I am a dumbass.

So I purchased a new 8GB card for my 3DS, and I figured "I need to format this before using it". I backed up my previous 2GB on my computer, then put my new card in the 3DS... and hit the "Format System" option, thinking that this would make the new card usable for the 3DS. So I do that, then put it back in my computer so I can drag all of my old files on it, however in the middle of transfering files, I am an idiot and remove the card thinking it's all done transferring files, when it wasn't.

Now my SD card won't show up on the computer, my new 8GB or my old 2GB. When I put either card in my system, it's obviously back to factory settings. Obviously, I shouldn't have been a dumbass and hit SYSTEM FORMAT... that was stupid.


... So here's my question, did I just screw over myself? I had MK7 and M3DLand saved on the card. Am I going to be able to redownload them to the system? I also had like $35 on the eShop, is my 3DS going to be able to reaccess that cash, or was all that info erased when I hit fucking SYSTEM FORMAT?

I feel so fucking stupid. Please tell me I didn't just lose my eShop account and downloaded games! It seems I already lost my Playlog, and I'm pretty fucking pissed about that.

You hit Format System, so everything is wiped out from scratch. I'd say Call Nintendo's customer service and see if they can help.

EDIT: Well it seem that I just pulled up the eShop and I still have my cash that I had when I left it, and it seems that it would let me redownload my two games. But, it just gave me an error when I tried to redownload. I don't know if that's on my end or Nitnendo's service at the moment.

If they're still visible in your download history then you dodged a bullet. Since your money and purchases are still visible on the eshop you should probably just call up Nintendo and send your system in to have it fixed up.

When I was doing a system transfer from 3DS to XL it took ages. And at the end the XL said there was a communication error and was shutting down.
I thought I lost my games, and one of my 5 available system transfers. I was so pissed until the restart showed that everything was ok.
What a scare though.

I think as long as you didn't delete the eShop account you SHOULD be able to redownload the games. Make sure your SD card shows enough free blocks first in Data Management.

Contrary to what many here think the 3DS eShop actually has an account, these accounts are unique per hardware serial number and they are stored on their servers so no a format will not delete your purchases or eShop money. Only way to do that is to delete the eShop account which you can only do inside the eShop.

You can BBQ a 3DS and your eShop account will still be on their servers just fine. Only problem would be getting them to move that account onto a different hardware cause they dont let you do that unless both systems (your new 3DS and your old one) are intact.

That's right, you do have to actually delete the eShop account.

Since you said you're getting an error when you try to re-download the games, maybe it's an issue with the SD card since you had pulled it out while it was in use.

AFAIK the format option doesn't erase the eShop account. You need to do it inside the eShop. Try erasing the SD card (in a PC, this time) then putit back on the 3DS and try to download anything.
