[Circana] PS5 lifetime unit sales in the US are 7% ahead of PS4; Xbox Series trails Xbox One by 18%

Sony's fault. Strike 1, 2 and 3 against PC ports.
Don't disagree, but really feel the driving factor is MS making everything day and date there. If you're already in PC or were on the fence, makes sense to stay or just go there.
Would be interesting to see how many people this was. I cannot imagine many. Less for gen 8 than gen 7 for sure.
Yes, I would imagine this is the lowest. I'm not a perfect example as I didn't own a X1, but I would have bought one if they had games I wanted. For the Series X? I could be offered it for $100 and would pass. It's redundant if you already have a PS5 now. Again, I don't think the number is high for this point but I also don't think it's zero.
We forget that many GTA5 sales were repeats - first it was on PS3, then it was ported to PS4, then it came out on PC, then the Shark Cards economy apparently incentivizes the re-purchase of the game. THEN, it lands on the PS5.
Sure but it's still gonna sell a lot of consoles. College football did and I think that's got a lot less pull imo than something like GTA. Plus GTA is one game. One day, CoD is gonna stop being made for PS4/X1. Overall point for this one, hardware sales may be down. But it's not like more people aren't playing in the same ecosystems still.

The US and the UK are the only two significant markets for MS during all their console generations anyways. But I was compering the Xbox One compared to the success of Xbox 360 in the US.

Xbox 360 LTD in the US is around 46 million., and The Xbox One sales around 33 million? That's a huge drop. I call it a flop and you may call it underwhelming? same same but different.
We have to take into account that this is compared against the first four years of 360 and and Xbox One, which doesn't include the 360 Kinect bump.

By the end of 2017 Xbox One was at 20.1 million, while at the end of 2009 the 360 was at 18.6 million.

So Xbox Series is 13% down from a console that was selling faster than the 360.

I wouldn't even say Xbox One's sales were underwhelming. It had sold/good sales in the US, just didn't get the magic late-life Kinect boost the 360 got.

It seriously may be true!

Indiana Jones
Doom the Dark Ages
Ninja Gaiden 4 (iffy)

Vs.

Death Stranding 2
Ghost of Yotei

Lots of unknowns still on both sides.

Should be a good year overall

GTA6 will put the PS5 well ahead of the PS4... At the end of the generation, Sony is probably looking at well over 125 million units sold. Given that the PS5 will probably get a long tail, it could potentially surpass 130 million units. If people consider the handheld as part of the PS5 family, then you're going to be looking at 180+ million units.

But for some reason people think Sony has to be in a rush to discount units when they're more than happy with the pace of sales.

The separation that online gaming discussion has compared to reality is just way too wide a chasm.

What's "the handheld"?

Good point regarding the Xbox 360 kinect bump as I forgot about that.

However, The Xbox One ended up -28% decline compared to its predecessor which is a considered a huge drop by any metric. You can call it good sales in the US from a vacuum, but its bad when looking at past trends.

And its looking like the Xbox S/X will do much more than the already hugely declined Xbox One compared to the Xbox 360. That is 2 Consecutive back to back huge drops console generations.

I would say the One sold disappointingly compared with its predecessor, while still selling well overall. Certainly not a flop.

Like how the 3DS in Japan sold a lot less than the DS, while selling well in that country overall.

And yes the Series has flatlined and the gap between it and the One will continue to grow.

I know GTAVI will push sales further and more than usual considering it's the biggest game of this gen already even if it's not out yet

But Sony needs to release more actually good games and leave behind this GAAS initiative that's going nowhere while keeps burning money

Stop pretending like GaaS games don't rule the industry. It's silly to have your head in the sand even if the games aren't up your alley.

You sound like people saying X Company shouldn't make talkies and should keep making silent movies. It's ignoring market realities. The initiative has already produced what is likely their best selling game of all time.

Sony also has several other projects in the works that will contribute greatly to continued PS5 sales such as Intergalactic, Death Stranding 2, Ghost of Yotei, and Wolverine. These 4 games alone should be sufficient for the rest of the generation, but we know there will be more than that.

This is the best console Sony have ever designed. That's sure. But the first party games are the worst ever bar a few exceptions.

Both things can be true. People are just playing more multiplat, free games and GAAS games. And the cost of a decent PC also skyrocked those last few years. I know families that have a PS5 to play... Fornite on their couch. Convenient, easy and not expensive (particularly in US).

Shouldn't the PS5 have absorbed more of the Xbox numbers, even if the US? Where are the rest going?

First off, they have, which is why their up against the PS4, but as others mentioned many have decided to go to PC, and many have simply stuck with X1.

By the time the generation is over though, the PS5 is going to be up considerably over the PS4, by at least 10-15%. If it can do that globally, that would result in about 128-134 million units sold and it'll be the second best selling PlayStation console in history.

Depending on its longevity during the PS6 era (I expect the PS6 to launch for a minimum of 600 dollars), you could definitely see the PS5 reaching closer and closer to PS2 levels if it can get actual price drops. At some point in 2026, I expect we'll see the PS5 Digital for as cheap as 350 dollars outside of just holiday discounts, with Holiday discounts we could be looking at as low as 300 dollars.

Xbox hardware division better change course fast

This is actually kind of sad. My favorite consoles, ranked:
  1. Xbox Series X
    • The look and feel of this device is sublime, and the interface is extremely smooth. The controllers were an upgrade of my previous favorite controller which was also from Microsoft - the Xbox 360 controller. The games are lacking, but if I could have a modded Xbox Series X capable of playing the games of all other consoles, I would do that versus having any of the other consoles in this list being able to play Xbox games.
  2. PlayStation 3
    • Specifically, the OG 60GB model of the PlayStation 3 that had backwards compatibility with PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games.
  3. PlayStation 2
    • When this came out it was an absolute beauty. It was beefy, but it looked... powerful. It had backwards compatibility with PlayStation games, and it had a DVD player built in. And it had SO. MANY. GAMES.
  4. Xbox 360
    • Halo and Lost Odyssey were all I ever needed. The Xbox 360 controller was the first controller that I resonated with. I always used one up until the Xbox Series controllers were released.
  5. PlayStation Vita
    • Playing my PlayStation 4 games on the go was fun, but getting custom firmware and being able to also play virtually all PlayStation Portable games was even more fun.
  6. PlayStation
    • This console introduced me to Final Fantasy, and thus a new love emerged.
  7. Super Nintendo Entertainment System
    • The first video game console I ever owned, and it had the first video game I ever played - Super Mario World. That is also the first game I ever got every secret on.
  8. Nintendo Switch
    • This is only ranked this low because it came out at a time that I did not care about portability which is half of its appeal. The Nintendo Switch would have been ranked higher if I had played it when I was younger.
  9. Dreamcast
    • It had some crazy-innovative and/or unique games. Crazi Taxi was a blast to play. There were so many arcade games that were a perfect fit. SEGA's first-party releases were on-point with this console.
  10. Sega Saturn
    • Fight me, people. I thought this thing was great. It was a weird controller (coming from a SNES), and I got this secondhand with a ton of games.
In terms of hardware, Microsoft nailed it with the Xbox Series X and the Xbox Series controller. They fumbled with content, direction, and studio management.

my milkshaker is an xbox, did they count it? Ah, now that think better, by Cooking Robot is an Xbox too. I don't think they are counting them. Xbox sold trilions for sure.

Surprised PS5 is ahead by that much with a higher launch price and still no price cut. PS4 was already $299 by this point wasnt it? Arrogant Sony about to become even more arrogant. There's zero threat to their dominance.

Despite of the many blunders of Sony management especially in the west with failed dei and woke infested live service and gaas, it is impressive those sales numbers. Sony has to be grateful to there fans for being patient and loyal fans including me. Hopefully Sony will be back to its good old single player exclusives focus starting this year. And also hopefully abandon woke infested DEI initiative.

They fucked up the hardware, too.

Slower SSD than PS5, worse performance, more costly to manufacture, and zero innovation on the controller

The UI also looks disgusting and tacky

Not to mention they released a low tier console that was gimped by terrible design decisions

The controller feels really cheap to me. Even more so than the Xbox One version. The plastic feels like a cheap toy, the shoulder buttons feel weak and fragile, and the clacking d-pad is beyond annoying (especially as one who uses the d-pad for fighting games).

I loved the 360 controller but every subsequent Xbox controller has diminished in quality. The only thing I like about some of the Xbox Series controllers are the rubberized grips they put on them.

I know you gobble the pony dick every chance you get, but don't act like your opinions are somehow an objective standard. Piss off with your dumbass console-warrior bullshit. I like what I like. You're free to like what you like, but there is absolutely no reason for you to shit on what other people like. Your behavior is pathetic.

P.S. I specifically only listed the Xbox Series X. I didn't mention the Xbox Series S because I thought that was retarded.

I’m not shitting on anyone’s opinion, I’m only giving mine.

You’re free to think XSX is the best hardware ever released and I’m free to say “nah, I don’t agree”. There’s a reason their hardware strategy backfired on them

I’m no James Sawyer Ford fan but most of what he wrote is, in fact, objective reality. The Series X costs more to produce, it has a slower SSD bus, the controller (as even your original post admitted) had zero innovation since the Xbox One and X360 eras.

These are objective facts. The only subjective part of what he wrote is “worse performance” because that is dependent on development and performance between platforms vary on a game by game basis.

We haven't hit a new console generation yet. Even if MS is leaving traditional hardware behind, there is no reason for people to abandon their current hardware.

As per their 2023 financial report they’re still loosing money on every PS5, so that’s how they are achieving this. Incredible value for the money.

It's not millions behind. It's only 1M behind and will likely clear it with GTA6 release. It's selling slightly more than PS4 without it already.

The people who are Xbox fans did not lose their Xbox. Many will just not buy another one when it comes time to reup.

I think many current XSX owners are jaded against Sony though. Even those not actively engaged in the console war are often brand heads. Sony has been the enemy for so long, I would expect most of them to move to PC rather than give Playstation the satisfaction of a win.

Think of PC like the write in candidate. The option for people that hate everybody.

It's his stupid laugh emoji followed by that post that got me. He wasn't making objective facts that were relevant to the person he was responding to. The SSD being slower than the PlayStation 5's SSD is irrelevant. I didn't compare the Xbox Series X with the PlayStation 5. As you said, the performance piece is extremely subjective. And the controller innovation is irrelevant. The PlayStation controller gimmicks mean nothing to me. It's great if people like them, but I gave my own opinion to someone else (who also thinks Microsoft's hardware has been great), and Mr. Fanboy said, "Hold my beer..." I did edit my post because it wasn't necessary, but he is absolutely a clown.

They get the actually successful GAAS games by being the platform holder of choice for multiplats besides PCMR, why try to compete against the odds of catching lighting in a bottle?

Helldivers 2 did great and even that one is past it's peak and not recovering it anytime soon

Time is limited and they'll never beat the Fornites or CODs and the way things are going, they're incapable of getting the games out, even less get those games to catch on and be successful

Wasn't Sony stated they achieved hardware profitability by 2021?
Maybe they did and TSMC hit the fan. These guys love to increase the price of old nodes and submit the world in an escalation of prices and old technology at price of brand new. The thing is that in their last financial report they said that.
