Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas to receive a knighthood and damehood

"Film director Christopher Nolan and his wife, film producer Emma Thomas, are to receive a knighthood and damehood respectively.

The government said the pair were being honoured for their services to film.

Earlier this month, Nolan won his first-ever best director Oscar for Oppenheimer, his film about the father of the atomic bomb.

That film, which Thomas produced, swept the board at the 2024 ceremony, picking up seven prizes in total.

Accepting the best picture prize, Thomas said: "I think any of us who make movies dream of this moment. But it seemed so unlikely that it would ever actually happen."

Nolan had previously been nominated for six Academy Awards, but had never won an Oscar for directing until this year's ceremony.

Aside from Oppenheimer, Thomas has also worked on a string of other Nolan films including Tenet, Dunkirk, Interstellar, The Dark Knight, The Prestige, Batman Begins, Insomnia and Memento.

The pair met while they were students at University College London and they married in 1997.

They have four children together and live in Los Angeles."

Instead of a knighthood he should've been banished to some penal colony in the British Empire somewhere for making Tenet.
Nah he gets a pass from me, the guy has a great hit rate. He's allowed the one dud.

On topic, knighthood's are complete bollocks mostly reserved for celebrity and political donors. Shit should be exclusively for members of the public who do amazing deed's and make massive sacrifices.

This one for Nolan is just to give credibility to that Tory donor knighthood before they get kick out of the door later this year.

Not a bad director but overall only a bit less overrated than JJ Abrams. If these guys had been making movies in the 70s and 80s they'd have been mid tier also-rans.

EviLore EviLore While I think he has made a major contribution to the world of art. Even for the Prestige alone. But the king or royalty use them for publicity. I am sure there are plenty of quiet people behind the scenes that get knighthoods and recognition as well. But they give them to celebrities because it is a mutual exchange of brand promotion, the crown and the celebrity.

I think giving them to celebrities is silly. Give them to people out their fighting Dragons.
I'm not personally a huge fan of the honours system. But they recognise people who have achieved things in various fields. So people who have done great things for charities or community projects as well as other achievements can be recognised, it's not just celebrities. In Nolan's case his work has represented British culture on a global scale and by being one of the most successful and critically acclaimed directors in the world he's continuing the strong arts tradition that the country has.

Knighthood related.

Exposing the sinister cartel of retailers who allow companies to pay for advertising space.
Unpopular opinions:
The Dark Knight was Christopher Nolan's last great movie.
The Prestige is a masterpiece.
The soundtrack of Interstellar is better than the movie.

Not sure of being appointed a sir via the royalty is something to take in high regards seeing their sketchy history/connections and ofcourse those being appointed. I have my suspicions regarding their basis for selection but nonetheless it's a fantastic soft feather up the ass upon receiving said title. Not to say Nolan made some splendid movies or something negative otherwise ofcourse. We're talking Royalty here.

Best director in the business right now with Denis a close second.

I think he peaked with Interstellar, but Dunkirk, Tenet and Oppenheimer all have his trademark style and are all great films.

Denis' last five films are better than Nolan's last five, but Nolan is better overall. Let's see in ten years as Nolan continues to decline, and Denis enters his prime years.

Dune Part 2, Dune Part 1, Blade Runner, Arrival, Prisoners > Oppenheimer, Tenet, Dunkirk, Interstellar, TDKR.

Both need a good 20 years and at least 5 more epics to match Spielberg and Kubrick.

The greatest film maker of the last twenty years. Nobody has had more influence over popular culture.

And The Dark Knight remains his best movie, for many reasons.
