hate this other than because other people hate it.
Now it's too late and no influencer will change course because they will be labeled woke.

Seriously. Black ninja used to be cool concept (afro samurai anyone?)
And I think it could be an awesome coming of age /isekai story type with how challenging it will be for him to become a "samurai" or whatever they will call it.
There are ton of other samurai samurai games.

Yeah maybe the combat is iffy? But that's not the real hate reason. People hated it way before they showed any gamepaly. Because you play as a black dude. that's all there is to it.
I am the last person to be woke. I hate woke shit... but people are just racist about this one and invent ton of nonsense reasons to hate on it.
Genuinely thinking about buying AC game new for first time in a long time just because the story might be interesting.

Odyssey is my favorite entry in the AC series by far. I love the settings and (as I have mentioned in a zillion other posts here) I love collecting stuff. I keep reading the same impressions "it feels more like Odyssey than X game" from previews/impressions so that goes a long way in my book.

Then you would not be in agreement with me as in fact I think of most people who cover games I am one of the only one that pays their own way in all ways and always have including flights, buying the games, and any trips. Of which I have done 5 hands on travel previews in 10 years because that situation is troublesome and for me expensive. Doesn't make me better just saying that, if people understand money, paying is the OPPOSITE of being paid. Even if opinions on a title in a review/preview don't agree.

If someone can't handle me not being paid and wanting to correct information they shouldn't watch. Many people are sponsored consistently and if they like them, better feel free. But pretending that one of the few who does hold to not do paid for previews, paid trips, is just a losing game.

Also lets not pretend I don't have my issues with AC games, in fact Ubisoft titles as a whole many of them and have. It's a preview not a review.
There is a massive difference between correcting a couple bits of actual incorrect data in a preview and "fluffing up" Regardless of any lines drawn.
As I said in the last messages. This is about disliking or liking something for factual reasons so that those factual reasons are clear every single time to the dev/pub and in discussion.

There is huge unreasonable hate campaign for the game.
It's so bad that people and maybe even some reviewers, lost it.
It will be one of those games impossible to judge with others reviews.
Fair judgement of systems will/already is clouded by the said hate campaign.
Without playing a single minute of it, people already hate it and watching your review will not bring any reason back. Just like with forspoken. The game and it's gameplay got totally lost about the hate and nobody even remembered why.

ANYWAY - very nice video preview. Thanks for that!
My question as someone who skipped last few AC games because I got fatigued with AC in the past.
Do You think this is a good return point? Or might end up being as bloated and huge as people say valhalla is ?
And does every mission got cutscenes with both protagonists?! or it it like gta5 where some missions are for him and some for her?
I wonder if it will ever end up like you are missing out playing more as one character than another

I have only liked 1 of the new AC games after review. So I can't speak to it being a good jumping in point until I review it. The other stuff isnt fully known as it was only 5 hours.

the main thing for me with these ac games is that they feel like work with so much to do.... at least this is how I felt few games back. I've not played the london AC, origins and after that

Every Youtuber dweeb shit on this game when it came out because "tHe HoRsE rUnNiNg AniMaTioN loOkS LiKe PS3", when it ended up having the last laugh as the only samurai game with a halfway competent combat system. Even Ghost of Tsushima paled in comparison.

Proof that graphics are not everything.

In fairness Rise of the Ronin is a PS5 exclusive that looks like a launch PS4 game at best. The graphical fidelity is outrageously bad and put a lot of people off. The combat is great but man it is not pleasant on the eyes at all.

Seeing Stellar Blade and Rise of Ronin next to each other is wild, it's borderline two generation difference even though they're both PS5 exclusives.

The hate is because it’s obvious woke pandering and not a sincere work. If racism was the case behind it then why many consider Bayek as one of the best AC protagonists ever? Sure, there are some who really hate it becuse they are racists, but that’s a small minority compared to the other people who hate it for the woke pandering.

Was The Last Samurai woke for US marine to become Samurai in Japan?
At least it's an opening for interesting story.

If they did it for woke points, then the story will suck ass and it will be clear.
