I can't remember the last time I wanted to play a new FF game this badly. This one looks so damn good and I don't have a PS5. I think the reason I bought a Playstation was to play FF7. Here we go again.

Its like Tabata said, is the "FF disease" ppl cant accept that each FF game is a new take on the series, from gameplay to story telling, FF7Re ll be the same, purists ll trash the reviews for the changes in the story.
I think it's a really fair criticism of that game. Especially it was marketed Kojima swap style and there was no indication they were taking the kind of liberties they did to be fair.

Didnt say wasnt fair criticism, thats just the reality of FF games, FF17 or any possible remake ll be this same novel all over again

I've loving this game! Only about 5 hours in, but I think Kenneth is sweet on me, or I'm sweet on him? I can only deliver so much food, Ken! Invite me back to your mat on the floor already!

They stated from the outset that it wasn't going to be a 1:1 remake and that there were major liberties to be taken in numerous interviews. Just because you didn't pay attention to that doesn't mean that you weren't given ample opportunity to know what kind of game it was going in.

The whole arc with Benedicta is great. Some real high-octane stuff there. It's been awesome so far, but they should have allowed for higher difficulty level right out of the gate, and when you die in a boss fight you should have to start over or "pay" for the continue with a rare or expensive special item. That's my only gripe so far. In the Elden Ring era, players want to be challenged and punished. Danger should be lurking around every corner.
My thought is same as you until I fight later bosses with 3,4 stages + stagger bar...

What are your takes on the parry system? Been using training mode to get the grasp of it and...its difficult to land.
I don’t try to actively use it, when it happens it happens and I am happy but I will not try to master.

However there is a fire eikon ability that allows you to parry magic spells and send them back in a fire furry. When it lands it is 🔥

Just wanted to toss out that FFXIII is legit difficult at times. You can't brute force your way through anything in that game, even regular enemies. If you don't have the right paradigms in place you'll get your ass handed to you.

Agreed. FF13 is the hidden gem of the series. It has the best setting of the series, or any game for that matter. It’s still the Platinum trophy I’m most proud of.

"Not a 1:1" and what we got is so far apart it's not comparable. It's obviously some kind of sequel. They could have said this to start to temper some fans expectations. Show me the media in which they explained they were completely renovating the plot in the manner they did.

I started a new game in 2022 and made it to Gapra Whitewood. Booted it up last week after playing XVI demo and made it to Gran Pulse Wednesday night.

I'd actually rather be playing XIII right now but I'm sticking with XVI to be a part of the launch window conversation. I'm geeked to run around Gran Pulse though. I made it to the final boss at launch but never finished it. I'm determined to see it through this time around.

Because god forbid they wanted surprise the players, i mean that was kind whole point of story start to diverge.

Yoko Taro did same thing with Drakengard 3, the game advertise as prequel to original Drakengard but then suddenly it goes it’s own timeline separate from both original Drakengard and NieR.

I personally like when devs try to surprise me.

Would have been marketed better if they said it was a FF7 sequel because it pretty much is.

Played about 5 hours today and must be 8 hours in now. I went from liking the game in the first few hours to now loving it.

Once the story and progression gets going its so hard to put the controller down. Could have played this until 2-3am but stopped at midnight so I didn't burn my eyes and ear drums lol.

Honestly, FF fanboy glasses aside, this is biggest visual feast I have ever witnessed in a game before. Art direction combined with top notch tech and attention to detail in the environments = constant wows for me. Its just jaw dropping cutscene and vistas everywhere. Along with some amazing boss battles.

Love the characters, especially Cid and Benedikta so far.

Thats the problem with FF fanbase, nothing is good enough, "they changed the plot" "thats not FF" "thats not turn based" "action focused in not FF" "map isnt open world" "Its a corridor game" and the list goes on and on, i never saw another game franchise suffer from this "curse" like FF games suffers.

Just wait until Aerith surviving at the end of FF7Re and the fanbase meltdown

Yep, this is easily the most impressive visual spectacle we have seen on next gen consoles

20+ Hours in and I'm convinced Torgal's Ring might as well be the best DPS accesory in the game, the way it works makes Torgal use the "Presicion" versions of his attacks everytime Clive uses an attack with launching properties so even just using a Charged Shot works and Torgal actually does Break damage unlike other party members who only do HP damage, so he further helps in staggering bosses and then to add into the Bonus Damage Increase against staggered enemies.

There are 2 disadvantages to the ring though, against smaller enemies Torgal might break your combo flow depending on which attack he uses, and the other one is that Clive won't shut up during combat since he's constantly giving orders to Torgal.

BTW Presicion Ravage (D-pad down) does slightly more damage than Presicion Sic (D-Pad Up) and his Heal only works as a regen for HP in grey color he will never heal you back to full HP.

I think a lot of this is inherent to every FF changing things up so radically. Different FF’s are going to appeal more to different people. I’m a gameplay dude first and foremost, and V and XII really resonate with me because of the job system and the map design, respectively. A lot of people dislike both of those games because they don’t like their approaches to storytelling, and that’s totally okay. There are other FF’s that will probably work better for those people. In a series that reinvents itself with each new game, each game is going to have its fans and its detractors.

Me, Jill Warrick and the stupid dog have made it to some village which looks like Saxon England. The story’s so boring and I dont care about any of the characters & I zoned out during all the cut scenes, now both bridges are locked, I can only go backwards to an area I admittedly had some fun killing giant crabs with my latest abilities. I have no idea where to go next without going on YouTube. I’m actually English and this whole thing is just painful to sit through so I can’t imagine what everyone else from around the world is thinking.

Deep into the game
Track while exploring the Mothercrystal reminds me of Memoria from IX, what with the organs having a dominant presence in the composition. The aether lingering in the mines preceding the heart of the area, our first sequence of mob fights on the balcony - if looking toward the Mothercrystal, I see no difference from a 2D background being used in those SNES FFs. Otherworldly imagery and track music.

Addressing the battle mechanics and design, there honestly isn’t a whole lot going on in depth. I get it’s an action game, but I would also expect for Square to incorporate more strategic components that encourage a bit more thought. More creativity in the level design, look into inviting spells such as Float for traps and/or harmful terrain such as Lava, maybe Vanish that lets us get a preemptive on enemies (perhaps even skip enemies altogether).

For a one character action game, I was hoping to see some of that since we need not worry too much about factoring in a group of other characters who may not have those abilities. Hell, even Torgal could have inherited some of those same abilities or have Decoy cast on him. There’s a lot of rinse and repeat with little variation in between. Elemental weaknesses, Body Targeting, and/or more Status effects would’ve been nice additions. But it’s early so who knows. Hopefully they come in familiar forms such aa elemental Burn/Frozen/Shock or general Slow/Confuse/Stop/Petrify.

Steal or Poach (as an auto-finisher) for increased Crafting supplies and material.

I laugh because I zoned out too. Outside of main quest dialogue, I just spam X to get through most scenes. Side quest stuff is truly a slog. Thankfully the side missions so far are short.

Damn, I start feeling the length and the same XIV fatigue. Bro the why fetch quests.
I haven’t even done any of the sidequests. I talked to a few questgivers and saw the rewards were just money, so I declined. I’ll do them if I get desperate or if they actually seem interesting.

You are a big boy. You can read for yourself.
Edit: I don't even want to sit here and argue with you about this and it's really not the right thread for it. We will have to agree to disagree.

As far as XVI, finally started my copy. I decided to just start from where the demo left off because I'm short on time regretfully.. otherwise I would have played through again. Hoping to get as far as I can tonight! Hype.

Ok maybe I managed to improve things a bit with Gaming Tech's last tips. I'm still playing on HGIG and brightness at 5 but I've redone the PS5 HDR settings by limiting myself to 11 clicks set 1, 11 clicks set 2, all down to zero set 3. On a LG C9 800 nts. It seems - they say - the game has a little bug in reference to how it uses the system HDR and that's why you have to reset it differently from the other games (which usually just want you barely visible/not visible in set 1 and 2). I'll keep you posted.
I really don’t get why you are having such trouble. I have the C9 and made absolutely no changes and it looks perfect. My TV is simply default game mode, but set to HGIG. I then did the PS5 HDR calibration (two years ago). The game is just default brightness of 5. I have yet to think any scenes are too dark. All my games have always looked perfectly fine. I haven’t adjusted anything in years.

If u dont know what to do without looking at youtube its not the games fault cause every main quest has a huge red icon that u just need to follow, if u cant do something basic as following a red marker u are blind, a troll or just stupid, stop playing and look for help.

You can just click the thumb stick and the dog shows you where to go.

Seriously, how are we meant to believe these tools are actually playing the game? 😂🤦‍♂️

The game is fantastic. Love graphics(actually insane combined with that art), music and story although it's a bit simple and convoluted at the same time.
The combat is kinda spongy but very dynamic and challenging. To those saying "oh the game is too easy"... give me a break.
Not everything has to be a souls game. You maybe forgot that games had their own difficulties and playstyles rather than "make it as hard as possible, so it's more fun to watch on twitch than play".
I am very happy that the game is challenging yet perfectly manageable if I try well enough. Only died 2-3 times so far and it's never frustrating because they restock your potions. Again - thank god they are not another souls difficulty followers. To those saying "just put on the rings"... well yeah but no. Just because I don't want insane challenge, doesn't mean I don't wan to play normal game!
I would say the difficulty is much harder than Hogwarts for example. Hogwarts was so nice to be chill and relaxing while giving me fun with combos. You had to try but it was never tiresome. Here you have to really focus and try to get those perfect dodges. Parries are more of a chance if anything.

So in short. I enjoy the difficulty so far. I think aside from being a bit too spongy, it offers a good balance of action, challenge and not being souls lol.

Now, some nitpicks about the story and tropes. Someone can comment but please do not spoil me any events further down the road !!!!!
-5 years passed and not a single level or new item? Everyone dressed up the same? Kinda lame trope.
-Disappointed that everyone calls you CID now. It's very strange. Some still call you Clive. I think Cid is a replacement for "boss" in their camp.... still.. I was not so attached to it. We were always way more powerful. I was hoping for Clive, the Lord to be more recognized. Cid was a fun guy but I wasn't so much attached to him.
-5 years passed and they still did nothing about the slavery
-The Titan guy is a bit too angry with us. He had only 1 scene with Benedikta and she was whoring with everyone anyway.
-Destruction of the big blue crystal did nothing apparently. Still blight, Imperials still at large and taken other nations?
-How in the fuck is Jill not my wife yet ?!?!??! 5 years and she has not used her shiva pokemon once.
-How is the man in a robes Joshua if he was there 13 years earlier and whispered to us?! I don't also understand 2 ifrits fight. Is it clive just settings things straight morally in his mind ?
-If Josha is Joshua.... why in the world wouldn't he come clean to us. Why let his big brother think he killed him?
-The Alien guy got absorbed by joshua ? I realize the alien guy/guys are the "the fallen race". Hope it gets explained.

tl:dr I don't like being called cid and joshua not saying "oh hey its me"

It's good I have so many story questions but I doubt it all gets together and everything is explained.

”All right, people, we received complaints that Frey’s dialogue was too frequent in Forspoken, so we added an option that lowers its frequency.”
”Smart.”
”Yes, so for Final Fantasy XVI, we should do the same.”
”Actually, what if we have Clive barely say anything when exploring the environment?”
“Ooh, that‘s even better!”
”Yeah, we‘ll save him saying stuff for when he has Torgal attack!”
”Oh okay, so in combat, Torgal attacks on occasion?”
”Y-yeah……..or very frequently…”
”What was that you muttered?”
”Nothing!”

Still pretty good so far, despite that and a few other issues (that opening sequence made it way too obvious how the flashback prologue was going to play out, I would have kept Clive’s mission as a Branded entirely after the prologue). Just outside Lostwing. I feel Cid is easily going to be the Balthier (XII) of this game, where others characters are likable but he just eclipses them all easily. The god tier voice the English VA is doing helps, by god give this man more roles. Also, yes, good music, after the nothing OST that XV had (even XIII still had a OST that slapped), it’s nice with this and VII R to have some damn good FF music again.

I wouldn't touch the in-game slider. it's just classic brightness...youtubers use it when someone says "too dark" or when they have monitors badly calibrated lol.
The game just looks this way. I am personally playing with DTM and ps5 calibration also done with DTM(I know, blasphemy). Everything is brighter.
The orignal look with hgig calibration and using hgig is more toned down but effects and spells do pop more like that. Everything is just a bit too dark aside from spells.

the gamingtech guy does some good work but he always touches the sliders. If there are sliders, he will mess with them needlessly without understanding that maybe the game is made to look this way. Lowering slider to 2 and enabling dtm or other means to achieve more contrasts will make some scenes look good but ruin others.

It's good I have so many story questions but I doubt it all gets together and everything is explained.

Im in the same stage as you or similar, just got back to camp and left it

- I really liked Cid to be fair, I think he took on the mantle because mostly everyone who knew Cid is dead and he already had a reputation and done previous work trying to liberate branded, so he took on the name or the "legend" per say. Most people have heard of "CId the vicious" but not clive rosfield the deserter and he might want to keep it that way, on top of that he got the lightning powers to sell the story. It's sort of a decoy and also a way to honor his dead friend.

- I feel most of the 5 years have been spent rebuilding and liberating smaller groups, remember mostly everyone got killed, we dont know how long it took CId to build what he had, but presumably years, it makes sense it takes them years to rebuild and plan their next move.

- The crystal that was destroyed was in a kingdom that was about to be consumed by blight, presumably the damage was too much already, plus I dont think the energy goes back into the earth after destroying the crystal, it just dissipates, destroying the crystals might be a way to stop the damage but not reverse it. There are more crystals causing blight.

- yea they should absolutely be a couple by now, my only guess is that clive was a brooding incel most of the time lol

- Titan guy doesn't know his hoe belongs to the streets so he thinks hes avenging his love, and he thinks CId is alive because point 1

-I think theres gonna be some time travel shenanigans down the road

- The double Ifrit fight definitely happened inside Clive's mind, it was a way of him getting over his trauma.

- No clue, my only guess is that joshua is playing a bigger game and hes not ready to reveal himself

- I presume he imprisoned him within himself but that was only a temporary form as he said, so who knows what happens there. I cant wait to learn more

you and me both, that’s why V and XII place at the top 2 for me. Both of these games introduced an impeccable job system or gameplay philosophy compared to the rest of the series.

EPIC. Absolute epic (in the Greek sense) the Eikons are.
Typhon in the flesh from a black hole once the Crystal shatters. Just like FF.

Final form Typhon is sexy af.

My only gripe with the section right before
they use the same level for each room. That boss fight was nuts. Tiphon could have been an end boss in many different games. The crystal destroyed was more impactful in FFV than this. You know what throws me off? Pressing circle and starts aiming right away.as far as the questions… a lot of it will come later on. I wasn’t impressed by the other characters death either. Maybe I’m just not invested in this cast to care who dies. Not saying that’s a bad thing.

If u dont know what to do without looking at youtube its not the games fault cause every main quest has a huge red icon that u just need to follow, if u cant do something basic as following a red marker u are blind, a troll or just stupid, stop playing and look for help.

I’m well aware of that. The place I needed to go appeared to be locked. Eventually I went over to it and realised there was a lever to press which lowered Clive down and I could enter the next area head for said red marker. I didn't see the lever, my mistake although I don’t see lots of things as the entire game is shrouded in a layer of darkness even set to 10 brightness. When I get bored playing a crap game I lose concentration.

Ok that is by far my favorite Eikon. Such a sweet ass design ughh… reminds me of the Jenova spawns from FFVIIAC. What a shame…

These are not tears in my eyes, just Visine. 🫂

Wait until some of you guys get to the … Crystal. You have to appreciate the synergy between gameplay and story with the Summons. Magnificent execution.

Edit: fast forward, fast forward! Oh yeah, they were definitely inspired by AssCreed in this section. Hooded Clive baby.
