Expired license + registration but he was on his way to the DMV to get that handled.

I believe him.

I feel like getting to arrest Ice-T is on every cops bucket list:p
Most cops are too young to even know about that song and probably only know him as a cheesy actor. On a side note, pretty much every cop I know listens to Fuck the Police, basically saying the song is a parody at this point.

And here I thought I was lazy, always getting my smog check on the last day of my valid registration. Then it usually takes me a few months to put on the new sticker because ain't nobody got time for that.

The one time a copper noticed it when I was parked at the tennis courts, I had the new paperwork ready to go in the glovebox still sealed in the envelope from the DMV. He was very confused as to how someone could be so lazy... but I explained that it was dark when I took it from the mailbox, and ya know.. adhesive... ya only got one shot to truly get it right... otherwise you got a flaccid nasty sticker. So I put it in a safe space and considered it a 'sticker of opportunity', but the time never quite felt right. After all, how could it have been the right time, if putting the sticker on would have resulted in me and the officer never meeting?

He remained a bit puzzled and asked me to wait while he ran my plates and registration just in case I was running some kind of 'sticker selling scam', which I didn't really understand but I remained polite and let him achieve acceptance of the situation in his own time.

After an altogether not too unpleasant wait he told me I could put my sticker on and be on my way and we parted on good terms. I didn't have the courage to chance a last glace at the patrol car as he left. Don't judge me too harshly. But I hope that the officer made it through the soon-to-come COVID times in good health.

Those tennis courts sure didn't. Thanks Governor Newsom!

Anyway, what I think I'm trying to say is if Ice-T had just a little touch of the "ol' Pegasus charm" and a bit of patience, I bet you that officer would have eventually let him park right there and take a nice healthy walk to the nearby DMV. But alas, he was both pushy and rude.

In times like these I like to consider the words of the late great Rodney King. "Can't we all just get along?"

Indeed Rodney. Can't we, mister T?

Can You Imagine What SureAI Is Going To Do With Garfield?
They call it an expired license. That's what all the kids are doing these days.

So the cop just lies to the sergeant on camera? He didn't say he was going to let him park and then ice-t got out and got rowdy, he told him the car was getting towed immediately, then ice-t asked him if he could just park it and he refused and took his keys, then ice-t got out...

When a video of a USA traffic stop gets posted, I just feel sorry for American citizens, the outcomes from interactions with police seem to be driven entirely by how respected the officer feels.

It seems crazy to me that Ice-T's story never changes but the first cop practically immediately escalates things to saying the car needs to be towed but when the second cop arrives, apparently it doesn't need to be towed, but then also that 4 separate tickets need to issued, but the other policeman says they could just make it 2 if the office hasn't been informed yet.

If the second cop had been the one to make the initial contact, would he have just let Ice-T on his way to the DMV? That sense of getting lucky or unlucky when dealing with law enforcement must be maddening.

So they were expired since 3 years ago but somehow he just now,3 years later on the day a cop pulls him over was heading to the DMV to sort it out....

I'm with the cop on this one...even though he was too strict about the whole thing,at the end of the day,Ice T was driving ILLEGALLY with an expired license and registration.

The whole "you don't have to be so serious about this, you can be but you don't have to" smelled like him trying to flex his celebrity privilege to weasel himself out of the situation and the cop didn't want none of that which probably pushed him to be that strict with him.

Brother even in the original post you got two things but he also has an expired driver's license. That is a triple whammy. They are required to literally make sure you don't drive the vehicle away or a lenient comp will tell you that he can drive away but if he gets pulled over again it would escalate to another type of charge considering the documented proof and video evidence of him being pulled over.

Forgetting the fact that he is a celebrity, anybody who does that should at least fear the repercussions of not being able to drive away potentially. There is cops that will literally do their job and sit there until your ride comes or even have your vehicle impounded. That's why there's laws in this country and I can kind of have some understanding of celebrities being so busy and maybe having handlers and all that stuff but you don't let driver's license, registration, and I don't even know if they mentioned insurance yet in the video since I didn't get far enough. But you can't let three major things like that just magically lapse.

No excuses and I haven't even got to the part where he gets out of the car and that would be considered some kind of charge as well I'm sure. I'm sure he'll be able to buy himself out of this situation but the laws are the laws and if it was one of us we probably would be facing some charges that are hard to get out of at the minimum. Maybe even a little bit of time in the county jail. But as always, famous people are above the law.

Is that California? I don’t think police would be allowed to give a “warning” for that in most areas. They would be getting in trouble themselves if they didn’t have the vehicle impounded. And this *would* be a safety issue.

edit: This was New Jersey.
Apparently this isn’t the first time he’s been caught for this either.

I mean yeah Ice T could have handled that better but cop was being unnecessarily antagonistic. Ive been in similar situations. The most I got was a fix it ticket

Case in point, when he implied Ice T was lying by saying you need an appointment for the DMV. It helps because you dont have to wait as long but Ive walked in plenty of times.

I don't think Ice-T was particularly rude prior to the towing threat, thread but the officer seemed to have been offended by something. He's also caught in a lie when he retcons the story to his superior by pretending that he was going to let Ice-T park his car and walk over to the DMV but decided against it after Ice-T jumped out of the car (the video clearly shows the threat came first). Regardless, Ice-T should have expected this with an expired license. Driving without a valid registration is one thng, but if you have no license and no else to take the car home for you there's a good chance it'll get towed.

Sure did go CrAzY. :pie_eyeroll:

I hate how nowadays so many things are just bait and switches, lol. GOTTA GET THEM CLICKS! Also, considering it's Ice T, this all seems pretty light when revolving around any form of law enforcement, lol.

"Next time, just show some respect."
"I don't have to."

Perfect, lmao.

If this was a regular dude he would have had his vehicle towed without question. It's one thing to be driving around with your registration expired for a month, but years? And an expired license?

You don't need an appointment for the DMV? The hell is the cop talking about.

You write him a ticket or 2 and you keep it pushing.

Cop was being a dick, just because you can throw the book (or in this case 4 tickets and a tow) at someone doesn't mean you should, at least the sergeant who was called went with Ice-T's sensible suggestion of parking it there and going to the DMV on foot and saving everyone some hassle.

If Ice-T didn't have a big folder full of the paperwork he was on his way to the DMV with I'd probably feel different, but he did so 🤷

For an expired registration, the vehicle should be towed. How can the police give a “warning” for that? This isn’t about a broken taillight.

Apparently in Jersey you do need an appointment, at least officially.

Driving with an expired license and an expired registration is more than “a ticket or 2” in every state. It’s easily grounds to have your car towed and impounded. He’s lucky the Sergeant decided to be lenient and let him park the car. In most cases that doesn’t happen.

Spend a few weekends watching On Patrol Live and you’ll see that people driving without valid licenses or registrations is all too common and in most cases the car gets towed.

I guess here its viewed as a mild infraction. Youre given a ticket that says you have to fix the problem within 30 days. You then get your registration, show up in court with proof you registered, and then youre good to go. Otherwise you pay a fine. NBD

Jersey is the only state you have to play to leave so that makes sense that they also don't have walk in appointments for the simplest thing. I stand corrected

As for the tickets, IF he actually has 7 vehicles and they are all registered (which I'm sure they can check) then this oversight however egregious it may be, can be overlooked. I got stopped with bad registration and bad license in the city and they let me ride due to me being out of the country for years.

Well within the cops prerogative to tow the car but the question becomes is the juice worth the squeeze.

it's just silly because the car is basically already in a parking lot, it harms no one for having it be parked there, it's not like he stopped him on a highway.
The cop definitely realised this and that's why he lied to the sergeant about how he was going to let ice-t park it imo.

What time is it?
I don't think either handled themselves well. Police officers need more de-escalation training. Ice T should lean more on the wisdom of his age.

In New Jersey, a vehicle cannot be parked or driven on a roadway if it isn't registered. It is state law under Title 39 which is the motor vehicle law for the entire state. Officers have no discretion with an unregistered vehicle on the road in NJ. I live and work in NJ and my career is in law. Three years isn't the worst I've seen at all, but it's still notable given that registration is annual in NJ. Exceptions are new cars which are 5 years.
