So I was asked to help make a YouTube video about woke stuff in gaming and I thought I'd turn to the collective wisdom of GAF!

What were the dumbest, most idiotic / laughable woke stuff in gaming that should definitely be included?

What were the most idiotic articles in the gaming media defending the woke stuff, or mentioning that something wasn't woke enough, or demanding more diversity and stuff?

And also what were the main events, major plot points that shouldn't be missed in a video like this? I'm thinking about GamerGate-like stuff.

funnily enough, I just had flashbacks recently to the BFV reveal and how it was almost a progenitor to how modern games are handled today, big emphasis on "Modern audience" elements along with a dose of blaming and chastising the actual audience and community.

One of the first big AAA highly anticipated games to really put its foot in it's mouth and stumble.

Lately a lot of games have been attacked by extremists for the wrong reasons which is why the industry will never take them serious. For once Id like to see a middle ground, as we had a lot of great games with diverse characters before.

Anyway, I can't find the article because i think Eurogamer deleted it, but they ran a piece when Kingdom Come came out where they had a "history expert" explain how the developers were wrong for making their game have all white characters.

Turned out the guy wasn't even a history scholar and was talking out of his ass. Even their own members were calling them out in the comments.

not that you are wrong, these games are diverse and are good to great.

i'd argue that "Diversity" isn't even a real thing, it's the terminology used by the hivemind to create agendas and forced perspectives. I'd rather a game have 0 diversity but tell a unique and interesting story rather than have a checklist of different races, genders, ethnicities etc.

I play and love the Yakuza games because they are inherently authentic to the culture and people who make the games. If yakuza games had a checklist of things to tick off like a generic white guy, Latino guy, black guy etc it would be worse for it.

Things just need to be authentic and come from an authentic place. Mafia 2 being mostly Italian white males in NY is totally acceptable and was a fantastic game just as Persona being heavily Japanese and focusing on Cities/Towns in Jpn is acceptable too. Uncharted the lost legacy was a fantastic time and it starred "diverse women", but was done so from a place of authenticity where the devs cared about what they were doing rather than just throwing in random female characters in a non western country to get the brownie points from journos.

The banter of people in the street is all about "the message" as well to the point where some of the things said are so proposterous you wouldn't want your kid to hear them.

I loved Spider-Man 2's gameplay and the overall story, but the amount of check arks the shoehorned in really killed it for me even recommending it. Miles has to set someone up on a date while Venom is on the loose? I have to become a deaf girl? I have to help a secret organization of BIPOCs (I had to Google what this was at the time)? What is this game doing slowing me down to preach to me about dumb junk? I just want to be Spider-Man and beat crap up.

Yes, Spider-man 2’s writing seemly being a California university student’s wet dream. Within the first two hours, we have Harry going on about his diverse board leading to success, criminals should be given second chances, guns = bad, and apparently the language Miles speaks is some gender-neutral version (LatinX).
