God of War 2018 and Ragnarok are way overrated

I realize that it's a spicy thread premise but I hope that at least it grabbed your attention.

Now, before I move on, let me be clear - those are perfectly fine games. I don't really have any major complaints about them beyond the fact that I'm just not into them. If you're into the sort of experience that they're offering, then I'm sure you're gonna have a great time.

My main problem with these games is that they're way too focused on everything except what used to make this series great.

They're long, they take forever to get anywhere, the combat is a slog, the story is pretentious, and watching the behind-the-scenes footage makes the creators of the game seem way too preoccupied with the notion that they're creating some form of high-brow art. But personally, the story being told in this game resonated with me about as much as a loud fart resonates inside of my toilet bowl.

You know what I used to love about God of War? The fact that as soon as I put the disc into my console, it greeted me with a title screen that immediately got my blood pumping:



It's the fact that as soon as you pressed the Start button, a really pissed off Kratos made sure to let you know that you're in for a mean ride, and you don't wanna be there once he starts passing tickets around. Those classic games didn't fuck around. They told great, heroic tales too, but they never spent more time dishing out the plot than it was necessary and you spent most of the time curb stomping monsters and wearing their entrails like a necklace. It was a pure, unapologetic, testosterone-fueled power fantasy, and its main concern was to make sure that you have a raging power-boner the entire time while playing.

And what do we have in those new games? A 45-hour journey following an elderly man and his soy boy son as they endlessly walk through forgettable forests and mountains and engage in small-scale battles with a limited number of monster types.

Now, to be fair, there are some epic moments here and there. However, the overall emphasis on emotional storytelling over balls-to-the-wall action and gory combat felt severely underwhelming for me. While the story may be engaging for those who appreciate it, there isn't much replay value after completing it once. I struggled to finish a second playthrough of the 2018 game in preparation for Ragnarok, and by the time I got to Ragnarok, I was utterly exhausted with the gameplay style and simply pushed through it to reach the end. I doubt I will ever revisit this game when I could instead replay God of War 2, which remains a high point in the series for me.

So yeah, happy for everyone involved in the making of that game, glad that Chris Judge had his moment on stage, but I don't really care about those games.

indie game vs 3rd person cinematic game.

I like the old gow because of its stylish combat. Current GOW is more like RD2. Only issue is the locked camera which is horrible for a game like this.

I think the same about the original trilogy, especially GOW 3, i much prefer GOW 2018 even if it's not THAT great

Nope they are fantastic games.

I would argue that the original GOW games overrated.
You say they put the gameplay first.... except the gameplay is a dumbed down combat engine featuring imprecise combat, a dodge that literally lacks iframes, and bad alternative weapons, not to mention annoying QTEs.
They're fun to play, but it's 80% nostalgia. The old gameplay got stale and boring by the time GOW3 came out.

Modern GOW has far better gameplay than classic GOW.

I prefer the Greek mythology trilogy as well, but it was clear after Ascension that the series needed a shakeup. But now I think we are in need of another shakeup, cause the highs weren’t as good, and it lacked the emotional punch of the OG series, Ragnarok felt like a walk in the park (apocalyptic wise) compared to the events of GoW3.

They did get a number of things right though, like the axe and spear. Previous GoW games tried other weapons but they never stuck for me.

Hopefully Kratos gets his balls reattached for the next iteration.
 
I really do not like the over the shoulder camera view of the new games lol. You can tell the enemies are just standing around when they're not in view and I agree with the fights feeling like a slog. I wish we got a new GOW in the same vein as dmc5. Straight action with some story sprinkled in.

I haven't played Ragnarok yet, but I played through 2018 last year on my PS5. It is at least in the top 2 most overrated games of all time, in my opinion.

The "puzzles" are child's play, the story is incredibly inconsistent, and the choice to keep the camera so close to Kratos while enemies can attack from all directions is simply annoying, rather than challenging. Not too mention how absolutely boring traversal is in the game. It feels like it was made for idiots, by way of a Marvel Studios executive.

Which explains why it's so popular; people are idiots.

I Can see why some folks like them. For me…. They both get a big ol scoop of meh. Fun enough for a playthrough, but not again.

There are side missions.
The exploration is way better, and actually exists
The Crater.
The story is way better
The characters are way deeper and more fleshed out
The production values are way higher
The graphics are way prettier
The Blades of Chaos feel way better and heavier
The Leviathan Axe is amazing
Thor is the best villain in the series, and Ragnarok probably has the best portrayal of Thor in media.
Odin > Zeus
The camera is WAY, WAY better than that fixed shit in the OG trilogy

Gow and Ragnarok are objectively better games as soon as you get over the reduced gore and scale.

I can see why some would say they’re overrated. I personally really liked the new ones tho - and I don’t feel anyone else is visually bringing mythology to life in such an interesting way. Very different from the og trilogy

I see what you're saying and understand but this was a good change for me. The old games weren't really my thing. 6-7/10 for me while the newer games were sold 8s. I also see why old Assassin Creed fans are mad about the new titles but the newer games are better imo than everything else besides ACII. It sucks that in order to gain new fans, old fans get a raw deal.

Gow Ascension was peak Gow combat from a design perspective. Trials of archimedes were wicked!

The old style god of war games were button mashers whereas the newer titles are more methodical and blend souls-like mechanics with character action mechanics.

It comes down to personal preference because both are brilliantly executed but I much prefer the new style.

Failure to iterate on and revamp old formulas would only result in fatigue and stagnation setting in as we have seen with multiple high profile gaming franchises over the years. While the new style might not 100% appeal to the hardcore fans of the old games the new ones have brought in a huge new audience.

It's funny because people complain when games end up being iterative but yet when we end up getting something entirely new those same people are quick to put on their nostalgia glasses and bemoan how things aren't the same anymore.

But I agree that the originals are more fun, anyway.

I found fallen order's combat to be nowhere near as good as GOW's. FO is floaty and, for lack of a better word, sloppy. Never had a problem with the camera in GOW personally, you just have to pay particular attention to your positioning and spacing. Also, I'm not saying it's 100% "souls-like" in it's make up, far from it, just that the reboot clearly took inspiration and elements from that formula.

I've never played Ascension to be fair but I was done with that style of game after GOW3. Unless I'm misremembering I thought the reception for Ascension pretty much confirmed it was time for something new/different to be done with the franchise?

If it runs well on RPCS3 then I'll find a used copy and check it out to see if there were any meaningful differences in the combat compared to the earlier entries.

I didn't care for 2018 as much, but Ragnarok was great (in part because it was able to leverage the work put in by 2018 for some great payoffs)

I still love God of War though I do think the Norse saga is nowhere near the Greek saga

I can't think of another big IP game in the last 15 years that drastically pivoted from its core gameplay with such success. The gameplay loop is addicting and very satisfying
The Legend of Zelda, Yakuza, and Resident Evil are obvious examples (and Zelda at least is a bigger success at it too)

After trying some limited Sony titles on PC I have to agree about GoW in general, the franchise just isn't for me. I didn't even play for that many hours before I realised I just didn't want to play anymore. They are bloody well crafted games though.

Combat in the second one at least exists.

GOD OF WAR 2018 was too animation driven often rupper banding your foes to you and choosing direction BY IT SELF. That alone kills it as a game.
If that is how you like your action games go ahead continue to shape the industry into piece of crap with your tastes.

Also....one shot camera is limiting at best, takes you out more often than not due to animation just glitching into a cut scene cos animation blending is just awful


Yes. It is overrated.

This pretty much sums up what I think about GOW 2018 and modern take on GOW in general:



I haven't bought Ragnarok and haven't played it. I know it's better somewhat, but also even worse and very simmilar to 2018 in some aspects. I'm considering trade in a few games to get it, but it's far from being on the top of my priority list right now.

Sony has earned the faith from fans by consistently delivering. They get cut more slack than others cause of that.

I hate Sony’s business policies but their games are always awesome
