Here's my theory- this is a low budget game overall. They only had budget for about 10 or so hours of mocapped cutscenes, and were forced to significantly scale back the story as a result.
It's evident from just how underdeveloped most of it's characters are. It's ridiculous to think a professional writer would put characters so half baked into a game. They had a vision regarding grant politics, with an ensemble cast ala got, and then had to pivot midway to focus entirely on the existential threat villain storyline leaving the kingdoms, the side villains underdeveloped. Even the main villains are kinda generic and forgettable.

So with a 10-13 hr story in their hands, and a lack of budget left for anything else, they padded out another 40 or so hrs with last minute side quests that wouldnt require much writing or animation work.
That might be the case cuz literally everything but true story missions are just complete garbage, even side quests with huge + which are not supposed to be the turds.

I mean, JFC, even with all the good stuff in mind (which is not much), this game is just one hell of a disappointmet. If they don't have the plans to make a MUCH BETTER version in the future and release it on consoles alongside with the PC version, they might as well just abandon this game completely along with development of the PC version.

I just can't see myself playing this game again, moreover, I'm at the 30 hour mark, just got to the desert and already don't feel the need to continue playing cuz I just know it won't get better and will stay the same, when it comes to the things I strongly dislike. Idk what I'll do yet, continue playing or not, but what I know for sure is that at least I can get most of my money back by selling the game to someone else and I never thought that I'll say this before the game was released.

Again, they DO NOT have 40 hours side quest. Stop spreading misinformation.

Just decided to take a peak in this thread, because I've been recently playing this game, only about 7-8 hours in
(at the point where Jill and Clive head to Rosaria)
. I've been loving the spectacle of the game, and I'm curious where it's all going in the story, but some of these posts from near the top of the page have me concerned...:messenger_persevering:

To me it almost feels like it started as a spinoff title. A linear, stage based DMC-style action game. Then later on they decided to expand it into a full mainline title.

The linear story levels feel like they’re from a completely different game from the open zones where you can run around and do side quests and stuff. The crafting system is a total afterthought, there’s barely anything to craft, and the items you can craft are just marginal stat increases that don’t change how you play at all. Certainly doesn’t seem like they would’ve planned it that way from the start.

Reasonable take. Plus the combat in this game resembles the depth you'd expect in a 10 hour game. Even dmc has more depth.

My advice? Skip all side quests like the plague. Try to rush through to the next main objective. Skip the low budget mannequin cutscenes as well. And keep low expectations regarding story. Don't expect character development or satisfying resolutions for most characters.
What you can look forward to: spectacle. Lots of it to the point even some graphics whores in here got numb to it.

Lol, guys it isn't that complicated. They put most of their budget and polish into the main sequences of the game.

The quests aren't even bad. They're just basic, like any other JRPG. They're just jarring because the high points are so high.

But at least they're short due to how fast the fast travel is and the small size of the world.

I think they still do a good job of fleshing out side characters and making the world feel more lived in. How you have to go to the market to buy stuff, or go catch pickpockets, or investigate a missing courtesans.

This game is mediocre as fuck. I'm now mashing X to skip over all the bloated and tired dialogue. Oh yeah, let's fade to black quick, and again, and again, and again. So many stupid decisions that constantly stop the game to make you press a fucking button, drives me nuts.

Press button to highlight the items I just had to hold X to gather, press button to hand it over SLOW AS FUCK. Let's do this 100 fucking times.

Clive is also a giant pussy.

Don't give the haters any notice, they're doing the generic "nitpick the popular game" thing that always happens in these OTs.

If you're enjoying the game stick to it, because there's many amazing moments to come.

Nice try trying to frame glaring issues as nitpicks. Game's broken in even worse ways than ff15. 'popular' doesn't mean much when ff15 and 13 got awesome reviews. An ethusiast gaming forum will have higher demands of quality.

Nice try lol. Framing minor issues as "broken" IS nitpicking. Its exactly what you're doing.

I can do it too! FF15 had worse combat, had worse pacing issues and literally removed large chunks of the story due to the rushed nature of the game. And 13 the entire game itself was a giant pacing issue, far worse dialog and far worse "sidequests". Both these games only get redeemed by their climaxes.

Reality is, that FF16 is better than both, and many would say it's the best FF game since 10.

How so? I just replayed all of FF15, and the DLC shortly before this game came out, and that game is straight up unfinished. I hated the gameplay, even if I eventually got into a groove with it. The best parts of that game are the DLC, and even that was left unfinished sadly.

My initial impressions of 16 are it's a much better designed game. It feels polished to hell, but also limited in scope. Very pretty, and beautiful to look at, but limited interaction. Not a big fan of going the more overt action direction also.

If I had to compare it to another FF game so far, it'd actually be Final Fantasy 13. Not in terms of combat, but in terms of scale and production. Great to look at, but not much going in that the player can actually feel and touch. The combat in this is more interactive for sure, and it doesn't suffer the overwhelming tutorializing that FF13 had, but it feels like a lot of corridors again.

Nah ff15's combat is about the same level as this one. Comparing them doesn't really matter as all three games have about equal scores on metacritic.

Ff13's combat had the depth to last 50 hours. This one wears itself thin in 15 hrs. It's shallower than any dmc game.
And it's got issues that in some ways make it worse than 15. The first 10 hours are by far it's peak. It's padding is on an entirely different level. 80 percent is fetch quest level stuff. Of course you haven't quite encountered the bad parts yet.
It's worse storywise too imo. It devolves into generic teenage anime fest pretty quickly, if you were expecting got level political intrigue you're outta luck. 15 had far better character development.
This is also the easiest ff game ever made. You can easily get by on buttonmashing against non boss enemies.

That's complete nonsense. FF15s combat was far more basic. It didn't even have dedicated block or dodge actions, instead relying hold to auto dodge. It didn't even have variations on abilities and only allowed you to use 1 magic at a time. 16 is DMC lite, while 15 is like KH lite. Saying 15 and 16 have similar levels of complexity is a complete lie 😂

You're describing every final fantasy game. Final Fantasy has always been anime inspired and FF15 is entirely a teenage anime drama.
None of the game present any sort of challenge for standard enemies and random encounters.

I'm coming up on the end now. Just the fight with
Origin
left now. I've done all the hunts and sidequests. The last bunch of sidequests do have good pay-offs but it all depends on how big a stick up your ass you have about the plodding you needed to do to get there. For me, a lot of it has stuck the landing. I found myself actually caring about most of the side characters and their backstories. The story and the gameplay are both winners in my book but they did drop the ball on level design and the overall world which feels empty and actually discourages exploration because many of the more interesting off the path ways are gated behind either hunts or sidequests.

Overall, I'll give it the same I gave GoW Ragnarok: 7/10

Every final fantasy I've ever played has been noticeably more challenging than the buttonmash fest this game has been, including 15. To say this game has any more depth than 15 is the absolute lie. Why work overtime to defend a game like you're insecure? 😂

I beat the game. So my feelings on the game were pretty consistent throughout my playthrough. I enjoyed the story above all else. Thought gameplay left a lot to be desired. Found the game utterly boring most of the time. It just lacks the things I love in RPGs.

And then toward the end I even started to become disappointed in the story. In the beginning I was enjoying it a lot because it was very Games of Throne-ish. It felt unlike a typical Final Fantasy. I appreciated the fresh approach. Then once it started to gravitate toward the whole fate, destiny, overcoming a god stuff with Ultima my opinion of it declined considerably. In the end, so many of the major players in the story ended up not even mattering at all. And in the end, all the clashes between kingdoms didn't even end up mattering. That is what I liked most about the story.

The irony is they introduce this incredible active time lore feature. I was using it throughout the game, reading and getting backstory. And once you get to the final chapters you realize none of it really mattered because of the direction the story went.

And the final battle almost gave me an epileptic seizure my goodness gracious.

Anyway, I'm glad I played the game I guess, and I think it was a high quality production that I just didn't like as a game. It seems this is the direction the mainline titles of this series is going to go these days, so I guess I need to accept that to get the RPG fix I crave these days it just isn't going to be FF anymore unless it's remakes.

Yeah, regarding towards the end of the game
that was my biggest disappointment as well. Introduction of Ultima and realizing the game would be drifting more and more towards that as everything before it became pretty unimportant rather abruptly and it really lost my interest. I went from being pretty interested to wanting it to end.
. Strong agree.

Once again you're lying and misrepresenting the game, you said standard non-boss encounter has been a button masher. Well guess what, that's the case with every final fantasy. Hell, for 15 you can just hold attack the entire time. Except that 16 has an amazing array of bosses that are really fun to fight.

Why work overtime to bullshit about a game? Like if you don't like it why are you obsessed about it?

Yeah

Reading about the epic battles in the lore, all the kingdoms histories. How different kingdoms were making tactical moves on one another. Building up the leaders of each kingdom. And then it's like we're going to clean slate and pivot to this whole other aspect of the plot. Honestly, I think the story would've been so much more interesting if they never introduced Ultima.

I'm 50h in and I'm loving so far, can't remember the last time I enoyed so much a game for such amount of time. The most outstanding achievement to me is the cast, I just like every character. Good job, Creative Business Unit III!
Right now i'm skipping the hunts leaving them for the endgame or the ng+ but i'm doing all the side quests, they are pretty basic and boring for the most part but many of them have nice development for secondary characters so at least I'm happy to aim for 100%.
I hope to see more games set in this universe

Another thing I disliked about the game.

You have 3 abilities you can equip with 2 skills each. Yet you have so many abilities to learn. So if you want to use different skills you need to constantly swap in and out, which is annoying and tedious as hell, even with the ability to respec it doesn't make it any less tedious.

But then you realize you don't even need to swap in and out because there's really no strengths and weaknesses system in the combat to speak of. No emphasis in elemental advantages and such. So it doesn't matter at all what your skills are. As long as you perfect dodging, just hammer away until you stagger.

There's next to no strategy in this game at all. The entire ability system feels totally wasted.

Every battle against the bosses is the same damn thing. Use your abilities, hack away at him, dodge, use the passive skills until your abilities recharge, then use them again. The same 6 skills over and over and over and over again. Not worrying about any strategy whatsoever.

I'm passed bahamut and doing the filler quests again. How much longer do I have left? I think I'm pretty much done with it.

There was so much spectacle in that bahamut fight that I was just numb. Its like I'd rather watch it as an anime sometimes. There's just so much going on I think they should have dialled it back a bit and it would have been so much more effective.

Incredible soundtrack though. Absolutely amazing.
Just past Bahamut, I think 60% if u are doing sidequests and 70% if u dont.

The strategy is that if u are a good player and know how to chain the abillities u can kill a boss or change phase on one stagger.

The only purpose of all the Eikon abilities in the game is for you to just cycle through them during combat to deal as much damage as possible (which is still not much even when upgraded and mastered). Most of this game's combat is extremely underdeveloped and dumb, but it looks cool, which I'm sure was the only thing they cared about to achieve. You can't even have all Eikon abilities available to you all the time, cuz there's more that 3. And yeah, I already talked about strategy, elemental weaknesses etc. - all of this is just not in the game and it should be.

All you do in combat is cycle through and use all the abilities, swing pathetic swords, dodge / counter attack and suffer while waiting for cooldowns to finish, rinse and repeat. That's all there is to the combat in this game. The game never changes wheter you've got new sword, gear or Eikon ability, it always stays the same and they never let you grow more powerful, only to stay the same all the time no matter how much of the game you've played. It's very, very unsatisfying for a game such as this, especially if you'll compare it to DMC and Bayonetta and you should, cuz it borrows a lot from these games and do absolutely nothing to even be at the same level at least, quite the opposite.

Last half of the story was a bit of a drag. Ending was ... I mean it made sense but not a fan of it. Overall it was a very good time. 8/10 for me.

Stopped doing sidequests after like 70% of main story.. it was the best decision I made. Sidequests were a chore and bringing overall experience down for me.

Elemental weakness is pointless imo, all it does is limit what you can use.

I just got Stranger of Paradise: FF Origins since it was 20$ for Prime Day. The fact even Chaos Nioh has basic things you would expect in FF that's missing in 16 kind of baffled me.
Yes it's beyond disappointing for sure.

I never would have fathomed that they would drop such a thing.

I find it strange that haters gives so much time and effort to a game which they dislike, it's chucklesome actually. Coming here everyday and trying their level best to put their needless points which no one gives a shit about.
They can't even state a proper answer what they don't like about that critics and users are praising this game through core.

Don't get me wrong, I am mostly enjoying the game. But it's this generations Dragon's Lair or Space Ace, Some of the QTE battles are so over the top. The music is amazing. I'm so conflicted with this game.
But where are the secrets, the puzzles, actual party members, and that exploration the franchise is known for. I really would love to see the version that didn't fit on the retail disc. I appreciate the mature nature, swear words etc. Is this really going to be the main line direction?

These sides quests are worse than Warcraft fetch quests. Forcing these into the main story quest really kills the pace too, it's almost criminal. The game still wins out though.

Yeah, I'm mostly enjoying the game but I find it at the same time disappointing. I find it so annoying that they have all of these doors that you can't open. This game is such a fake open world-ish/area game. You can really see it's mmo roots.

Spent tonight doing a bunch of notorious marks on the hunt board. I think I finished 7-8 of them(I cheated and looked up their locations). The flan prince gave me the most trouble. I actually died the first time trying to spam and brute force it, and it slapped the shit out of me. 2nd time I only used 1 potion and beat it pretty handily. I’m probably about 30hrs into the game and still really enjoying it. Tbh I’m only doing ‘+’ sidequests and I don’t bother with trash mobs.

This game one of the most satisfying parrying systems around (4th eikon feat). The feedback and reward feels even better than metal gear rising.
Feels so nice to nail one immediately chain into the built in 3 hit counter attack.

And I love the way some of the abilities can be used to parry and counter producing a more enhanced version ability.
The Jojo's style rapid punches feel so good to nail. And the 2nd eikon's kick which turns into a DMC style spinning heel attack.

speaking of which, very smart of them to give that ability to the 2nd eikon to give you a taste of parrying.
and also the first eikon's ranged drive slash which also acts as magic parry is very cool for the same reason.

The flan enemy is such interesting enemy, completely fucked with me the first time I encountered it, has such a unique moveset and super strange tells.

And all of this is completely worthless, doing fuck all damage and not changing a thing during fights. What's even the point in nailing all these counters, parries so on and so forth if you can't do more damage if the game is not allowing you too cuz it was deliberatly designed in such a way, that you just can't grow in power more than the game allows you to which is +5/10 to something at best. I was hoping that after upgrading the most expensive lightning skill I'll do more damage, but all it does is to cheap but a sliver of HP 2 times instead of 1.

I guess if you like to fight stupid enemies and bosses with trillions of HP and see damage numbers for hundreds of hours and doing flashy moves over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again, which are doing fuck all but look cool, I guess this game is for you. But for everyone else, who likes to use their brain, who likes much more deep and varied combat system, think stratigicaly and not just cycle through flashy moves, skills and press X millions of times, this game is complete and total garbage from a pure gameplay standpoint.

I think I'm done with this game. After killing Hugo (which was way too long of a fight and wasn't even fun) it's same old shit again - go back to shitty hub and do boring side quest. I'm done.

I don't think I've ever spammed through dialogue with any game like I have with this game.

The side quests are an insult 😆
I'm did the same with every single side quest and boring hub shit after each story mission.

Customising my Loadout a bit more now that I've mastered several skills.

In trying to set up one eikon for bosses and one for fodder, I like the idea of using the 2nd eikon launcher and comboing into a good aerial ability, not sure what's the best one though. I haven't used aerial combat as much as I want, so will see how I can optimise that.

What are you even talking about lol. It literally does do much damage, parry enhanced attacks are often substantially stronger than their normal ones.

It's quite simple. Parring is satisfying, and both the feedback and the enhanced counters they allow you to perform are a great implementation of the system.

If you can't wrap your brain around that, then maybe the game is a bit too complicated for you 😂
