Veteran game creator Hironobu Sakaguchi is known for the epic RPGs he has brought into the world – but what games does he play? A recent post on Sakaguchi’s X account about the September 17 launch of Final Fantasy XVI’s PC version revealed a tantalizing glimpse into his Steam Library.

Post translation: (FF16 is about to launch) soon….
At any rate, I’ve bought a lot of games.
It’s rumored that I spend more time playing than creating lol.

Squinting at the screenshot of Sakaguchi’s Steam library, we can see that recently he has been playing some acclaimed open world games, namely The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Fallout 4 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, as well as recent releases Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 and Black Myth: Wukong (which he mentioned playing in an August Twitter post).

Other titles in Sakaguchi’s packed Steam Library are connected to his roots as a game creator. Alongside classic Square RPG Chrono Trigger, he has also been playing Tactics Ogre Reborn (created by close acquaintance Yasumi Matsuno).

Sakaguchi has also been tackling action games like Elden Ring and Lies of P, both known for their hard difficulty. However, Sakaguchi was focusing on 2D isometric action games back in April, playing Hades, Pyre, Transistor and Bastion. It’s hard to know whether this is one of Sakaguchi’s favorite genres or if he was just playing them for research purposes.

Then there’s the survival sandbox game Core Keeper, which seems like the odd one out in Hironobu Sakaguchi’s Library, but it just goes to show that top game creators tend to play a wide variety of titles. The Steam Library screenshot attached to the X post attracted much interest as it gave a snapshot of what kind of games the renowned creator plays.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
Chrono Trigger. I wonder how does he feel when he plays this best RPG of all time that he help created

(on a 50% discount right now on Steam btw)

I wish we could also see his playtime. I always wonder how much time game developers actually spend gaming.

This is anecdotal, but two game dev friends of mine (a graphics engineer and a senior artist) put in around 500-700 hours per year into gaming. On the other hand, another game dev (a UI/UX designer) barely has any time to play, so he's lucky if he can finish an Elden Ring-sized game in a year. So I guess it really depends on the person. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Too many Western games for Final Fantasy creator.

I don’t think its his fault though. Maybe he should consider re joining games industry.
