Maybe it was growing older, maybe it’s nostalgia, maybe it’s woke politics… but it’s been hard for me to capture that magic I once had playing games. I still enjoy them greatly, they just aren’t as special to me as the games of past.
Enter FFVII Remake and P3R. For context, I played Persona 4 Golden on Vita and Persona 5 on PS4 and loved both to bits. But I’ve never played a Final Fantasy game before… gave some of them a try but they just didn’t appeal to me. Also never played Persona 3.
Bored I picked up FFVII Remake just to try it out. I expected nothing going in.
Mind blown.
What a freaking amazing game. The music, the story, the characters, the action, the twists (even being spoiled before), gameplay was good, environments were cool… even side quests were enjoyable for me. Immediately picked up Rebirth right after but wanted to take a break before. I would play for hours on end every day where I wouldn’t see the sun and didn’t think I could handle Rebirth right after.
So I decided to dive into P3R. I subscribe to Game Pass and figured I’d experience it in case it got taken off. Now at the end of it, it’s become one of my favorite games of all time. The game made me think, feel, and reflect. It’s a game I’ll carry in my mind and heart for the rest of my life. The art style, the story, the characters, the music… the themes…. unbelievably amazing in every way. It’s a game I wish I could forget and experience all over again. I don’t like the ending, but I respect it.
Anyway, playing these games made me relive that exact magic I had playing my favorite games as a kid. Ironically, they’re both remakes. Is this a coincidence? I don’t think so.
I think nostalgia as an excuse is crap… games are either good or they’re not. The fact of the matter is most games today are over-marketed crap without any artistic vision.
Chrono Trigger if released today exactly as it was originally, pixels and all, would still be a masterpiece.
My point is this… yes gaming is a business but gaming is also art. Art without creativity, passion, or inspiration will always be garbage. Modern gaming is run by suits. Can this become a live service game? How many microtransactions can we include? Did we check all the diversity boxes in making it? That’s why modern gaming sucks for me generally speaking.
Old man rant over.
