Quick story. I met a Japanese guy a couple years ago who plays a lot of Jrpgs and watches Anime. Dubs were brought up and he informed me that most western Jrpg/Anime fans always make the assumption the Japanese dub is superior, when in reality a lot of them are trash. We just assume it's better because we don't understand the language and many times can't tell if the voice actor is overacting, underacting, or delivering emotions poorly.
Correct, I said this last year in response to a post made about the Diofield Chronicles:

Bottom line, Japanese voices are more often than not just as bad or worse but weebs who spend their days jerking off to anime titties will forever be bamboozled by the mysteries of this language.

_________________________________________

As for the ongoing discourse about FFXVI it's comical that one of those weebs keeps pushing a "honeymoon period" narrative even though many longtime FF fans have finished the game and proclaimed it as their current GOTY while another user keeps regurgitating the same criticisms over and over again like anyone gives a shit lol. Look, FFXVI is *divisive* just like... VII was, just like VIII was, just like IX was, just like X was, just like XII was, just like XIII was, just like XV was, see a pattern? Shocking, I know!

I've already said everything I needed to say in my previous, lengthy post though I forgot to mention both some positives and negatives (the brilliance of Active Time Lore, the pointlessness of almost every treasure chest in the game). The only upcoming game that has a good chance of unseating it as my current GOTY is Armored Core 6 though I *hope* there will be more releases this year that blow my mind, who wouldn't want that? So far this year I've bought and completed:

-Dead Space (killer remake)

-Atomic Heart (rough around the edges but I dug Russian Bioshock)

-Hogwarts (loved it but no more Merlin trials!)

-Wo-Long (Team Ninja goodness though I prefer Nioh series)

-RE4 (astoundingly good remake of a GOAT-tier game, GOTY shortlist)

-Dead Island 2 (plat trophy, very good, Dying Light 2 is better)

-Jedi Survivor (fantastic *despite* the plethora of technical problems, plat trophy)

-Street Fighter 6 (GOTY shortlist, so damn good)

- Diablo IV (GOTY shortlist, best Diablo campaign ever though I'm still deciding if I'd put it above D2R)

It's been a benchmark year all around, I'd encourage people to find something they *do* enjoy rather than waste the precious resource known as time arguing with strangers over something they don't like. Oh and did I mention: Final Fantasy for life ⚔️

Here’s another clip I made with the loud chirping noise. Pretty much starts immediately and can be heard with every step.

I finally heard it myself the other day, but I had to actively listen for it. It feels like someone accidentally hit a certain sound frequency with one of the many equipment sounds for Clive’s armor, and it is coming across really bad audibly if you can hear that frequency more clearly than other people can.

I actually hear what you're talking about this time and I'm pretty sure it's the armor of the character "squeaking" as they walk, very much intentional though I understand how some might be sensitive to such a high frequency 🤷‍♂️

But the sound is tied to Jill. The sound goes away once she’s on screen. The sound only started once she joined the party. One poster on Reddit said it has something to do with her character being reset when not on screen, which is why it only happens when she’s not on the screen.

I finally got around to reporting the bug the square enix. It’s been a long time since I’ve reported a bug to a game company.

Did you first hear it at

That one deadlands/blight area where the music stops, early on in the game?

That’s where a few others first started hearing it and Jill is in your party when it happens. I think it doesn’t help that it’s one of like 3 sounds you can pick up on during that sequence.

I hear it too and was a bit annoyed at first. Then I stopped paying attention to it. If I think about it it drives me crazy.

I take it as metallic part of Jill outfit doing it. It also happen when she's on screen if she walks. But somehow she doesn't walk much when you look at her or put her in the camera vision.
Not sure this is a bug actually, just an annoying sound design choice.

Usually I watch/play something with the intended language.

In the case of FF16, I started with Japanese, because of Japanese game lol, liked it, got used to it and that is why the English voice over felt weird to me.
Also just because I have an anime Avatar doesn't mean I watch anime all day, far from it.

It really seems like I hurt peoples feelings just because I liked or rather preferred one over the other.

This game has some amazing FMVs, last few sessions toward the end of the game have been nothing short of amazing. My jaw dropped *_*

This is the most spectacular FF I’ve played so far. Also the most boring collection of side quests I ever seen outside 14 XD

The rest though… peak FF

Each its own but the game has been made with the english voices first despite being a japanese game so the intended language is English for FFXVI

I played the titan fight on friday night and didnt play the next real story mission until late last night. so 4 days actually.

The story fetch quests have been utterly abysmal since that titan fight. I spent what must be an hour in the new town by the waterfall talking to like 10 different people to try and find some kid. before that i had to talk to like 20 people to try and get parts for mid's new ship design. if that didnt take 2 hours then it sure did feel like 2 hours.

add in side quests where you are literally running around talking to people or handing out gems, and some bounties, and it is most definitely 10 hours between the two main story missions.

lol i did those quests just last night and its all honestly so bad i couldnt believe it. Im sure this town was a prank by some devs who got drunk one night and bet each other that they could insert mmo level quests in a $70 AAA game and no one would notice. 87 metacritic proves this. if this was the whole game, it would review worse than forspoken which topped out at 64 on metacritic. apologies to rofif rofif , i bet forspoken is citizen kane compared to these trash quests.

the goblin standing next to that dude was so funny i actually took a screenshot. And yes, its hilarious that the very next side mission has you kill goblins anyway.

Fuck me, man I just did this whole section last night and I was in tears after reading your posts..

I just spammed x on every convo which made it more entertaining.

The gold was the goblin Prince who was a goodie then you walk around the corner and kill a load of goblins attacking that numpty.....

What the fook was this whole section...

Finding a pick pocket kid....what is this game...

I will finish the game today. Overall it's very good but doing all sideqursts killed pacing for me and even some main story segments are slow.

Some moments are just fucking mind-blowing, it's like a sequel to God of War 3 that we never got. OST is masterful, really great stuff.

Graphics are... mixed, sometimes game looks amazing and sometimes very early PS4 gen. 30 fps lock and bad IW doesn't help.

Story so far is great and much better than some entries in the series. World design is IMO much better than in most open world games, I prefer what is here with map sections and instant loading times. Battle system is good.

Overall I would give it 8.5/10.

I have finally finished this game and have some closing thoughts.

I feel like the ending isn't as impactful as it should have been. Joshua's death felt like any other character's death because the relationship with Clive wasn't really developed. Joshua was supposedly dead for half of the game, only to join Clive later on with little to no story consequence apart from providing exposition to explain who is Ultima and what is Ultima's motives. I've been reading quite a few theories on what happened at the conclusion of the story. My take is that Clive really did die at the end, and the book was written probably by the Undying order that protects Phoenix. Seeing as its supposed to be a secret order, they probably used Joshua's name as he's a well known successor to Rosalith's throne. I think Jill sensed Clive's life ended, the same way Clive knew Jill was still alive after Barnabas kidnapped her, hence why she left the room crying.

Overall it was a fun game I thought. If they had just made a character action game, and cut out all the half assed RPG elements, would have made the game a more focused experience. Nothing really revolutionary on the story front, it became about who had the stronger resolve, very standard Shonen stuff really. It was entertaining though. This game reminded me so much of Tales of Arise. I think Clive was very similar to Alphen, in that he starts of as a brooding hero, and as the story progresses, turns out to be someone who has very bombastic reactions to adversity i.e. crying loudly and shouting at the top of their lungs. Don't really like that but it is what it is.

That's some crazy revisionist history. Every classic FF has been filled with countless random encounters.

And 80% of FF13 is going through tedious linear "dungeons" filled with unavoidable enemies using a battle system that doesnt not give you any options or agency until the end. It's like if you took the ancient ruins of FF16 and made you play through 8 hours of them in succession. 16's sidequests may be generic, but atleast they gave you the oppotunity to take a break from the main story path. FF13 had none of this until the end. No backtracking, no optional bosses. No nothing until you were finished most of the game. Not even a town where you could take a breather and talk to NPCs to learn about the world.
I wasn't talking about random encounters but the gratuitous qte cutscenes that are just meant to look good without any real point.

Also the battle system was significantly more challenging and deep than what we have here. The 'auto battling' is pure bullshit.
I’m hoping tonight the game hooks me. The same issue I had with Hogwarts is present here. The pacing is just awful in the beginning.

I’m at the part early on where it let me know it’s a point of no return. Buddy hyped up this stuff coming up so we will see.

The game so far has a lot of “check out this cool moment” followed by hours of god damn nothing.

Otherwise I’ll have to shelf this until a gaming lul with nothing better to play.
Lol for most the beginning was the best part of the game. It's all downhill after the prologue and gets especially bad after halfway point, turning into a generic shonen fest. Imo of course. There are about 5 more 'cool' cutscenes in this game spaced about 10 hours apart. If doing fetch quests for 10 hrs to get to the cool part is your jam...

I just “accepted the truth” so I don’t know how far I am into the game. Pretty epic so far, love the linearity of it all. Sidequests are pretty lame and I feel unnecessary, feel like extra padding. That’s probably my only complaint. Also the story pacing is a little bit inconsistent.

Sometimes a lot of epic shit happens in 15 minutes, then only boring shit happens for 2 hours. Game probably could’ve been shorter.

All I'll say is that the auto-battle meme for FFXIII is complete nonsense.

The battle system is incredibly fast and engaging once it opens up a bit. The role system is basically a job system and it's a constant juggle with switching paradigms to make sure the stagger meter fills up and your characters are buffing, debuffing, absorbing damage/blocking for the rest of the group, healing, curing, etc. The stagger meter is actually dynamic in FF13, it's not just a shield bar that gradually depletes like in XVI. <-- I only point that out to give a better idea of what I mean when I say Dynamic. I'm not saying that XIII has a better battle system, the games are completely different. You also have to cast Libra for auto-battle to even be effective. The auto-battle button in the Japanese version translates to 'Attack', Digital Foundry goes over this in their retrospective. You can go all manual if you want and sometimes have to to efficiently heal/raise, but the later game battles are so fast when everyone has access to Haste that it's hard to keep up with the flow of things. You're also scored/timed and how well you do affects the loot you get. It's very arcadey and really engaging if you enjoy how the paradigm system works.

Complain about anything else (outside of the OST), that's fine and understandable for the most part, but people who say the battle system is purely auto-battle legitimately don't know what they're talking about. The game will mop the floor with you if you don't know what you're doing and most of the best paradigms aren't one of the options to select within the menu, you have to go in there and customize it yourself. The game is constantly switching up characters on you and it really forces you to understand and master all the various roles and how they play off each other. There's also hardlocks with the summons. If you can't figure out to stagger them and you run out of time, try it again, game isn't letting you past. The game is anything but mindless/easy when it comes to the battle system.

I platted XIII and the battle system was one of its better parts. The battle system was very engaging in fact. Especially if you wanted to maximize damage and win quickly. You needed to change paradigms on muscle memory basically. I beat Shaolon gui's for a living, in order to get all the best weapons and gear, and I think I beat them in under a minute by first manually debuffing and buffing, and then to go town with paradigm changes. I will say the rating is broken, I 5 starred everything and you can basically equip a low tier weapon to ensure 5 star since it raises the target time by a lot. You're gimping yourself if you try some 5 stars with ultimate weapons.

I think the battle system of Lightning Returns was even better. Its more hands on and sometimes movement is key too, as is perfect blocking. XIII-2 was a downgrade, it was an easier XIII.

U ara at 15%, maybe 20% pacing is this game is awfull, that and sidequests are the weakest points in this game for me

Ragnarok was gripping from beginning to end. It’s actually a game, not a mildly interactive movie. The God of War games are so intriguing that my girlfriend sat and watched me play through them both. I can‘t imagine someone spectating this game all the way through.

I just sold my copy to someone locally. I feel bad for those who bought it digitally and have no way to recover their cost.

John Marston

GAF's very own treasure goblin
I remember earlier posts on the subject but now I'm about at 60% completion and a lot of sidequests are some if the laziest dumbass insulting quests I've ever seen.

I'm surprised that shit got approved into the final build of the game.
This even worries me for the future of the franchise.

Finished my second play through and got the Platinum last night. I really like the game overall and would probably give it an 8/10. I’d say that this game is tied with SF6 for my GOTY so far. I also feel like the game is the best Final Fantasy since 12.

Pros
- Combat, especially in Final Fantasy mode
- Main characters
- Graphics
- Enemy design
- Story and Dialogue
- Music
- Set pieces and Eikon battles

Cons
- Early to mid-game side quests
- No optional dungeons
- Enemy scaling
- Mostly average supporting cast
- Next to no elemental depth to the gameplay
- Torgal could have been implemented better

yes, GoW Ragnarok was a disappointment for me, I was hoping for more spectacle and what I got was the power of love and friendship, I didn't even get to use Thor's hammer.

FF16 is closer to Gow 2 and 3 (bests in the series) in scale and spectacle, but my wish is that 16 didn't hav soo much downtime between main quests.

I showed The Veil clip to my wife and she was like, "wtf is this, this is on PS5? Why is that guy's head so small....is that what you've been playing down stairs...this is that new game?!?" I was dying 😅🤣

Found this regarding the ending

I'll copy and paste what I wrote in the spoiler thread. I didn't discover all of this, but this is basically the more popular theory going around the internet right now, and it makes the most sense.

Reasons why Clive took on Joshua's name and wrote "Final Fantasy"
  • It's not the first time Clive took on another person's name.
  • Harpocrates gives Clive a quill, asking him to put down the sword and take up the pen once he defeats Ultima. This scene is intentionally before the final battle.
  • "The only Fantasy here is yours. And we shall be it's Final witness!" Nobody except Clive and Ultima were there to witness that line. The name of the book is "Final Fantasy."
  • Clive is the narrator of the story. He narrates the beginning and the ending of the game. "And thus did our Journey end." The Platinum trophy is called "The Chronicler" with the subtext "And thus did our Journey end."
  • Clive is right handed. His left hand turned to stone. The curse seemingly stops there.
  • Metia doesn't fade because Clive "dies". It fades because Clive destroyed all magic in the world. This also explains why Jill can't sense him anymore and assumes he's dead.
  • There's a scene where Jill explains how when the dawn breaks, she knows he'll return to her. This scene is also intentionally before the final battle.
  • Part of Clive's character arc is learning how to save himself. This is directly called out multiple times by other characters, including Jill.
  • The End Credits song spells out Clive returning to Jill.
I was searching for something,
Moongazing,
Frightened of the storm
When you appeared to me.
I was so glad
It was you.

I have no doubt
This flame will never go out,
Just like nothing
Ever happened.

The song literally plays right after Jill's smiles at the sunset and fades to credits.

Symbolism has always been an important part of Final Fantasy's storytelling throughout it's history. All of this is deliberate. Clive Alive.

I'll take it. Convincing enough.
ehhh I dont know
Metia part. The star died exact moment Clive and Magic died. True... but the start is just a star. It got nothing to do with magic on the planet. I don't see the connection.

Agent_4Seven

Tears of Nintendo
Props to the character and outfit designers. They've nailed it with all the characters, especially Clive Rosfield, Jill Warrick and our lovely doggo (Torgal)
I'd choose them over any characters in FF series till now. Became my favorites.

Really not a fan of the red and black armor Clive gets with new gear and the sword. The starting armor set is miles better - I wish there was an option to switch back.

Whilst the Metia/Star part is definitely up for interpretation, Harpocrates quill for Clive to write a book that ends up being written is convincing.

"There's a scene where Jill explains how when the dawn breaks, she knows he'll return to her. This scene is also intentionally before the final battle."

She suddenly stops crying when dawn breaks and perhaps a she can sense he's alive? She appears to then smile and look relieved.

The thing about his "death" is that it came across as more of a passing out from exhaustion, only his hand withered and the rest of his body was in tact, whilst I believe the others who passed away from magic use had much more of the curse visible across their body.

Then the music lyrics basically being him returning to her.

Personally the ending annoyed me as I wanted a clear cut happy ever after dammit! I hope the DLC is an epilogue to settle it once and for all.

  • They padded out the game the only way they knew how. Static conversations with NPCs and fetch quests. CBU3 is primarily an MMO developer and this was their first single player game. It definitely shows, and I don't think there was anyone on their team (anyone with enough pull) to warn them against designing some of the quests this way.
CBU3 made Dragon Quest Builders 1 and 2 also.

Ok people not going to lie, the English voice over is growing on me, it's not bad, at all. I worded it badly yesterday, sorry.
I just wasn't used to it.

I will keep it for this second playthrough.
Just defeated the first big bossy again.

Just did the Bahamut section, and that's it the games gone off the rails....its gone pure anime....ender of worlds shit. It's like a whole other teams stepped in since the titan fight.

Like two different writers wrote two halves. Interested to see where its going to go now, but its all just gone typical anime weird...which I'm fine with to be honest, just notnwhat I expected from the set up in the first half.

I actually wanted Clive's outfit to lighten up a bit after a certain heartwarming story moment, to incorporate his past self back into his present self.

Here's young Clive official art:

Here's older Clive's model:

And then interestingly to compare, here's the concept art for older Clive:

This is what I eventually wanted, and I feel like the inclusion of a light gray or white would have helped his outfit's look, reflecting the perfect combination of Old Clive and Young Clive.

However instead the in game model is 99% red and black except for maybe one spot on his shirt. It just felt like a design that was almost there and became a bit lost in translation somehow.

TBH, the game looks and plays very well even on fidelity mode. Been playing from the beginning and it plays smooth as silk.
I've watched the DigitalFoundry video and they even suggested to keep it at 30fps to play. No thanks. If it doesn't have aPC port down the line, then I might pick it up but it won't be on the top of my priorities.

Devs already stated PC port is in the works and will be out once SE has fulfilled their exclusivity deal with Sony.

Creative Business Unit III should get an award just for making sure a game is released with such high production values, with little to no bugs at all... Superb fidelity overall and playable, just like it's supposed to be, you know, when someone spends money on a game.

It's the least a gamer can expect, but the idiotic "ship now, fix later" mentality is ruining the industry, with silly Day-1, Week-1, Week-2, Week-3 patches, hotfix, etc. and whatnot.

It's an amazing game.

I've been critical of the wooden dialogue and the cutscene mocap, but now that I'm on my second playthrough, I am appreciating Soken's score that much more.

The moment in Phoenix Gate when the Dragoon falls upon you and you're there ripping and shredding everything around you and then THIS PLAYS...

HOLY SHIT, goosebump inducing.

I wish there were more Dragoon fights, I always really enjoy those. Tougher enemies in general too, that's when the combat truly shines. I'm sure NG+ fulfills that but no way in hell I'm diving back in once my initial playthrough is done.

Yea, even though I'm not too keen on the adult Clive outfit, the biggest thing for me is how much he stands out. Going into town all recon mode with his Uncle, let me just put my hood up... Like what? lol. Everywhere you go there's like 30 people, dude stands out like a sore thumb. Just goofy as hell to me.
