Hit a key plot point early on (3 hours ish). It's somewhat cliched but works well. Those Phoenix segments are intense on the performance lol

Edit: I don't even want to sit here and argue with you about this and it's really not the right thread for it. We will have to agree to disagree.

As far as XVI, finally started my copy. I decided to just start from where the demo left off because I'm short on time regretfully.. otherwise I would have played through again. Hoping to get as far as I can tonight! Hype.

There is nothing to "agree to disagree" with. Take the L, mate.

The forest theme, my ears.

May be the most beautiful FF forest theme of all time.

The music only gets better. I really hope they add some of these via Orchestrion roll in FFXIV. I want them playing 24/7 in my FC House.

The environments look incredible, as do the characters. However, there is something off about the shaders, as if they were going for somewhat of a subdued lighting or unlit/flat shader to a degree. I can’t explain it, but my eyes aren’t entirely convinced about the ambient exterior and interior lights affecting the characters.

It’s the style of course, most certainly an aesthetic not so different from FFXIV given it’s the same team, but I desire stronger lighting for some reason. I wouldn’t mind an option to reduce the Bloom too.

Am I seeing things or does Clive's face slowly age over time (once he becomes an adult)? Actually it is happening and he grows his beard stubble out a bit

I get that impression too, also there is at least 1 time skip during his adult life and he ages a little more

Yeah nearly everything has this overcast day lighting to it making things look a bit flat under scrutiny IMO. I think they didn't want lush/vibrant environments to clash with the bleakness of the times and the blight that's killing the environment.

So much this! I was exactly going to say Overcast lighting because I thought about GTA 5’s time cycle but only after I had posted. That’s spot on what I see though.

But yeah, I chalked it up to be a stylistic choice but sometimes it’s like my eyes wants it changed so badly.

I wish I didn't have to waste a trinket slot to make the dog do stuff on his own. Managing him manually seems like it would be a real distraction.
I'm only three hours in but the dog seems pretty pointless in terms of healing and damage output. I'm using my trinket slots for something else.

Enjoying the game so far. I'm not far past the demo end point
went to the hub, did the two side quests, and just finished the forest
and I'm enjoying the visuals and music. Love the voice actors for Cid and Clive characters. Combat is OK so far. Trying to train myself not to use circle to try to dodge, I end up dashing to the enemy I'm trying to dodge 😆.

Was a little confused about a couple elements of the story thus far, but the active time lore was very helpful.

So far so good 👍.

Ralph has gone in with the wrong expectations, wanted hella deep RPG, got amazing action game, has a cry.

I'm surprised, I normally align with his views but just like on TLoU2, I gotta hard disagree on this one. He's not banned here like in the clown place I take it?
Not at all what he presented in the video.

Anyone have opinions on timely accessories and whether or not any improve (or worsen) gameplay?

I was thinking of equipping the “assistance” one to auto-control party members but curious if I would benefit more from getting used to controlling them manually.

I don’t know why do you even need it? If you don’t use Torgal he will still automatically attack enemies. In my opinion he can be very useful launching the enemies while use Phoenix dash to them and while I’m doing my aerial combo I can use Torgal to extend combo even longer.

Edit: I still remember how people complained that enemies were “damage sponge”, man most normal enemies die really fast. I hope people learned their lesson they shouldn’t judge the game too quickly.

Dogo healing is useless. The Dogo damage starts very small but increases as he gains experience though the game. I always use the manual commands for the dog and even if i dont give him commands he still attacks and sometimes heals. Manual commands makes the dog do what u want, for example launching an enemy into the air so Clive can follow up with an aerial combo.

Starting to get confused here. When I'm on HGIG and unto the HDR setting of the PS5 should I follow the instructions on screen and set the "suns" as suggested or follow what those tech channel on YouTube suggests and go for one level less in 1 and 2 and complete dark in set 3? I always kept as GamingTech suggested but maybe with this game doesn't apply?
I hear hgig is broken with the game and ps5 hdr settings as the game continues to pump out 1500 nits regardless in hgig mode.

20+ Hours in and I'm convinced Torgal's Ring might as well be the best DPS accesory in the game, the way it works makes Torgal use the "Presicion" versions of his attacks everytime Clive uses an attack with launching properties so even just using a Charged Shot works and Torgal actually does Break damage unlike other party members who only do HP damage, so he further helps in staggering bosses and then to add into the Bonus Damage Increase against staggered enemies.

There are 2 disadvantages to the ring though, against smaller enemies Torgal might break your combo flow depending on which attack he uses, and the other one is that Clive won't shut up during combat since he's constantly giving orders to Torgal.

BTW Presicion Ravage (D-pad down) does slightly more damage than Presicion Sic (D-Pad Up) and his Heal only works as a regen for HP in grey color he will never heal you back to full HP.
I've never taken the Ring of Do It Yourself Torgal off since I put it on. I originally only put it on because I didn't want to deal with micromanaging him during combat but yes he automatically has perfect timing Sics and Ravages, much better than a human probably could with the default control mapping. Against bosses it's just a bit more DPS really, as you are doing 90%+ of the breaking yourself at worst. Against small enemies it's fun when he launches them and you follow with Phoenix Shift to air combo them.

Yeah I highly recommend that one, it automates commands given to Torgal the dog and he always uses the "presicion" versions of his attacks which deal more damage and unlike regular auto attacks those actually deal Break damage to staggerable enemies.

BTW for players who still don't want to equip that ring in order to manually do Torgal's Precise Attacks you need to give the command the moment Clive finishes an attack with launch properties so for example at the end of his 4 combo string or after a Charged Attack.

I personally like when devs try to surprise me.

Sure but when it's
DEV:"Here is the thing you want"
GAMUR: "NOICE"
DEV: "SURPRISE IT'S NOT THE THING YOU WANT"

the situation changes quite a bit. You can surprise viewers while also meeting their expectations.

Sure but I can only speak for myself, I liked what they did with FFVIIR, I was expecting some changes but not to this extent, so for me it was pleasant surprise.

A bit more than halfway.

Honestly, if they did actually put black bearers here, I bet they would riot. So there’s no way winning these people. I mean seriously, there’s no pleasing these diversity screeching banshees.

Crafted a Longsword +1 without realizing I could just reinforce the one I had equipped.

I did this with another weapon and reloaded my previous auto-save lol. Swords come and go so quick early on though. Also make sure to check the blacksmith for swords you can craft that aren't available at merchants.

Not at all what he presented in the video.

I think that’s a pretty accurate assessment

- wants a party system
- wants a big open world
- wants more complex items and magic effects

Basically the final fantasy of ff7 and beyond. That’s never what this game was pitched to be. It’s an action rpg with heavy focus on story, set pieces, and combat. And it excels greatly at all of these aspects

Some of his complaints are valid, but I think the parts of FF16 that it focuses on are so strong as to overlook those aspects and appreciate the improvements we are now getting in terms of story, presentation, music, and action combat.

It’s not a perfect game, but it’s a long needed step in the right direction that they can build on for the future and resolve some of his qualms. His overall take that he can’t personally recommend or that it’s a step back in the series seems wildly out of touch amongst most reviewers and the general gaming public. He’s free to his opinions of course, but it sounds like he wants a very specific type of FF game that really isn’t what most modern audiences want

Except they didn't do that. It is more:
DEV: "Here is something new using fan favorite characters."
GAMUR: "THIS ISNT A 1:1 REMAKE!@#!"
DEV: "We never said it was. We said it is something new. Using the same characters."
GAMUR: "YOU LIED #$%%@#%"

Use your brain, pay attention to interviews. It isn't hard.

Funny thing is - it has everything he wants. It has a party and you can even control one of them at all times. It has massive open areas that may as well be "open world' as you can freely go anywhere you want through much of the game. Or are we going to pretend games like FFXIV aren't open worlds either? The items can become complex and offer more variety in build choice and player engagement. Magic effects are complex and how they can string together and interact with each other.

The game is more free than most other Mainline FF games and offers much more in side content from the outset than them as well. Plenty to discover, unlock, and explore. Hidden unique boss fights if you stray from the path, highly powerful items you can find in chests (or craft from items you get from said boss battles).

So many of his and others complaints about this game are nonsense. "It's linear" "there isn't much choice" "It is more spectacle than skill" "Its mostly cutscenes" - all utter nonsense by anyone who has actually played the game.

I will never understand folks that get all pissy that a game that has been clearly marketed, designed, and sold as X expects that it should be Y instead.

This is the issue what FF faces today. Fans want it hardcore and not simplified but the SE wants it very accessible to newcomers and even non-gamers so some mechanics have to be simplified. If they go hardcore only, they will alienate the new crowd and simply pleasing the niche hardcore crowd. If they make it only as simplified without difficulty options, then they will lose the hardcore crowd.

This applies to all forms of media honestly: go in with no expectations and happiness often follows if the product is well made.

Nah, expectations are fine. But they need to be realistic. If you order a steak off the menu and expect it to be a lobster, that is entirely on *you*, not the store or chef. No different here. FFXVI has been clearly marketed as a particular game. Yet we keep seeing people cry how it isn't completely different.

I like skillup and the way he presents his opinion but I disagree with his assesment of 16, which is weird to me because he made a nearly hour long video defending XV back in the day and this is flat out a better experience.

But if you watch his content regularly it makes a little bit more sense, he's a reviewer that enjoys open worlds and world "interactivity" + exploration a lot, he criticised red dead redemption 2 for the scripted nature of its world encounters despite it being probably the most impressive open world game to date (imo).

He puts in a lot of value in the quality and depth of sidequests, he made that a big point of his horizon forbidden west and god of war ragnarok reviews, he enjoys deviating from the main objective and finding "hidden things", he doesn't mind back tracking through huge maps and completing big side quest chains.

Its a clash between what he feels FF should be and more importantly what he feels good game design is, in his video he goes on to say how good video game design has learned to show good story stelling via gameplay and shows snippets of god of war ragnarok, particularly a QTE of Kratos helping Atreus shoot a deer, yet is particularly critical of XVI QTEs. Personally Id much rather watch story exposition via high fidelity cutscene than in game walking section with characters talking to each other while you hold up on the joystick.

He criticizes 16 saying even the main quests are just combat arenas one after another with a boss fight at the end. But something like GOW:R missions are mostly the same except sometimes you find a chest or an inconsequential sidequest that will reward you with meaningless loot or crafting materials (in horizons case too), he enjoys those aspects of games, the same way he enjoys the loot and equipment upgrades of Destiny. In FFXVI your rewards for sidequests are mostly currency and not gear or equipment so I can see how that could fail to keep him engaged.

He mentions how getting a Chocobo is useless because there's nothing to do in the world, however I think its great that there is a chocobo because I would like to traverse faster than on foot. Just because I have a ride doesnt mean I wanna take it to the edge of the map.

So when he plays XVI and sees that the world is not that open, exploration is not deep or rewarding and that most sidequests arent nearly all that, hes going to come away conflicted and frustrated.

Furthermore he starts his review saying not to take his as the be all end all of reviews of this game because he knows a lot of people are going to enjoy it and that it doesnt cater to his specific set of beliefs.

Personally most of these cons Ive mentioned are pros for me, in an era where mostly everything is open world and filled with bullshit I am extremely happy to play a game that focuses on its main story and a curated experience with high fidelity visuals and incredible spectacle in the form of massive scale and incredible cutscenes. It feels dated, like he says, but in a good way, it takes me back to an era where games weren't filled with a bunch of bullshit to drive more engagement.

Or didn't press L3 and use Torgal.

Then we're supposed to believe they're really playing the game 😂
“Hmm. I need to get to the church down there, but this 100ft tall elevator is in my way. Fuck this game!!”

That handle even has a white diamond waypoint marker if you get within 15ft of it. Devs should have put a looney toons sign above it that says “pull me⬇️
