Foldable iPhone to Cost ~$1,000 More Than Today's Pro Max - (Probably one gazillion with tariffs)

Absolutely Cozy

According to a new post from the Weibo user known as "Instant Digital," Apple's first foldable ‌iPhone‌ will likely cost between $2,100 and $2,300—just a little more than Samsung's high-end foldable.
[...]

For comparison, the iPhone 16 Pro Max starts at $1,199, but when configured with 1TB of storage that increases to $1,599. This means that Apple's first foldable will still be around $1,000 more expensive than the current flagship ‌iPhone‌.

There are a growing number of insightful reports about Apple's long-rumored foldable iPhone; it is now expected to launch as soon as next year.

This is incredibly exciting! I love seeing new tech from Tim Apple. :messenger_open_mouth:

It's also rumored to be crease-free. I didn't know that it was possible to make those kinds of displays already. I hope we'll get a grease-free screens someday for my filthy fingers.

There's also a rumoured foldable iPad coming, but iPadOS is so boring that we shouldn't discuss it on principle.

5.49" outer display for a $2k foldable!? Sounds about right coming from Apple. It's only exciting to iphone users. Foldables have been around since 2018. I doubt Apple will do anything innovative at best they'll come up with some marketing buzz word like "retina display" to describe the crease but anyways welcome to the party. Is this launching this year or 2026?

It's sad to see the innovation died with Jobs. They're just a me-too company these days.

If this turns out to be a real thing, I'm sure it will be fine. Also, very few people will care.

Phones are pretty much over for me now. I didn't bother getting a new phone when an upgrade was available earlier this year. The first time I've used the same phone for more than 2 years ever and I feel zero compulsion to upgrade. Making them ridiculously expensive won't force my hand.

I just don't understand why the hell anyone wants a foldable phone anyway. If you just get the slightest amount of dirt where it hinges, boom, you've got scratches or worse.

There is no way i will buy a phone at that price with my current salary; even if my boss were to pay me 1k more / month from tomorrow I would still not buy that.
I could imagine that many people feel the same way.

Demo'd the razr and Samsung fold at a local bestbuy ended up sticking with iPhone, those folding phones are still too heavy, and thick. My expectations for the iFold are low.

A lot of negative people here.
Yes Samsung beat them, that's kind of their thing. Get in first so their fans can claim they were first.

Apple prefers to wait until it's better quality. I personally don't want foldable but I'm definitely interested to see if they can truly get it crease free.

I've only seen one or two foldable in the wild but I think my wife would be interested if it's done well.

The only "foldable phone" I've ever used that wasn't terrible was the Surface Duo - and that's largely because it's basically two phones with a hinge.

Just an FYI Samsung probably has the worst foldable on the market. OnePlus, Google, Vivo, Honor, Xiaomi Oppo, Huawei have better foldables with an actual usable outer display, thinner, lighter, better cameras and less visible crease. Not sure why you'd compare a future foldable iPhone with the worst foldable on the market, also Samsung was not the first foldable on the market.

Maybe it's just where I live but it's generally just Samsung or iPhone.
You see the odd other brand mixed in occasionally, but nobody really cares.

And because of that I used Samsung as, at least from my perspective, they are the biggest competition.

foldable why?

I still use my iphone 11 that I bought mny years ago from ebay. works like a charm.. has everything I would ever need on it including a good camera.

My biggest problem with those foldable phones is how thick they are when they are folded. Like two phones glued together. Apple will probably announce the iphone 17 "air", the thinnest iphone yet, although they are limited to the size of the usb-c outlet. Skip that, make it just rechargable via induction, and you could go sizes we´ve never seen before. Then use this as a base for the foldable phone.

Looks at my iPhone 13 Pro still being perfectly fine:

Earliest possible date to switch would be Jan 2027 when I will have by phone for 5 years, not switching earlier.

What is the point for removing extra 0.05mm? It's going thinner for the sake of it. I would much rather eliminate bezels in order not to make the phone larger, since this is way more problematic e.g. in a running shorts pocket than the thickness.

What are you talking about!? the thinnest foldable is less than 1 mm thicker than the iPhone 16 Pro max. 2 phones glued together would be about 17-18mm the thinnest foldable is 8.93mm.

I don't see the allure of a modern foldable phone, either. But I also have my iPad with me pretty much all the time so if I need a screen bigger than my phone for something I just pull that out of my backpack. I guess I can see why some people would prefer a foldable phone over a tablet in a backpack, though.

I walked down the flip phone route recently and I switched it out for a Samsung S25+ as soon as the pre-orders went up. It's a neat gimmick and draws attention at first but for my personal use case I prefer ol reliable a flat rectangular phone without a crease in the middle.

iPhones are boring to me and don't have anything over a good Android.

The real innovation at Apple is happening at the chip level and their laptops.

The MacBook Air is one of the best deals you can get in terms of cost/performance and display quality.

Their Mac Minis are also an amazing deal.
