Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) manga thread of TOTAL SPOILER PANDEMONIUM

When thinking about how they would adapt the manga, I totally didn't expect them to spend the time on the other characters. I thought they would just rush through it. Kudos to them for the approach though. This season's been strong so far.

Oh, I forgot about that. When it was revealed'

The last episode had me in stitches with the Reiner warrior/soldier dynamics. I wonder if his soldier persona couldn't read the herring can but his warrior persona could.
No. It's just a really old language.

It's just supposed to fore shadow Ymir's age.

Well, it's not like she's older than the walls, but she can know about languages that are unknown inside the walls.
And it's not just that: they shouldn't even know what herrings are. People inside the walls don't know anything about the ocean.

The walls are only 100 years old.

She's most likely older than that.

She really isn't. See the story she told in her letter to Historia, how she was turned into a mindless titan and released on Paradis by Marley much like Grisha was (i.e. the 145th king's walled society already existed then), and how she told Bertolt that she had spent around 60 years wandering around as a mindless titan (until she ate Marcel and got his titan shapeshifiting power, 5 years before the fight at Utgard).
She's "only" around 60 years older than she looks.

People eating each other in the anime thread over what seems like honest speculation. This is why I try to stay out of those.

I've never seen the OVA, is that stuff covered in the manga or a completely different side story?

Spoilers are out...

Ymir was eaten

Marley celebrates their victory

Mule Titan is a girl

Mads Mikkelsen makes a cameo

Marley sent warships to Paradis and they were all destroyed.

An interesting chapter.

It's funny to watch the anime now and then read the manga, and notice how far has advanced. Now it's about international politics, technological progress and Marleyans vs Eldians being at a crucial crossroad. Eldians are brainwashed into being obedient and useful to be redeemed, but what will happen when they lose their military value??
Also, despite saying the opposite to Falco, Reiner seems to have doubts about the the price one has to pay with the war. I think it's possible he is going to prime Falco to do what he should have done, betray Marley.

Also, we learn lots of things
-Colt is the son of Zeke?
-Ymir is dead, dead.
-Jaw titan is dancing titan. It seems Ymir wasn't of the 'right' bloodline so that's why she didn't have the full feature set (the jaw).
-Reiner felt guilty because his friend died (when Ymir gained the shifter ability) and Galliard is his brother, who blame Reiner.
-Cart titan is a woman.
-Paradis is doing pretty good, eliminating 32 destroyers without anyone escaping.
-In a way putting so many titans on the island was a mistake, that was like a evolutive pressure to advance anti-titan weaponry that no one in the world have.
-Ackermans confirmed to be another bloodline with powers, developed when Titan science was done. In fact this is the first confirmation of someone saying that yeah, it's 'titan science', so at some point the wold had future technology.

I'll have to actually read the Japanese original to be 100% sure, but that really looks like a shitty translation (one of many).

Not sure why you'd call that "future technology"... It doesn't seem all that different from those injections that turn people into mindless titans: they had those titan powers for a couple of millennia, and that was more than enough time for them to experiment and come up with some derivative applications.

Hmmm, yeah, I'm reading the translation discussion on the subreddit, and meaning is completely different in the Korean scanlation.

Despite the initial confusion, I'm loving the manga right now. I really like how the perspective has changed and after the timeskip we're following the people of the Marley empire, who were pretty much a mystery for the majority of the manga.

Hmm. That Zeke dude sure knows about a lot of things...

Relatively recently, we were wondering just how much Marley knew about what happened with Grisha when he was sent to Paradis, and while it seemed relatively likely that they'd connect the major dots based on Reiner / Bertolt's report, here, Zeke apparently knows pretty much everything, even the Owl's involvement.

I've been wondering for quite some time why Zeke was thinking about "king Reiss" rather than "king Fritz" (since that's the name the royal family was using when the walls were created) during the fight for Wall Maria, and now, the author doubles down on that and has him talk about the name change. How does he know about that? Did Reiner / Bertolt / Annie find out about that before the main characters, really?

Zeke's also talking about the two Ackermans they have to deal with... But even Levi himself didn't know he was an Ackerman until fairly recently (and Reiner / Bertolt / Annie weren't around to hear about it). I guess it could just be guesswork based on how strong he is, sure, but...?

So... is there something weird going on, there?
Is he somehow able to spy on his enemies' memories (a bit like how Kruger apparently tapped into Grisha's future right before dying)?
Or could it maybe have something to do with the missing Marley titan (they reportedly had seven of those, but we've only seen six)?

EDIT: I should probably add that what makes the whole thing even stranger is that Zeke clearly didn't know much of anything about the walled society when he first showed up (he didn't even know about their weapons), and while it looks like he now somehow knows about as much as the main characters did in the aftermath of the battle for Wall Maria, he appears to be in the dark when it comes to more recent developments (although I guess that might be a facade?)...

Was the Attack Titan considered one of the 7? We thought the Jaw titan was one of them, but now it's confirmed to be Ymir's powers. (RIP)

We're back to having an unknown titan power floating out there.

While the recent chapters, well since the conclusion of the business with the royal family, have all been fantastic, I'm not 100% sold on this timeskip business.

It's very different to normal story telling I guess. We've gone years without seeing the characters we've mostly been with through the story. Their current situation is 100% unknown and the last we saw of them was in many senses primitive to the state the rest of the world is in.

However I'm digging the making of Reiner into a sympathetic character. I've viewed the guy as a very lucky arse for a lot of the story.

Watching the anime as it airs now is very strange as someone mentioned above. The story has come a very long way since.

It's kinda funny how anime watchers have already predicted the twist. I guess that month in between chapters makes people forget. But, I don't think the twist with Bert and Reiner being Titans will be a huge deal. Most my friends already heavily suspect them as Titans due to their odd behavior.

Oh and this new translation is soooo much better.

It's kinda sorta important if Zeke did indeed hide the fact he has royal blood.

I love how much we learn each chapter, every single one advances the plot quite a bit.
Nah, man, nothing ever happens! Boooooring!
Besides, it all went downhill when Eren turned into a titan! Why isn't the series just soldiers slicing up / getting eaten by titans over and over again?

EDIT: Something else I just noticed in the new episode: when he was taken to Paradis, Grisha called one of his fellow resistants "Guraisu" ("グライス"). I wonder how Colt and Falco's family name is spelled in Japanese, because "Glais" sure looks similar... Not to mention they do look like the guy. Could absolutely be off the mark or a coincidence though (would relatives of a known resistant be enrolled like that?).

I think it's mostly guesswork, albeit highly reasoned guesswork (like Light in Death Note or something). He's probably got a good idea of what an Ackerman would be able to do, and I'm sure Levi and Mikasa fit that really well.

That rules. I love it.

semen stains the mountaintops
I agree that it's cool that we don't know what the fuck is going on with Eren and CO. Everyone in this chapter kinda seemed a bit scared of whatever is going on over there, since they sent so many ships and non have returned, so it's obvious that Eren and CO have their shit together.

It's a very non traditional storytelling thing. Normally the focus only shifts like this at a break point like the start of the sequel but here it just kinda happens and we shift focus to a not main character.

Okay Reiner is a pretty key character in the series but still

All of these time skips are pretty wild, too. I can't say I've seen that in any other piece of media before.

I wonder whether we're going to see the impending invasion from Eren and co.'s point of view, from the Marleyans', or a mix of both.

It's also crazy how the threat of titans is becoming a thing of the past.

They started off in the story as an almost insurmountable hurdle. Know they're wiped out on the island and a fading worry for the rest of the world.

Also I'm struggling to understand why Ymir wanted to give up her powers. Especially given the recent anime episode aha.

Edit - On a footnote there were so many directions I speculated this series would go. But the author has subverted them all and is delivering a very unique story. It's quite simply fantastic.

I suspected them as titans due to their connection with Annie way before I caught up with the manga.

I'm more looking forward to the lackluster way they reveal themselves to be animated. It's hilarious.

This. It's not the reveal that stands out in my mind, it's the way it happened.

Yes, one is missing. There's no info on what it is or who controls it (family/faction) as far as I know.

Eren's getting near the end of his lifespan. If anything, Historia will eat everyone in the end.

I'm already a bit annoyed at the Dramatic Rain they've apparently added (based on the preview).

It should be Marley. They were said to have taken control of seven of the nine titans, in Grisha's flashback.

Needs royal blood. Soooooo,
1. Eat Historia
That thing about needing to eat Historia was a typo in the original Japanese. He just needed to touch the transformed Dina, and he thinks it would work with a transformed Historia as well.
(should already work with Zeke, incidentally)
