Destiny 2 (PC/XB1/PS4, Sep 8) CG reveal trailer, pre-orders, gameplay debut May 18th

I'm not the one claiming that it did though.
And it did on all fronts.

Gave a basic story line.
The cabal empire has arrived.
Rekted the traveler and with it the Guardians powers
The Last city has fallen and the Guardians are scattered some dead.
We get introduced to the Cabal leader.
For returning players they give a actual lore reason as to why you lose everything between games.

We also get introduced to the vanguard leaders and how they act.
Zavala the calm, but inspiring leader.
Cayde the man of action. Wants to get shit done.

This is one part I didn't like in the trailer Ikora needed more lines. She's one of the best pvp Guardians. Just all around badass. Should've had more lines then her usual chiding Cayde for his antics.

Then were left with the Guardians now rallying around their leaders.

There was more personality in that trailer then anything in year one Destiny. They continued off with what I think are damn good story content from year 2 and beyond.

Gary looks damn cool. I hope to god that isn't a shield on his back that will change elements. Just part of his armor.
I want his helmet.
HKWME2E.jpg
It's a plethora of shields molded together into the shape of a hulking terror. Inside is Randal the Vandal.

You have a much lower bar than I do for what demonstrates a great story. They introduced the conflict, that's about it. Enumerating the conflicts in Destiny 2 doesn't mean a story looks great. Honestly, the thing that will demonstrate if Destiny has at least a relevant story is how it is weaved into the game. We can't really see that without them showing the structure of the gameplay.

It was a great cinematic video, but lets be honest, aside from the few story bits we got, we have NO IDEA how different this will be from D1. We know nothing, and frankly, we didn't need such a fan-centric reveal, the people playing this game were going to buy it regardless of this reveal, you need to show something that will attract those of us who left, or those you never got to begin with. I need to see gameplay, we know the game is in development, we need to know if you're avoiding the first game's problems, whether you improved other aspects, we need some in-game shit.

The gameplay comes in May. Jesus Christ, guys.

Move those goal posts!!

They should have waited until May for their "reveal" then.

Why? Lmao them releasing a CGI trailer now doesn't harm them in anyway. At all.

Quite the contrary, most people liked it. But let's say they didn't. There's still a gameplay dump coming. Soon, at that. So. Who. Cares.

Then we would have threads up and people complaining about how "It's leaked already! Why not to reveal it officially!?" GameStop etc. employees who leaked marketing material etc. forced Bungie's hand.

I never would've guess to understand more of the story you would need to play the game...also trailers are meant to introduce you into whatever's going on. Been a thing since forever and they did just that.

I doubt the gameplay reveal will have much in terms of story related spoilers. But Im excited to see how they weave it in as well. Hopefully more cutscenes, in-game grimoire, things to scan with the ghosts. Actual dialogue options with NPCs would be nice.

Showing that they have an actual story indicates it will be better.

All of the Destiny expansions and the original games showed similar things that enumerated the conflicts within it. How is it any different than the trailers for Corta, Oryx, or RoI?

I'm talking about how the story is weaved into the game. For example, are they going to continue to just stuff all of their lore in cards that you have to read on a website? Are they going to try and embed those details more into the game as you play it?

Man, Destiny threads are always such a mess. You got people who (understandably) feel burned by the first game and are critical of every detail about D2 that doesn't meet their expectations, fair or not. Then you got the people who loved Destiny and (understandably) get sick of people ripping it apart. And worst of all, you have the people who complain about how everyone else conducts themselves.

They why show anything? We didn't need this reveal, we want to see the game, not a teaser, for an announcement of the game we already knew was coming out. This 'reveal' does nothing for people who are no longer involved, or don't even care about the game at this point. It feels like they made this for the /r/destinythegame subreddit, and everyone else who is still playing this game.

Why would a reveal trailer show any of that?

Will see later down the road like I said. It's how it always goes. E3 will probably be pretty big for them. There's also the beta which will allow us to play a few missions.

I wonder if they're going to set up a faction divide. There are already neutral or enemy Guradian groups to the Tower. I wonder how the Iron Lords are holding up, and what the Concordat is up to. Destiny might be fun with the old Alliance Horde competition.

Maybe they have different priorities. Ikora and Cayde are speaking from within the city so maybe they're tasked with rebuilding/rescuing the survivors while Zavala is leading an assualt since he was speaking from the outside? Iunno. Don't see how a faction divide would come into play here

I never said that I wanted a reveal trailer to show that. You made the claim that this reveal trailer showed that Destiny 2 has a good story. I simply put forth what I think is needed for it to be apparent that Destiny 2 has at least a relevant story.

It's far more substantive in telegraphing concepts for the game.

Another thing you might want to consider is that Destiny fans, and I'm speaking in generalities, don't care as much about story for this game.

A lot of Destiny 1's problems arose because you had a bunch of people who knew how to make Halo and to make it well, tasked with making something else that hadn't yet been realized. There were a lot of growing pains and leaders have shifted and moved. At a certain point, the game takes on a life of its own, and the best cylinder-pushers in the world found themselves staring at square holes.

Pictures of Destiny 2 key art from GameStop backrooms start to spread around along with other info and suddenly we have teaser and reveal trailer out of nowhere. Hmmmm...

Coincidence or were their hand forced to push stuff out earlier than planned?

Edit: They don't even have digital distribution for PC version yet, big tell that something isn't right here

The trailer has been received well, is being shared everywhere and the game is being pre-ordered like crazy.

Jesus, what are you people arguing about at this point? You didn't care about or like the trailer personally so Bungie shouldn't have shown anything? And that despite the artwork and release date leaking last week, they should have waited another month and a half to reveal anything?

There's no point to this argument anymore. On one side we have a few people saying they didn't like it. On the other side we have the fact that the trailer was very successful in hyping the game and getting people to the store to pre-order.

What are we arguing about? Enough!

I hear from plenty of Destiny fans that Destiny has a great story and lore......hidden behind cards on a web site. And I recall people saying how great Bungie was at story telling with the Halo franchise, especially with Halo 1. And when Destiny 1 was coming out, the story was definitely a big part of the initial overall appeal. It is why the story was ripped apart so much.

I have feeling this might go in circles, because I don't disagree with you on what needs to be done. And hopefully they do it right. I listed what I wanted. If they don't have most of that I will be disappointed.

I'm saying I really like the plot that is Destiny 2. They've been building this up since TTK and it's nice to see it come into action. Compared to the last Destiny Badies no one has reached the Last City besides the Fallen at the Battle of Twilight Gap.

Good to see a villian actually rekt some shit.

When I worked at Gamestop, we got preorder promo for an unannounced game like this only a couple of days before the announcement. To be honest, I never get how Gamestop can't stop these leaks. It would be simple. The stuff comes in boxes that are completely covered in "DON'T OPEN THIS UNTIL DATE X!". All you'd have to do is randomly check stores that they haven't opened it. District managers already regularly randomly visit stores all of the time. Might as well do that too.

I liked the trailers, but I agree that gameplay details (even in CG form) would have been way better. I don't get why they couldn't start off with that, but oh well. I'm not convinced to buy Destiny 2 yet, but the game doesn't release till September, so I'm not exactly worried about it.

The problem here is that they're not showing anything that indicates what the actual game will play like. My issue is that they don't seem ready to show us the game, and considering the fact that it releases 6 months from now is pretty concerning. Don't get me wrong, I want to SEE stuff, what I don't want is a half-asser reveal with literally nothing in-game to see.
They throw a cg teaser at you to build hype for what was essentially another teaser? That's not going to hold my interest until may where we'll finally get footage.

Especially coming off the first game where so many people felt burned. Bungie does not have the goodwill afforded to studios like Naughty Dog or Rockstar. Not anymore. They've got something to prove now.

They should show some of it.

I wish the trailer would have shown gameplay too, but do you really think them showing it in May versus showing it now means that the game is having development issues? That's a big leap.

Really dont get why people are okey and overly excited after two cgi teasers that basicly showed nothing from th actual game.... But "PreOrdner Now111!" right?

I didnt even get the tone that the game will have a full story campaign. It just felt like yeah we have some funny characters this time around.

I should agree seeing as how much I don't like Destiny 1... But I just don't get the rush. Like yeah, they should have shown gameplay, but they didn't, and instead we have to wait till May. Which is fine with me. I wish my curiosity was more satiated, but I'm not losing sleep over it.

Me either, but this is the discussion thread for the trailer. Many people think that Bungie dropped the ball with this "reveal." This is the place on NeoGAF to talk about that.

It isn't "many." It's the minority. There is absolutely nothing to back up that this is a widespread opinion when the actual facts show the opposite.

There's no actual facts showing the opposite. Pre-order numbers don't mean shit, even I have the damn deluxe edition pre-ordered on PSN. This was still a shitty ass reveal.
