DF - Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart PS5 Pro vs PS5 Image Quality Face-Off

This video is basically everything zoomed like 10 times and slowmo. No one would notice these things playing the game.

I really want to see some faceoff of 3rd party releases tbh
Yeah exactly. The PS4 Pro was a nice upgrade because before it there was NO choice between performance or quality, but now even on standard PS5 you have those options. Sure the Pro make things look a bit better. But the difference is sooooo little and the price of the Pro is double of the price of the PS5 normal so... Yeah really not worth it. For me the PS5 is more than enough.

I remember getting the PS4 Pro on day one (in fact 3 days before the release thanks to my shop) and really liking it (outside of the noise) but I canceled my plan of getting a PS5 Pro. Anyway if some people enjoy it that's good.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Am I trippin'? Because the images don't look the same even though they supposed to be the same area. I'm not talking about the quality of the reflections, I'm referring to the stuff in the image. The base PS5 looks like it has more stuff while being slightly of in terms of angle.

It's probably the coarser RT reflections that make it look 'different', or maybe the angles aren't 1 : 1.

I think the pro looks better with less pixel artifacts. Lighting too.

Also, the scene is in real time I believe so the water is different depending on when and where the drops hit. Hence the drops on the leather strap on the Pro but not on the base, as well as the objects in the background moving around to reflect in his eyes.
Nah, the wet fur is definitely wrong here.

Here it is on PC too.

Yes now we have a choice, but most of the performance modes looks like shit, im talking about 3rd party games here. The Pro will shine there the most. Getting rid of the terrible FSR, making the image quality a lot better while using higher quality settings too and probably more stable fps. These sony games are not a good representation of the Pro at all

Yeah. I,too thought that is weird DLSS wasn't compared to PSSR since the DF crew compare DLSS to PSSR from a trailer vs having seen Sony's form of Uber resolution in person.

I just think we learn more from PS5 Pro Performance mode running at 60 and say a 4070 running DLSS as similar resolutions at 60 fps and seeing the what difference in image quality is than comparing the image quality of the PS5 Pro running performance mode at 60 vs performance RT on the PS5 running at 40 and Fidelity running at 30.

If the goal is 60, why are we still focusing so much on the lower frame rate modes.

If there was a 30 fps mode on PS5 Pro say a Pro Fidelity mode, sure compare that to Fidelity mode on PS5.

Rift Apart was such a weird entry. It came out early on the PS5 and was a PS5 exclusive. Then every other major game that came out after that was also released on the PS4, negating any reason to buy a PS5 outside of load times. It's not until the last year or so that PS5 games are truly exclusive again. But Rift Apart was a rarity on release.

Clearly, many people didn't feel that way as folks bought PS5s in droves.

Besides, that isn't totally true anyway, as there is no PS4 version of Demons Souls (this was a big seller of the PS5 to PS4 fans in the beginning), FFXVI, Last of Us Part I, Returnal, nor Spider-Man 2 (another major system seller). And that's before we get to this year where there is Astrobot, Helldivers II, FFVII: Rebirth, Rise of the Ronin, and Stellar Blade. Plenty of reasons to upgrade.

The fur never looks like that outside of rain even in performance mode though.

Very similar look here. Maybe it's like DeepEnigma DeepEnigma said and there are levels of wetness.
Even in this shot the pro seem to be less detail/softer with higher internal res. Geez, did they crank all the sharpness way down or none at all? Spiderman 2 is the opposite though. It look substantially sharper.

Here go to 2:20.

I am watching this full screen on my TV and this is not a good example for the pro at all in my opinion. There's a few little benefits, but also some clear flaws with delayed raytracing animation etc.

This is not a good show of the PS5 pro imo. seriously, seriously zoomed in shots and not a huge difference.

Agreed. Sony's first party stuff looks good on the base model, and the old adage about it being harder to get from good to great than poor to good is on full display here. Games that look poor on the base model (FF like they show here) are the ones that really show a difference.

Console is much better in RT yet they kept simple settings...

Maybe better BVH requires more CPU power?
It can if they decide to build on the CPU, which is something Ubisoft did partially for Frontiers of Pandora on consoles. Rift Apart has a lot of CPU headroom to spare, so it would make sense.

I think like 90% of devs are doing it on CPU.

Maybe?

I told you guys this would happen without a big CPU upgrade. Especially in RT games.
Wouldn't use this game as proof since they're not even using the better GPU for something as basic as improving the graphics.

Dude…this is literally a pssr only patch…

They could do much more, they even have assets and higher quality settings done by nixxes for pc port. This game was featured in pro presentation.

Sony is not really that much focused on their own console, the most impressive things shown on pro are third party games.

So this can't do fidelity at 60 fps? Rather performance RT upscaled ?
I swear I can't see the difference on my TV base ps5 version looks sharper.
So I'm paying 800 dollars for a muted softr looking image ?

When playing it will be very easy to spot the difference for me, but I won't be replaying this game I already beat.

Horizon? I don't know, they are changing some stuff but I'm not even sure if changes are for the better (based on DF video) + no PSSR.

Lol Horizon now has best IQ of any Sony game because of the Pro not to mention settings are better than fidelity mode.

That's because it's not really meant for the graphics. The whole point of the console is just to get more FPS in quality mode which was never a massive difference over performance as is (in most games). Unfortunately trying to show people the increase in FPS isn't as sexy in a DF video.

As far as 3rd party they have video on FF7 Rebirth and they make it clear that he was even more impressed than he was initially. If you're even slightly interested just go buy it at best buy and test it yourself. If you aren't impressed return it. Trying to gauge this sort of stuff on youtube is a waste of time especially when it's very easy to just do it yourself.

At 3X zoom no less

I for one sit kind of close to my 32" monitor though so I might see it

Yea I have a 48" tv and I sit very close to it.

Who the fuck is gonna see that sitting 10 feet away from their flat screen tv
Well..Digital Foundry for starters.

I mean...
The biggest improvement on Pro comes down to the way the final image resolves, with PSSR upscaling taking Ratchet from circa 1584p to a full 4K final image versus a 1440p internal res on the base machine (Both modes make use of DRS and use lower-res post processing too). On fine elements of geometry, the difference can be stark, with the Pro resolving cleaner lines with more detail thanks to that higher internal resolution and better upscaling tech.
The performance RT mode features a substantial pass of post-process sharpening to give a greater perception of detail across the image. On PS5 Pro, there's better overall detail, but without the artificial-looking edge ringing and additional breakup often associated with sharpening.
RT reflections also resolve much more cleanly on the Pro console. These reflections had a grainy appearance on the base console, with checkerboard-like patterns sometimes visible in reflective detail. PS5 Pro can look slightly softer than the base console here, but the RT resolve is more stable. There's also much less aliasing in areas like bevelled edges on glossy surfaces and on the borders of glossy materials in general. That results in a more coherent and realistic image, especially with changes to noise and dithering patterns that feed into the RT reflections on PS5 Pro.
Vegetation also generally looks better on Pro, with more foliage detail at range and more minor changes up close. The higher-frequency patterns of detail in the foliage before didn't interact all that favourably with image sharpening, so it tended to have a bit of an oversharpened image on the base machine relative to Pro. Some distant trees do look a bit less stable, with noise that we don't get with IGTI on the base model. I also noticed that some grass with temporal artefacts, perhaps as visual evidence of a kind of jittering process.
When it comes to movement, the results are mostly positive. Complex animation, like the wrench-swinging animation on Ratchet, resolves with much less aliasing on Pro and produces a clean and more quickly coherent result in comparison. Getting this to look good is a pretty tall order, given the fast animation with complex movement and constant occlusion and disocclusion, but PSSR is delivering a satisfying result.

I was reading this thread back a few minutes ago.

It's was a 300p (and a few fps) difference and it was game changing.

Some of the same people here saying that they can't see the difference. Lol.

The main purpose of this video felt like it was to show how clean PSSR is which is important as it's pretty much AMDs AI FSR coming to PC.
