GAF, I haven’t completed a JRPG since the amazing FFVIII. I want to try and get back into the genre. Please recommend me an XSX/PS5 JRPG.

I want to shout out the recent indie JRPG Beyond Galaxyland

The protagonist is high school age but that doesn't really play into it at all. It's turn based, with a cool look and lots of gameplay variety.

MudoSkills

Volcano High Alumnus (Cum Laude)
Metaphor is really fantastic. You're initially at school in SMT Nocturne, but the entire world is destroyed in the first 15 minutes and you end up killing your friends, so very much not a Persona style high-school RPG.

Darkmakaimura

Can You Imagine What SureAI Is Going To Do With Garfield?
Phantasy Star series. I don't think there's any schools involved or children. The first one is definitely about adults. I can't remember if there was any school stuff in the rest of them but I don't think there was.

My top pick for you is FFX Remaster

Then the criminally underrated:

The Last Remnant Remaster
Sea of Stars
Lost Odyssey

and:

FFIX
Xenogears

Only recommend last 2 emulated, XG text speed patch is legit and FFIX Battle performance is absolutely rancid on PlayStation.

They don't make them like this anymore.

Trilobit

Absolutely Cozy
Rules:

It can’t be centered around kids or school
Prefer classic turn based
Prefer not open world

I have extended time off work because of an injury. So length isn’t much of an issue.

I have Metaphor in my Amazon cart right now overnight shipped for $50. Should I just go with that?

Also, are there any cool mature JRPG’s with blood or gore? I know that isn’t typical.

Thanks GAF

If you can get a hold of a Nintendo DS I'd recommend Mario & Luigi for GBA. Great game and it's an RPG made in Japan.

-Turn Based
-World Map, not Open World
-Set in a dystopian world where the world is polluted and everyone lives in a giant tower city that is build around an air purifier

Traversing the world map is done by moving an icon across a hexagonal grid.

xk3iTif.png

Light-Grey spaces need to be unlocked by placing modules that fit into the grid, like puzzle pieces. there are plain ones and ones that give the area they are placed at special modifiers.
when moving your cursor across dangerous spaces on the grid there is a chance to get a random encounter, while on safe spaces you won't get random encounters.

there are also places you enter run around in, like dungeons and parts of the city where shops are etc.
UxLQ8yW.png

Weapon Upgrades, like unlocking the map, also has Puzzle elements.

V8RS4rU.png

you buy or find parts, and these parts have certain fittings that fit onto other parts. in the image above is a what a well modified weapon can look like "pie_tears_joy:
yea, that dude put a dozen or so barrels on his gun, and 2 hand grips... and a bunch of scopes.
all those parts affect the stats you see at the bottom (how fast you lock onto enemies, how far away you can be until it gets too slow to lock on etc.

the Combat is both turn based, but also has a real time element.

9BA07E61B079B8E682BF14B8BD764E2D04C0ED68

you either stand still and shoot at an enemy, or you can spend a hero point (the orange things on the bottom) to run in a straight line of your choosing across the arena.
while standing and charging your attacks, enemies can move and even attack, and thereby counter you.
you can throw them into the air by hitting them while being on the ground, and bounce them against the floor once they are airborne by jumping and hitting them. or you can just juggle them as long as possible.

there's also 2 types of damage, the blue "Scratch" damage, and direct damage. once the health or shield bar of an enemy is damaged by scratch damage (blue bar) and they get hit by direct damage, the entire blue part of the bar will be taken away in an instant.

these are the basics I guess... there's more to it all but this doesn't need to turn into a guide lol

dank, how come i forgot about this

The last good JRPG I completed was Unicorn Overlord. There is a demo, so you can try it out :) (There is also a demo for Fantazio)

Go for Ff12.

It's a delight to play and the characters, VA, world, music are just great.
Everything is so polished. Probably highest production values in a FF still to this day.

Yakuza Like a Dragon. <-- Mature theme, mature situations, awesome turn based combat and job systems.
Plus if you love it (and you liked FF9 better than FF8 so clearly you have superb taste) you can roll into the sequel right away.
Came here to say this. FF8 is my fave of all time, followed by Like a Dragon, Lunar SSSC, Star Ocean 2, and Persona 3.

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
Digital Devil Saga 1-2
Seconding those.

They have it all: nice cast of characters, amazing ost, grim-dark atmosphere with a lot of hindu visuals and themes, nice story with my twists, good old press-turn battle system that's imo among the best turn-based battle systems while also offering a nice challenge... Just great games, go play them.

Rare theme, and all team using guns, breaking monotone which usually using melee, especially swords. Along with wild arms, i rarely see rpg with guns at the time. I think koudelka as well, might be wrong though. I forgot how koudelka is using guns.

I’m a few hours into DQ11. I know it’s a 100+ hour journey but man is it starting off slow.

The game picked up a lot for me probably around 10 hours in, maybe a little less, not sure. Basically after the long tutorials ended. DQ11 has some of the most charming world building I've seen in an RPG. Really fun, enjoyable game in the latter 90%, and one thing that always stands out to me is how charming and unique all the towns you encounter look. A lot of RPGs - like Octopath Traveler, even though the towns are all a bit different themed and look a bit different, they just kinda blend in. But the theming in DQ11 towns was just such a joy to find each new town! And the system gets pretty deep as you go on, you have access to all your party members each fight so you can get some pretty crazy tactics and it never felt grindy to me.

Late Edit: If I had to say something less positive about it - perhaps it almost feels like a Nintendo game in its purity and innocence/child-like appeal. So not really the same vibes as FFVIII afaik. If it's not what you're in the mood for, I don't know if it will hit those same highs, perhaps shelf it for when the mood strikes for something colorful and cartoony, but still quite engaging.

FFIX is amazing on PC with mods now days. It’s the same with FFVII. The upscaling is crazy good and there are a ton of QoL changes and improvements.

Metaphor has a demo so at least try before you buy.

There’s so many making rpgs since ff8 that I wouldn’t start with one that’s $60+. Get Dragon Quest 11 or Like a Dragon.

I am around 21-22 hours into DQ11. I actually just bought a Portal today so I can play on the comfort of my couch. I think I am at the end of Act 1. Game seems to have just started picking up story wise. Not a big fan of the world so far. Or the gameplay loop. Way too much back and forth, which I understand is a given in an RPG. I'm sure I'll finish it but my next one will need to be a lot shorter or more captivating.

Like a Dragon series. Not the original Yakuza games, just play Like a Dragon. Its modern era JRPG to the extreme.

I can vouch for this. Great game. Even got a platinum trophy in it. Strays away from the typical youth high school drama. We need more JRPGs like this.

If Tri-Ace made a sequel to this one, I'd be all over it. Certified cult classic.

fun fact,
the original non-HD japanese version (End of Eternity) had super simple achievements. literally just finishing each chapter.

they made more varied ones specifically for the western release.

I found that really interesting 😅
I bet that came from the fact that in japan, achievements weren't that much of a big deal at the time, because the PS3 was late to the party both to come to market and to implement trophies.
2009 was when Sony made them mandatory, when the 360 already had them for 3+ years, so the game was already well into development before their main target platform had an achievement system

Y'know, this just makes me yearn to see more JP developers tackle more "alternative" or "mature"-ish JRPGs. A vast majority of them seem to thematically center around high school students or such.

Would be a pleasure to see more JRPGs in the vein of Koudelka or something like that.

Tales of arise. I’m kind of new to JRPG. But I really like the real-time combat in Tales of arise. I hate the dialogue at times though. But damn I love when the characters do their combo attacks. First 2 hours of the game had me bored as shit but once your picks up pace it’s a good RPG.

I wanna say I’m gonna play octopath traveller next ( started playing it on GPU but changed my mind and started playing the gunk) but Really I already know I’m gonna start playing system shock once I finish tales….

But yeah… try tails of arise. The dialogue is a bit cheesy at times but the combat is nice. And the game has some some beautiful locales, if I’m to be honest.

Just get back to the roots

final-fantasy-pixel-remaster-cjx9496cw%20(1)-bo8fmmcad.jpg

I bought these in the xmas sale on Xbox. I dunno when I’m gonna play them. I just felt like it’s one of those collections you just HAVE to own as a gamer. It’s a peice of gaming history. I bought all the castlevania collections for the same reason.

I’ve always wanted to try vagrant story. I missed the boat with that one but I remember it being a game that had some of the finest visuals on PS1. I just wasnt
into JRPGs at the time. Would love to give a try nowadays though.

I thought about this for way too long but here is the definitive list ...

Dragon Quest 11
Chained Echoes
Dead or Alive Beach Volleyball

Anyone who is at all into 90s JRPGs owes it to themselves to play through Xenogears and Final Fantasy Tactics at least once.

I played Tactics on the PSone but never played Xenogears. Seems like it’s around 50-60 hours, I will check it out if I can find a way to play it.

Think easiest way is emulation, currently.

If you like FF7 & FF8... Xenogears I'd imagine will be right up your alley.

Chained Echoes, since we have a sequel on the way. Haven't seen anyone else recommend it yet, and it's a GOAT.

Also, FF6 is the best FF. Best story, best main cast, best villain, super mature themes.
