EB sometimes has too many games in-stock, because, obviously, they over-estimated the demand and ordered too many from distributors. They drastically reduce the price to clear out a good amount of a certain game, thus making newer, and even pre-owned ones, rarer. As a result, the company theoretically creates demand for a product, and can raise the price of pre-owned games even HIGHER than they were at the time of the substantial price cut to the new item. By hanging onto pre-owned ones, and keeping the price higher than the clearance product that's new, they don't lose much money on the credit they gave away for it, and can possibly make more money from it when people trade it in later, especially if the price goes up.
