I feel like I have a firm grasp on this year's releases from established bands, but don't really have the time to properly seek out 2009 debuts. To give you an idea of what I'm into, these are my favorite albums of the year so far.

Animal Collective: Merriweather Post Pavilion
Beirut: March of the Zapotec and Realpeople Holland EP's
Black Moth Super Rainbow: Eating Us
Bowerbirds: Upper Air (My favorite album, at the moment)
Danny Norbury: Light In August
Fiery Furnaces: I'm Going Away
Grizzly Bear: Veckatimest
Múm: Sing Along To Songs You Don't Know
Phoenix: Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
St. Vincent: Actor

I've also been listening to a lot of Elliot Smith, Sigur Ros, Max Richter and Efterklang lately.

Based on my taste, does anyone have any recommendations?

Aether released his debut LP at the very tail end of 2008 so I don't think it should matter much.

The whole album sounds like 1990's beat juxtapositions meeting today's advanced sequencing techniques. Really incredible stuff. I can't stop listening to it. If you're a fan of Mum (I am as well); you should really love this!

I'll definitely be checking out Aether and XX based on the recommendations. Based on the samples, Aether is right up my alley.

I already have and enjoy the Fever Ray and Fanfarlo.

Yacht's album is good, it's just not a debut.

I'd dismissed Taken by Trees due to them covering Sweet Child O' Mine. Maybe I was too hasty.

Over the past few years I've really gotten into bands like:

As well as acts like:

In addition to the Finnish acts:

Lau Nau

Does anyone have any suggestions (they don't have to be debuts) that are in the same vein as those bands?

Also Electrik Red - How to be a lady pt 1 for the most ridiculously fun, dirty, smooth, catchy and surprisingly poignant rnb album.

Haha, so many recommendations of the xx, good album.

I'd recommend this Girls - Album, has a lot of good guitar pop songs on it.

And perhaps if you are willing to try something new, the hazy chill-wave buzzband Neon Indian is pretty cool.

The XX is really good. Here are some of my favorite debut's of the year.

The Antlers - Hospice

Such a beautiful CD. For a taste, check out my favorite song off of it "Two". It's haunting and eerie with down pacthes that will blow your skin away when it kicks back in. Such a beautiful album.

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - Up From Below

It's an anthem/folk/acoustic rock album. Sounds good right? A little patchy in places, but I doubt you'll find a better first four songs on any debut from this year. Here's my favorite track, live nontheless!

Fanfarlo - Reservoir

I think you'll really dig this one.

It's a little too Arcade Fire, the singer sounds like a Beirut rip off, but is that really a bad thing? The entire album is filled with energetic and spastic little folk rock diddies that would make both of those bands proud. Here's my favorite track.

Cymbals Eat Guitars - Why There Are Mountains

Now this is an interesting little album. I loved a track or two, but it never really caught on with me as far as an entirety until I saw them perform live. They were fantastic, shitty band name and all. Pitchfork had a live session with them. Here's my favorite track!

Stardeath and White Dwarfs - The Birth

Ever heard of The Flaming Lips? Well, this one is from the nephew of the main singer and it's not half bad. Not perfect, but it's definitely got it's own swa. . .ger and is worth a listen by far. Very spacey, almost progressive rock sound. At the very least, it's got this song, which is fantastic.


Those are the debuts of 09 that I can think of. I know I probably missed some. Hope I helped!

Nope, this is their debut, aside from an EP last year I do believe, they're also fairly young.

I would also like to recommend Girls. I missed them opening up for Los Campesinos! here and I was so devastated. Easily one of my favorite new bands.

The creativity with time signatures, rhythms, guitar work, drums, and seamlessly blending in the electronic samples makes this experimental record one of the best for me this decade. I'd even put it as the top album of my life so far, as far as the creative impact it has had on my playing and how I view music.

It's all instrumental.

Bruce Peninsula. You should know by now that most indie bands from Canada are awesome (Destroyer, Sunset Rubdown, Constantines, New Pornographers, etc) and these guys are no different. Listen to Steamroller, they have a pretty cool sound. Imagine the Constantines with backup singers from some Rap group providing vocal melodies and such.

I also second Fanfarlo, and Cymbals Eat Guitars. The Antlers had a great EP/mini album before Hospice called In the Attic of the Universe, you should get both of those if you check them out.

edit: Also the XX is very good. Watch the videos too, the kids look ridiculous.

Damn. That's a friggin fantastic debut album, going by that song. Very progressive stuff...very Dream Theater-ish, without the awful DT vocals. More creative than DT overall, with the great introduction of electronic and acoustic melodies throughout the song.

Actually, Manners is their debut album. The 08 release you are thinking of was an EP, which the track from Manners "Sleepyhead" also appears.




I also agree about feeling "meh" on The XX, I tired listening to the album but I can't get into it. They just feel like a hype band at this point, like Vampire Weekend or The Black Kids. There are some far better releases that have come out this year that deserve more of that kind of hype.

Actually, this is also not a debut album. They've released two albums before Hospice, Uprooted and In The Attic of The Universe. I suggest checking out In The Attic of The Universe, it also follows a theme just like Hospice, the entire album just blends together so well.

Haha...I know the drummer, Nate Donmoyer, quite well...or did in highschool. Played briefly in a band with him.

Thanks for the animals as leaders reccomendation. Heard the first minute and a half and turned it off to go find it on amazon.

Tosin Abasi wrote and recorded all of the guitars (7 string and 8 string), and one other person programmed the drums and all of the electronic ambiance going on in the background. They have a band together for a tour, and I can't wait to see this stuff played live.
