The official Facebook page for Ghostbusters revealed today that 1984 paranormal comedy may be on its way back to theaters. A trailer was posted which revealed to fans that we should expect to see Bill Murray and the gang back up on the big screen sometime in October.
According to Ain't it Cool News , this may be a ploy from the studio to gauge how much audience interest remains in the franchise, and if they should grant Dan Aykroyd's wish of greenlighting a third installment.
The announcement itself was light on details. The number and location of theaters, and a window for screening dates remain a mystery. Given that the posted video recycles the film's original theatrical trailer, it is tough to gauge how much attention Sony is giving this re-release.
Update: THR is reporting that Ghostbusters will hit 500 theaters across the U.S. on October 13th, 20th and 27th. Certain theaters in Canada and international markets will also be treated to the re-release. The screenings will feature a digital 2K print of the film with 5.1 surround sound.
Rory Bruer, Sony President of worldwide distribution was quoted by THR as saying, "We're delighted to be bringing Ghostbusters back to the big screen this is a special celebration of the movie, giving the fans a chance to see it on the big screen in perfect digital presentation. As we head towards Halloween, we ain't afraid of no ghosts, but just the same, we're glad that everyone's favorite paranormal eliminators are on the case."
