Nintendo is back with a vengeance with the top 10 being all Switch games.

Maybe that's just me, but I expected a better hold for TOTK. Not that this hold is bad, a 78% drop is probably a normal drop, but given all the hype and the scores, I guess I expected the drop to be between 60% to 70%. But then again, probably it was all this hype that made it more frontloaded than it would normally be.

And lol at BOTW being up WOW. I mean, it makes sense. But it just goes to show how big its legs are.

Switch hardware numbers are actually quite damn impressive. A few months ago I would have expected its average to be around 50k, and yet its been around 80k for almost 2 months now, hasn't it? Mighty impressive just how popular the Switch ended up being. Just goes to show that all it takes to have a successful console is to think outside the Box, and alot of great games.

PS5 did this week what I would have expected the Switch to do this week: Slightly down WOW, but not a drop too sharp. Software continues to be non existant, but at least the hardware manages to hang on.

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
PS5 hardware is doing very well. I suppose it's probably up from here, in general.

Software is more important though. I would love to say the situation is normal, and that there is nothing to see. But that would be a lie..

Good hold for Zelda and BotW climbing the charts again. lol amazing.
Part of that will be TOTK but also that amazingly good japan only release of BOTW that has all the expansion DLC built into the cart as nintendo finally did another print run so the price has returned to normal instead of 3 figures it was getting to at one point.

Some observations:
  • Switch being up is surprising, looks like the lack of ZOLED last week had an impact
  • PS5 2023 has already outsold PS5 2022. I think we can safely say it's baseline in Japan is around 40k which is really good!
  • As suspected, Capcom missed a major opportunity with the lack of Megaman stock. They really underestimated demand
  • We could have a Zelda 1 2 next week
And let the nonsense commence. WOW.

Speaking of WOW,
PS4: 880
Xbox Series S + X: 263
There's nothing nonsense about that particular part. Pretty sure they mean "week on week" and not "wow"
Anyone think that Nintendo has any other major first party games lined up for 2023 after Pikmin 4?
Absolutely. Due to several factors including:
  • They made pretty strong software forecasts for this fiscal year
  • They said they would continue to release appealing software "starting with Zelda and Pikmin "
  • They've already released 7 games in 7 months
  • They need to show something at Gamescon in August

Mario Kart 8 is now the 10th best-selling software in Japan ever with smash right next to it. They will both likely pass Ruby and Sapphire by the time the next Switch comes out.

From the top 30, 28 games are Switch games, and only 2 are PS4 games.

Really is an almost total Nintendo domination. Will we get another top 30 exclusively of Switch games? Last time it happened it was very late into the PS4 life and the Switch was still young. Never expected for it to happen again with an old and Punished Switch, and a PS5 which is supposedly on its prime.

Ah, and I saw that Famitsu's top 50 for the year was released, and Octopath 2 was there.

Physically, it sold 110k so far. If we are generous with the split and assume it is 50%, it would mean that the game has sold 220k so far in Japan alone.

I will be the first to say that is a good result, but I did expect better from the game.

I don't get the confusion, the PS5 is selling hardware but not software. I don't think we are going to see a chart with higher PS5 presence until Sony manages to fix that problem. RE4 is only 133,000 on the PS4 you would think PS5 would have a game to do better than that.

PS5 down but still miles ahead of the next nearest traditional home console. Great to see Sony taking the top 2 sports in this category (PS5 + 4).

Luigi is the clearly the big winner from the Mario movie!

In addition to the announcements at Son'y showcase, we have had some noteable Japan announcements at other events as well:

  • Rune Factory 6 is in development, as well as a spin off called Project Dragon
  • Next Story of Seasons is in development, as well as another entry that sounds like it will have a big focus on online multiplayer (Story of Seasons GAAS?)
  • New Dragon Quest Monster game is in development for Switch
  • Infinity Strash: Dragon Quest - The Adventure of Dai is coming out 28 September
Next notable event in the RGG Summit.

Year is looking pretty decent for the Japanese market, but we need more holiday titles to be dated/announced.
