Man, completed that first secret encounter in stage 6 and died as soon as it popped that I beat it.

Thank fuck it saved my progress and I don’t have to do it over 🥳

Motion blur is absolutely incredible in doom 2016 and 2020. Leave it on! Just max out everything. Dof and CA are not bad. I think dof only activates in cutscenes etc.
I've did some testing of 60fps doom with Motion blur vs 240hz doom on 240hz monitor.
The 60hz with motion blur (to my eye) looked EXACTLY like 240hz without motion blur. My explanation is, at 240fps/hz, there are enough frames to fill all the holes in your brain, while at 60hz, the motion blur helps cheating through it.

Quick tip...
they become laughably easy when you do them on cheat codes with infinite ammo BFG ;) I know it's not fair but the game blocks only Slayer Gates from using cheats.

i will give it a try, i usually love a sharp image in every occasion so these thing are first i disable in every game.

One of the complaints of the 2016 game was how it failed to introduce new elements and enemies after about 30-40% through.

Has this game done a better job of that? Not that it will keep me from ripping or tearing...

Also, have they finally fixed the horrible sound mixing? That was a major problem for me in the past game.

But far more forgiving. Doom has always been dick pinching hard on UV.

I gotta be honest, the original Doom is brutally fucking hard on Ultra Violence. At least it's quick, i'm already on the second episode.

It's fun as Hell tho, i can't believe how much id Software nailed the formula over 20 years ago. It's about as 'ageless' as you can get, tho it would have been harder to get into without the immense modding community. The original resolution was 320x200 IIRC. I actually tried that to play it purely vanilla .. and it's literally almost impossible to see anything at that resolution. So i stuck with a 99% vanilla playthrough, the only things i altered is adding the Smooth Doom mod and increasing the resolution at my native monitor.

holy shit why doom2016 on pc is 70gb? 😆

Yeah, that hit me like a brick as well, i wanna replay Doom 2016 as well. My SSD is quite small (250GB), and i'll have to uninstall Doom Eternal to do so.

I'm on a genuine Doom roll. They're all way to good not to replay to have a fresh perspective on the entire series.

I'll have to contemplate what version of Doom 3 to install as well.

Slayer Challenges are absolutely bonkers. You enter a totally focused mental state.

I think Im maybe 40% through the game and still no Archvile yet. I know that son of a bitch is coming...

For me, the 2 or 3 interesting gunfights in the first 3 levels did not outweigh the overused platforming, shoehorned upgrading/leveling/XP nonsense, unnecessary cutscenes, directionless storytelling, terrible UI and general arcadeyness of it all. I am a huge fan of the original Doom games and the 2016 remake, but this is missing the point for me. I might revisit it when it's $20, but this isn't what I wanted out of this game at all.
I'm with you on the platforming, it's awful, just awful. Clunky bullshit.

It ruins the flow and the game in general for me.

I think the Original has the best design in the series still. Romero had the best ideas in that regard. I suggest giving Sigil a shot.

And yes a modern resolution is a must haha. Theres actually a barbones version of each game hidden in Eternal if you really want to play them in their original form lol.

Also Doom 2016 is that large because of all the DLC they added for free and force you to download.

i don't have too many games installed right now so it's not really a problem, also 70gb are around 1 hour of download.
i'm more surprised because usually open world games or games with a lot of cutscene are the heavy games, i was expecting like 30 gb tops for this one.

any advice about choosing open gl or vulkan in the options? the demo with open gl was buttery smooth at 4k60ultra but maybe vulkan is even better?

Depends what card and CPU you are running.

Looks like i'm done.

Aside from the game being way beyond my capabilities, i dislike how all these different skill trees and weapon upgrades seem tied to side content, making it hard to even grind up.

I saw a post on the "other" site, and that dude compared this to a 90s FMV game, what he means is that you have to do everything in a super specific way or you are dead, zero margin for error, and some people will like that, but i don't.

This game seems to be way, way harder than Doom 2016 the story was also quite disappointing. last boss is a chore and everything about narration is pure embarrassment. Lastly, the graphics are some of the best I have seen in a game.
It's definitely harder, and I think that may be the issue some folks may have. The AI can be pretty relentless, on top of that, some of the levels get a bit too claustrophobic with that many enemies rushing you. So it's hard not to panic in some instances. The few times I died I was either surrounded or forced into a corner where I couldn't dash out or move to give me clearance. Then you have the skill trees and the combat flow that I think some people may just ignore or not feel comfortable with. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I admit I had a number of times where I was panicking and pressed one button instead of another. But it all came together eventually.

I mean, it's DOOM, so story was never really a huge selling point. I thought they did a good job with 2016 and of continuing that vibe, while also opening up more of the universe.

Last boss was perfect IMO, I always wondered how that kind of fight would even be remotely possible with 2016's mechanics and beyond. They did it, and better than I expected. A bit choring sure, but it provided a challenge that I was hoping for.

I agree! The graphics are absolutely insane. I can't even remember the amount of times I just stopped and took the scenery in. It was pretty insane.

idTech is absolutely ridiculous. My system isn't dated by any means. But I couldn't stop feeling impressed by not only the visuals, but the amount of chaos going on, and the FPS never dipped once. Not to mention those SSD load times are 👌🏻.

Well my computer stopped working so now I can’t play this game and I’m getting shit from jackasses in gaming for complaining about it. So this is already turning into a shitty day for me.

Probably return it on Steam and get it for PS 4 Pro.

Doom Eternal has real time cutscenes, only thing that would take up more space is the audio since it's all rendered in real time. Doom 2016 has snapmap, multiplayer, campaign and some MP DLC.

Vulkan was better for me and allowed me to keep 144fps most if not all the time. I had weird stutters from time to time with open gl (gtx 1080).

Ugh man, that sucks. Sorry to hear that. 😟

I was getting micro stutters on my 1080 too, it was driving me crazy! I disabled a setting and everything was fine after that. I'll check and see what it was when I hop back in.

I think I had the same issue on 2016. 🤔

My modem died last night and fortunately Xfinity sent a guy out this morning to replace it. All good now.

But to those wondering: YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE ONLINE TO PLAY

It’ll attempt to log into Bethesda.net but then just goes right to the title screen and away you go.

2070super and 8600k.
At that point I believe Open GL is the better option as its slightly more stable. People have reported a couple of weird crashes related to vulkan. But Vulkan mainly saw a huge gain on lower end CPUS and AMD GPUS.

Regarding PS4 load times, I really like how fast it is to resume playing when you die.

On Doom 2016 I would always be scared of dying because it meant I had to wait a solid minute plus.

Some things irk me... Spoiling a new enemy encounter with a tutorial prompt is really dumb, had to turn those off. Sound mixing is awful either on headphones or 5.1.
And while I echo the sentiments that it's mostly more micro-managing cooldown bars more than a shooter, I'm sure it will all come together later on like a souls game (heh), for now I will turn down the difficulty and play more around the very extensive options.

This game has hard crashed my X1X 6 times so far. Always within 1 second of coming out of the menu after spending points. No spinning fans like you hear when playing the game proper. Anyone else suffering this issue?

When it does play it looks gorgeous (i much prefer the colourful and arcady graphics) and performs without a hitch.

But it's not as much fun as 2016.

Theyve upped the demon count considerably, and its mad as hell, but I'm always running out of ammo and having to look for a chainsaw kill, often getting hammered at the same time. I'm afraid to admit I had to turn this down to its easiest setting to get any sort of enjoyment out of it. Must be getting old.

I got Doom64 at the same time, and would say I've been enjoying that more.

Oh stop.

I was half joking. I have countless other posts here that go into detail why the "get good" mentality is actually warranted.

I wont lose any sleep over someone not liking Doom Eternal friend.

I wasn't aware you could them off. They really should make that clear and have it be something you toggle right at the beginning.

I didnt have any sound mixing issues. What platform are you on?

Most of GAF will dismiss your comment as flippant, but they shouldn't. This game really does require more and different skills from the player, compared to 2016. And a lot of people who loved that game will be put off by Eternal at first. And it may never click with some of them.

This is low key like learning a new language. While you're struggling with it, it's not as fun as speaking your first language that you're already fluent in. But then once you get it down, once you have that muscle memory for how the flow works, then everything falls into place and new experiences are offered to you. I think that's what is going on here. Eternal is very different from 2016, and it just requires a lot more from the player. It's going to take us time to get into that new flow, and some people never will (even if they manage to finish it, ironically).

For those of us who are picking it up well early on, the extra challenge is fun and rewarding and way better than anything 2016 could have offered. For others it is just frustrating. Neither side is "wrong" objectively, it's just some people are not given to enjoy what Eternal asks of the player. And that does mean Eternal is somewhat more hardcore and niche than 2016 was. And that's okay. Maybe they'll never "git gud" enough to speak it fluently, and they'll hate it. And it's their loss, but such is life.

100% agree. For me at least, Doom Eternal is a much better game than Doom 2016, because it constantly makes you think about what to use with what enemy. In Doom 2016 you could used the same weapon the entire game, it was repetitive unlike Eternal which force you to use your whole arsenal, and the dash ability is awesome and a very much welcome addition for facing greater challenges. Since they optimize the engine theres also much more variety in the enviroments, unlike Doom 2016 which was a bit bland.

Yep, it became the same after a while, without introducing nothing new aftermid-game.
