Chick-Fil-A Hatches Plans For Streaming Service As Reality TV Comes Home To Roost​

EXCLUSIVE: Chick-Fil-A is moving aggressively into the entertainment space with plans to launch a slate of originals for its own streaming platform.

Deadline understands that the fast-food firm has been working with a number of major production companies, including some of the studios, to create family-friendly shows, particularly in the unscripted space. It is also in talks to license and acquire content.

We hear that this includes a family-friendly gameshow from Glassman Media, the company behind NBC’s The Wall, and Michael Sugar’s Sugar23, which is behind series such as Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why. Deadline understands this show has been handed a ten-episode order.

Budgets on the unscripted side are believed to be in the range of $400,000 per half-hour. Sources told us the idea is to launch later this year and there’s also talk of scripted projects and animation.

Brian Gibson, who has worked on series including History’s Top Gear remake and Fox’s adaptation of The X Factor, is leading the programming charge and has been in talks with various producers.

Chick-Fil-A, known for its fried chicken sandwiches, is the latest company outside of the entertainment industry to move into making its own originals. It joins the likes of Lyft, which has produced shows such as Lucky Lyft, a game show hosted by Bob The Drag Queen, and Airbnb, which previously produced documentary Gay Chorus Deep South that aired on MTV.

Chick-Fil-A, which operates over 3,000 restaurants in the U.S., has previously produced content for its own site before including Stories of Evergreen Hills, a series of short, animated films. It has also diversified into other areas such as making children’s puzzles and games under its Pennycake brand.

One source told Deadline that it was a positive move for the reality TV industry, which has been struggling in recent years, and another source added it was a good opportunity, comparing it to branded content. Chick-Fil-A declined to comment.

Reality TV makes hundreds of millions in revenue over traditional TV, but they are overshadowed on most streaming services by the traditional big stuff when logging into an app. If someone were to make an app where you are not only seeing only Reality TV when logging in, but you are also up to date on new reality TV offerings, I could see the potential in earning money there.

The worst that could happen is they crash and burn like Dramafever (they tried to make a streaming app full of only K-drama and J-drama).

No they're going to do like they used to do when Nickelodeon went off the air and broadcast the playboy channel until sunrise on Monday.

Makes sense because chick fil a doesn't think their rules apply to sex workers and it's everyone's day off anyway

The goal of a business is not to lower prices to the point where they don't generate any profit. That serves no purpose other than operating as a charity for consumers, and is unsustainable in the long run. If you can make a lot of money while remaining competitive and satisfying your customers, you should make that money.

A large company artificially reducing prices to put pressure on competitors is generally considered to be an anti-competitive business practice that drives small businesses out of the market entirely, since they can't operate at a loss at individual locations to remain competitive, while the big players can. E.g., Walmart kills its small business competitors in local economies with this strategy.

It is definitely a weird play for a fast food company to enter an already heavily saturated streaming service market, though, yes, and could be a waste of resources. But Chick-Fil-A apparently sees an opportunity to market to its family-oriented customers. We'll see!

I have some differing opinions about the profit aspect, but let’s not derail the thread. Hopefully if the streaming service does fail (which seems likely, the streaming market is too crowded as it is), they won’t stubbornly hold on longer than they should but rather abandon ship. I’m sure they have enough money that it wouldn’t greatly hurt their company, but still hopefully they don’t overplay their hand here and wind up losing a lot of cash.

What a strange revenue stream for a fast food franchise to venture into, I also didn’t know they made children’s puzzle games. For all the money they have it’s still a shame they failed to open a branch here in the UK.

If you think about it from Chick-fil-A's perspective it makes sense because Jesus chicken™ alone isn't going to shift America toward a more Christian nation. If we're lucky we'll get some televangelists preaching prosperity gospel in the mix

Sorry to derail but does anyone else remember when the chick fil a sandwich cost half as much and the patty was twice as big?
prices looked the same to me. its the other fast food resutrants that have increased their prices.

but i had a really tiny spicy chicken patty the other day and i was like wtf happened here. i remember them popping out of the sandwich they used to be so big. really hoping it was a one off thing.
