DKC Returns HD. Nintendo and the tools who support it should be ashamed

Predicts the worst decade for Sony starting 2022
I do not mind if an older game is remade and makes dramatic improvement to bring a beloved game to the modern times.

It is different when a developer makes a lazy port, make very little change, then have the nerve to charge full price.

Nintendo just did that but it's even worse. This game was released on the WiiU, re-released again on the switch, then re-released again on the same platform a 3rd time.

Here is the kicker, it's almost the exact same game on all 3 releases. I have a switch oled with the original switch DKC returns released and my buddy also with a switch oled has the 2nd switch release of this game. It's almost the exact same and visually damn near impossible to tell the difference. One little minor mode was added but they have the nerve to charge tog same as a new release.

This bullshit trend pisses me off. People supporting this shit hurts us all. Lazy ports, make almost zero change, and charge full price. This gives developers 0 reason to innovate. This is a gravy train that I hope not to see continue.

Its bad enough we get so few game releases these days but makes the problem far worse when they can just make lazy ports.

I agree ...they did it with Skyward Sword and Luigis Mansion 2 ...both games had very little extras added to them

At least Pikmin 3 and the 2d Kirby game had new modes added

Nintendo is a greedy ass company

The OP isn't accurate.

This game came out on the Wii, then got a 3DS version with extra content. This is a HD remaster of the 3DS version.

What you played on the Switch already was DK Tropical Freeze, the sequel.

Doesn't mean this is worth full price though.

Edit: Wait I'm confused. You said your buddy played this, but it doesn't come out until next month....

Donkey Kong Country Returns was never released on the Wii U nor the Switch (a 3DS port was released).

1. It was and still is an amazing game.
2. This will likely be the best way to play said amazing game (HD and no waggle).

If the price is too high you can always wait the extra 24 months for a Nintendo sale I'm sure it'll have the usual 33% eShop sale discount.

Buying this again is insanity , there are better way to spend our money. It's a good game for those who never played before though. Price is steep af

Most of these nintendo hd remasters don't even look like remasters lol. They're the laziest and most souless cash grabs i've ever seen but since it's nintendo alot of people make excuses for this crap. Skyward sword 'hd remaster' is another example of a blatant cash grab with almost 0 done to it in terms of improvements lol. I agree with OP in that it's a joke how nintendo gets away with this stuff.

Is this your first Nintendo purchase or something? They’re the literal worst for lazy full priced ports, they’ve done it pretty much every generation since the Gamecube lol

$60 for a low-end port of a Wii game, that was already rereleased once, 11 years ago? Completely ridiculous.

$39.99 is a fair price. Normally I defend Nintendo’s pricing, but not afraid to call out the bullshit when it’s shit like this.

I didn't get this, Nintendo themselves should learn from Monolith Soft. They put much more work towards re-release compare to Nintendo themselves.

Skyward Sword is relatively modern, though. And had never been rereleased before. And a lot of work was done to make it work with the Joy Con. And Luigi’s Mansion 2 was remade with HD graphics and had to have brand new assets. That’s a lot of work, plain and simple.

DKCR HD is in a class all its own. It’s already been rereleased once, back in 2013. For $40. And this port has barely had any work done, and it’s been pointed out that in fact it may even have visual cutbacks from what was in the Wii version, which is ridiculous. I flatly think $60 is insane in this case.

Bro you better not buy a Switch 2 then.

Well, it was essentially a Switch game on the Wii. It didn't use the game pad at all (just completely blank). I'm sure they hardly even needed to change any code to make a native Switch version, since the Switch programming API is based on the Wii U code.

Thought you were talking about Tropical Freeze. DKC Returns was on the original Wii. It isn't even on the Switch yet? Says Jan 2025 release.

I see the other replies now. OP is apparently on drugs, or this is an AI generated post.

The original featured heavy use of motion controls that you couldn't turn off.

You're probably thinking of Tropical Freeze, which was all sticks and buttons and no second screen gimmicks on Wii U.

Seems OP isn't playing on the Nintendo Switch in the first place if he's wrong on so many things.

Guessing he's a troll?

I'm ok with resolution and minimum 60 fps, but this port is looking bad, even worse than og version, looks like a pretty early version that shouldn't be shown to the public yet, I hope that's the case.

I mostly prefer those simple ports BTW, maybe with some QOL improvements, the reason is that visual improvements aren't always actual improvements, cases like Demon Souls Remake and WWHD come to mind.

Love or hate them, agree or disagree with the price. You need to admire Nintendo's protection of their IP's by making sure they have artifical value regardless of the game quality. It's the complete opposite of the Ubi-soft or AAA market pricing strategy. That old 80's Nintendo is still there, bubbling under the surface.

It's not a swan song release, or pinacle of Switch development, it's filler because it's the home stretch now. You don't have to buy it, but for people who never played any version, it may be a worthwhile experience. It's like people around here never experience the last 2 years of the Wii.

As always vote with your wallet if your that offended by the game, half assed effort and price. Send them a message, will the game break 1M? let's see.

Guys we old. We used to tell the difference between Game Boy screens on sight but now confuse two fully realized DK titles from different gens as the same game.

Wii didn't have a gamepad btw that was its successor Wii U. Even consoles are running together! It's good to review history on occasion, we can cover more when you guys are done passing out Werther's Originals. Take your time, I'm still going crazy looking for my copy of Yoshi for Game Gear...I just had it I swear, bet that nurse TOOK it :messenger_unamused:

If Nintendo wants to resell this game for a new generation at a higher price, so the eF what? If it’s not worth it to you leave it at the store. I don’t need to buy every full priced re-release Nintendo does and I don’t. However if those full priced ports keep the employees payed and the company over all making the brand new games that I eagerly anticipate, I figure it’s an over all net positive to me.

With all that said… My original is mounted on my wall and I hate hooking up my Wii to my modern TV. I’ll gladly get this game again to revisit it with my children who weren’t even born during the Wii era.

Nintendo usually gets a pass from a lot of people because of childhood nostalgia, but they have been greedy lazy whores for a long long time.

I don't know the release of this Donkey Kong game, but they did something similar with Mario Kart 8 (I think it was 8). It was a WiiU game that got ported, and then they even added dlc for the port of old levels.

It's pointless even trying to care though, because the Nintendo fanboys will jump on companies for doing similar and even less, but will go to war with their anime pillows to defend them. There is no getting through to them.

MK8 sold more copies than there were Wii U ever produced. There would be an army complaining if they didn't port it, now they just have to worry about 1 guy.

MK8 DLC was some of the first DLC Nintendo ever had and was heralded as the right way to do DLC. Glad to have the input of the guy who can't even remember for sure what game it was though lol.

Can I tell you where to ship my anime pillow?

When we have Mario Kart 8 Deluxe selling more than 65 million copies, it's obvious that Nintendo was absolutely right when they thought the game had a lot more potential than what the Wii U could extract from it.

How many games sell this much on a single platform? Exactly.

Some people treat everything as trash. "They're porting this fucking Wii U game? This shit should be bundled with the console for free; no one should pay for it!"

You can call Nintendo "greedy, lazy whores," but what's actually happening is a company giving credit to the effort of its developers and valuing their work.

It's easy to dismiss things like this when you haven't built anything that required 4, 5, or 6 years of hard work (and a lot of creativity!) from you. Nintendo's leadership knows the value of their work and IP, and they will rightfully explore it in ways they see fit.

Other than that, I always see takes like this as very hypocritical. You can talk in a passionate way all you want when you don't have skin in the game (I mean, not the skins you're thinking of, lol), but once you're the person in charge and you're informed that "we can potentially sell 40 million more units of game XYZ if we port it to our next console," I'm pretty sure of what everyone would decide. TBQH, I believe most people who are always saying "greedy rats!" would act much worse if they were in the same leadership position.

Some people on gaf just cant bear that nintendo hasn't disappeared and are doing well which leads to unhinged threads like this it's like they want to be angry at nintendo but they needed to create a shallow shell thread to do it with the weakest flimsiest of excuses lol can't even get the games right.

Man FUCK nintendo, sick of their "insert lame reason" and their greedy policies.

Couldn't help but add about the MK8 DLC. What exactly was bad about it being old levels? 8 already had a healthy amount of its own. The DLC maps are taken from all past games as far back as SNES or GBA, remade in the modern engine in 60FPS playable on your big TV, and in a bargain package. It's not like they just copy/pasted a map from last gen and charged for it lol. This is literally the first time in my life I saw someone shitting on it, EVERYONE liked what they did with both the MK8 game and DLCs.

Either Nostalgia or… they make incredible games only rivalled by Rockstar, Naughty Dog and FromSoft.

A ton of Nintendo games are also still stuck in standard definition so of course the first HD re release is going to be full price or close to it.

$70 rereleases of late gen 2013 PS3 then PS4 remasters are fine though apparently.

When everyone who bought NES at retail is dead, Nintendo will STILL be unfairly killing it by exploiting nostalgia! At some point, it'll be nostalgia for the bad games people just bought over 90s nostalgia. They can't keep getting away with it!!
