DF Direct: Crysis 4's uncertain future is a grim portend for the industry

Crysis is something of a tentpole game series for us at Digital Foundry, with a reputation for being an early adopter of graphics technologies that would later define entire generations of PC and console video games. That includes the likes of screen-space ambient occlusion, sub-surface scattering and ray-marched volumetric lighting, but you could write volumes about just how ground-breaking that first game was

I really want to see a Crysis 4 with all the ray-tracing & path-tracing effects. It would be a shame if they canceled the project. Maybe they could do a kickstarter?

I don't.

I buy Crysis Remastered Collection because of DF and got screw. The game is a mess, keep crashing no matter what, Crysis 1 and Crysis 3 get closing most of the time, not to mention some stupid decision like removing easter eggs from Crysis 3 for no reason? And DF not even mention that?
And this 'blind love' affect their credibility. I played Crysis 1 Remastered weeks ago and there is one part of the game that those stupid devs literally put a giand rock above a wood box with Scar ammunition and somehow no one mention or noted that? I noted because I have the Crysis 1 from Xbox 360 and is kinda insane seeing this shit.

If the quality of Crysis 4 is similar to those remasters, I would prefer they to not create.

Lol, such an Alex Battaglia headline.

Crysis has been around for 18 years and has one good game + expansion. 2 and 3 are trash and the only thing that made them known were their visuals.

This is 2025 and having a mid-tier budget won’t get you cutting head visuals anymore, so Crytek has to make a worthwhile single player game, something they haven’t done in over a decade and a half.

Nothing grim about it. Crytek hasn’t delivered over the past 16 years and doesn’t have the money to fund Crysis 4.

I agree. Since when has Crysis been the beacon of the industry? Despite my love for the original game, this isn’t 2007 anymore!

The series is dead, has been for a while now. Other than a few PC enthusiasts that still remember the first game (mostly as a benchmark) I don't think anybody really cares. It would have probably sucked anyway.

Nope, not only the visuals, I will take what naughty dog dev said about Crysis with a 91 Metacritic score and 86 for Crysis 2 , alongside my opinion and what John & Richard said about Crysis 3 over everything else. I liked them all. So are many people.

Is this Alex too?

Is John Alex too? because he loves the game

I said Crysis has one good game, the original and its expansion. 2 and 3 are trash and are only known for their visuals.

But Richard is not alex? and he loved Crysis 3.

It's okay if you didn't like 2 & 3, but many did like them.

Crysis 2 is 86 on MC.

crysis 2 and 3 are not bad games, but they don’t have anywhere near the mythos of the first. I think that’s the problem with them. If they were so good the franchise wouldn’t be dormant. They were decent shooters in an age of many many shooters, but they always lacked the openness of the 1st, and they didn’t stand out because of the tighter design imo. A bit ironic.

So much trashing crysis and crytek here, sad.

Crysis was an amazing game in both graphics , physics and destruction. From a time when pc exclusives actually exsited.
It also got me to get a high end gpu - nvidia 8800gtx series rocked!

The sequels sucked due to them making them for xbox 360. that is why.

The engine has been licensed and makes great games. Kingdom come deliverance 1 and 2 are made with it and the environments is off the charts in immersion.
I really hope they get their act togeather and make a new crysis using what was in their first game as the direction, and not crysis 2/3.

Don't confuse games that show off your hardware with good games. Look at Horizon Forbidden West.

Games to show off your hardware are for little kids.

As we get older we migrate back towards consoles, easy of use, and convenience.

A grim-portend for PC gaming maybe but consoles don't care about Crysis. Thanks to DF for giving us an update on PC gaming though. How are sales of new SP games being sold at full price going over on the PC? Perhaps that is why, no? I think KCD2 is doing well at least, to be fair.

Damn, didn't know it was in trouble. The games industry is hard. Hope it turns out well. We need a new real system melter for all this power.

Crytek hasn't been financially healthy ever and they are notorious for it, I'm surprised they even still exist

DF seems quite hysterical these days, their engagement numbers must be down. Go woke go broke

Unless crysis 4 melts PCs there isnt a need for it. Once it hit consoles it stopped being a showcase and more of a pretty generic shooter.

Got success with the first one, then sold out to consoles. Unless Crysis 4's primary platform is a 5090 or higher with a top end cpu and ssd it might as well not be made. When I was younger, I played the opening with the sunrise at like 8-10fps completely maxed out, just to see it. I was not disappointed at the time.

It's puzzling to me that so many in this thread appear to miss the main point. I mean, is it really a good thing if we had to rely solely on Epic and UE5 to drive things forward? Just asking.

The original Crysis was, and still is, absolutely terrific.
Crysis 2 is a clear step down, but having replayed it recently, it's a solid shooter that has some truly incredible moments.
Crysis 3 is another clear step down. I haven't replayed it in a long time, but I don't remember it fondly.

If Crysis 4 is closer to the original, or even the sequel, I'd probably be down. But if it continues the trajectory the series was clearly on, it's probably for the best it's been shelved.

The Crysis hate in this thread is sad. A PC melting Crysis 4 is what the world needs right now and I dont even have a gaming PC anymore. Just knowing it is being worked on is a comforting thought.

Grim portend for DF, not the industry. The reality is, Crysis was huge because of the "yeah, but can it run Crysis?" phenomenon. Very good game for the time, but, like ZehDon ZehDon said, it's been a sharp downward turn ever since.

Highly unlikely that a new Crysis sets the industry on fire, or does anything meaningful that a fixed Cyberpunk is not already doing. Unless they somehow show us that CryEngine has a way to get high end like performance out of a mid range spec'd PC without framegen, I don't see it making much of a dent in anything.

I doubt gen z would care for another single player first person shooter.

Crysis 4 has zero chance to make its money back if it would ever release.

Besides ,this franchise is dead. And i wouldnt care for it as the last 2 were boring as fuck.

Atomic heart 2 though, i would buy in a heart beat

Bah, these dumb Gen-Z kids wouldn't know a good game if it farted in their face.

After UDK the engine that I tinkered around with was CryEngine 3.
And some of the tech in it at the time was absolutely mind boggling compared to Unreal Engine 3.

How did Crytek fumble the bag with an Engine that was legit ahead of its time.

I was so close so close to "remastering" Skies of Arcadia in this engine.

P.S You can still download the engine for indie+ development.
Whether its worth it I dont know.
Im debating opening up my old Hard Drive and seeing if my Skies Remaster is still there and if it works with CryEngine 5

I dunno... I've seen a lot of images of burnt up GPU cables. Aren't PC's melting themselves just fine already without Crysis 4?
