Digital Foundry: Unreal Engine 5: What Can Game Developers Learn From Hellblade 2?

Darn, you two almost got this thread to talk about the topic, but alas, GAF will GAF...

The hypocrisy is what gets me. No one could look past CRAIG when MS was showcasing Series X, no one cared about the content, fun factor or the gameplay it was all about Craig. WAAAAA, where's the so called 12 TF!?

Now we have a visual masterpiece, the best graphics we've seen to date, but suddenly the goals have shifted.

Wasn't Halo Infinite Gaf's Game of the Year though? But I think Bloodborne won that title too, so I guess Gaf has failed at least twice.

I've never seen a game hurt a community so hard. Hellblade 2 hit different! The insecurity is at God levels at this point. Digital Foundry is about "GRAPHICS".
It's usually the same insufferable usual suspects. I have no idea why so-called "enthusiasts" would want a dedicated gaming forum to be like this. But then of course the world is known to be full of conundrums.

High on my wishlist is a gaf feature which doesn't block news threads made by people in my ignore list.

I guess I wonder how the first game was so well received.

It's a good short-form narrative interactive experience.

It's just not a type of game that you would like.
That's fine, takes all kinds...

The weird thing about Hellblade 2 is that it got positioned inadvertently a mass-market big game, despite both the original and the sequel being very specific in appeal. HB still needs a big audience since it is expensive to make, and it's reach has been extraordinary in connecting unexpected types of players to its immersive qualities, but too many gamers are picking it up going, "Great, a new game with hot graphics and a chick with a sword, I'm into this... Hey, what the fuck, why isn't this game doing what i wanted?"

(I don't know if Hellblade is for me either, I'm not cashing you out about it, just saying that good doesn't always mean universally good. )

You too can score that Edge 4/10 with these simple tricks! Seriously, they use UE5 for the Starwars TV series so technically by their standards isn't that the best looking video game.

It looks like most of the game is taking place in areas with little vegetation, is that really how it is or does the released footage just make it seem that way?
Because Nanite and foliage don't mesh together, and epic still haven't solved this problem.

One thing that hasn't shifted though is the constant crying about the Xbox tax® and the persecution complex.

the combat is Visceral as fuck!
Yeah I already knew at the Thorgestr fight that this would be one special playthrough. Absolutely loved the fights! The ones in the dark cave was the peak, they were incredibly intense and brutal, and visceral as you say. I want a whole game with that, just enemy after enemy in varied environments, could be a modern dark beat'em up. 👌

Is it me or really Console optimization has been gone to the dustbin in this generation. Really, a Gimp card like Rtx 4060 worse than RTX 3060 is competing with Xbox Series X on it's exclusive title is a serious concern.

It simply means that there is no fine wine left in the console or hidden performance. You can really judge the hardware performance from the start of the launch not like PS4 or PS3, where it got better in middle generation.
There is no hidden performance anymore, these consoles get maxed out on day one. Same for PS4/Xone, you had Killzone/Ryse/FM5/Driveclub/The Order maxing out the systems on day one or first year and things didn't really progress from that.

The "press forward only" parts were not???
As I said, I knew what I was getting into, they were pretty neutral to me, the atmosphere, music, narrative, etc. Made everything pretty enjoyable, it was a short game so it's easy for me to judge the whole package.

I mean, there's people saying TLOU or RDR2 are "amazing" even tho those games have long walky talky sections and they bore me for that, many of those complain about the same in HB2 for some reason, let's say we all forgive things we normally don't like if the the other elements click... It just happened that HB2 didn't click with them.
