Pirate-themed action game Captain Blood will launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC via Steam this fall, publisher SNEG and developers Seawolf Studio and General Arcade announced.

Captain Blood underwent several iterations throughout the 2000s and was last showcased in 2010 before vanishing for years.

Here is an overview of the game, via its Steam page:

About
There will be BLOOD!
Captain Blood is a pirate-themed action game set on the Spanish Main in the 17th century, where you step into the boots of a fearsome pirate on a quest for gold and glory. Expect wild adventures with cannon firing, pistol shooting, swashbuckling sword fights, and plenty of pirate shenanigans. This action-packed hack-and-slash features fierce hand-to-hand combat, hordes of enemies, and a classic fighting system with flashy combos and epic finishers.
Prepare for intense deck battles where you can fire the ship’s cannons and fend off blood-thirsty boarding crews. Collect gold to upgrade your fighting skills, buy new weapons, and become the most feared buccaneer on the high seas. Fight for wealth and glory!

Key Features

  • Epic Pirate Shenanigans – As Captain Blood, live the life of the bravest and most fearsome pirate on the Spanish Main (or at least fake it convincingly).
  • Intense Action – Dive into fiery hand-to-hand combat and show enemy pirates and landlubbers alike who’s the boss with various slick combat techniques.
  • Ship Deck Brawls – Fight off enemy pirates trying to board your ship with unique moves, combos, and executions while blasting enemy ships to pieces with your cannons!
  • Arsenal of Awesomeness – Arm yourself with cutlasses, pistols, muskets, throwing knives, and hand bombs. Don’t forget those sneaky pirate tricks!
  • Graphic Novel Vibes – Enjoy a unique art style that feels like you’re flipping through a pirate comic book.
The game underwent several iterations throughout the 2000s and was last showcased in 2010 before vanishing for years. Now, we are excited to bring it back, combining its original glory with a series of modern improvements for today’s gamers.

Was I the only one who thought that a game based on the Captain Blood movie starring Errol Flynn might be possible? I mean his license shouldn’t be that expensive.

There's an interesting documentary style video about all this:

Making a game finished, and then proceeding to never release it (well, until now) is wild. The publisher literally had the finished product in their hands and could have just pressed a button to go live, but didn't.

And despite being clearly dated nowadays, it somehow stands out amongst modern games with its charm from yesteryears.

The original developers of the game must all be in their 40s and 50s probably by now. Can't tell if they are excited to see this suddenly pop up now again.

Given SoT killing it this is probably pretty solid timing for a release and some old school TPS combat.

Looks interesting alright.

It's a really good beat em up, well worth getting, like old school God of War.

This game was played by some streamers via a leaked abandonware build.

So 14 years later it now shows up which is cool.

I watched Macaw45 play it over the weekend, what a crazy coincidence that this was announced. The game was great to watch as a Beat Em Up fan. I'm definitely going to pick this up when it releases.

Gave me scurvy just watching this.

$5 is still too much to ask for this liquid shit.

Given another chance
To begin with, I thought it was going to be a remake of this:

Edit: sorry for the cartoon boobs in the thumbnail (not sorry).

Thought the same when I 1st saw the title. One of the best intro music for a game that by Jean Michael Jarre.

Yeah. I was thinking that too. That would be a really good remake. Bonus points if they keep the nudity.

Actually insane seeing this game resurface.
I remember seeing a trailer for this game back in gametrailers.com days, then it just disappeared and I thought the game got canned. Having said that, it obviously looks awful by today's standards.
