GTA 6 shouldn't arrive on PC until 2027, says former Rockstar technical director

In a post on X, Obbe Vermeij, a former Rockstar developer and technical director for GTA 4, hinted that GTA 6’s PC version might not be released until 2027. Vermeij further suggested that GTA 6 could sell for “10+ years” and face “no competition to worry about.” He also mentioned that Rockstar won’t release the game until they are “100% happy” with it, adding, “No matter what it said in the trailer.”

2027 for you I'm afraid.

In the days of the trilogy, the console sales were so much bigger it was a no brainer. Now it’s a bit less obvious. The advantage of a simultaneous release would be that the publisher only needs to do one marketing campaign. That’s a big expense.A staggered release has the advantage that the team can focus on one release at a time. The pc release is quite different with mouse controls, extra gameplay features and a range of hardware. It also means the testers’ workload is spread out.I would think doing a simultaneous release is also risky. The pc version tends to have a bunch of technical issues because of all the different configurations (memory, processor, gfx card). These issues may give the game a reputation for being buggy. This would probably taint the console version even if that’s clean. For gta5 the gap was 18 months. I’m sure they would love to shorten that for gta6 as it sucks for pc players. On the other hand, the game will sell for a long time, they aren’t going to rush it.

This suggests that while the console version might aim for a 2025 release, there could still be delays, as Rockstar has a history of pushing back release dates for their games. Although there’s no official announcement or release date for the PC version, it’s likely that, based on Rockstar’s previous launches, the PC version might come much later, as seen with GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2.

Do we think it's physicallg possible for this to have more advanced physics not seen in a game of this magnitude before now? Like say the best soft body physics around for vehicles or accurate water sims.

Though I think the latter would add less to the experience and gameplay than the former, I really hope for that as I've always been fascinated with it.

It would also be good if stealth was expanded and kinda hitman esque where you can talk to people to get through places without killing anyone, but it sounds like a control nightmare.

Rockstar has the technical expertise to push boundaries. You can do it.

Seems like the PS5 Pro is the definitive machine for the rest of the generation, feel bad for PC gamers who spend 2k+ to play stutter shitfests and not get the biggest games for a couple of years when these games are relevant.
The PS5 Pro might look like a powerhouse now, but let’s be real—consoles always hit a wall. PC gamers might struggle with unoptimized messes, but at least we can strip down the machine, tweak it, and push it past whatever ceiling a console’s locked under.

The real tragedy isn’t missing out on "relevant" games for a year or two—it’s being stuck in a cycle, playing someone else’s definition of what’s enough. When the PS5 Pro is outdated in a few years, the PC crowd will still be tearing through the future.

Funny how so many other studios with much less funding than Rockstar can somehow still manage a simultaneous console + PC release.

Rockstar can. They just don’t want to. The difference between GTA and most games is that when other games take too long, they fall into irrelevance. Rockstar can release GTA VI on PC 4 years after consoles if they want, it’ll still sell a lot and they’ll even catch a bunch of double dippers.

I'm not trolling, i just find the PC gamer crowd an insufferable bunch that got really insecure about the PS5 Pro, i'm just giving a little bit of truth to them.
Bro your being just as insufferable if not more so :messenger_tears_of_joy:, it's easy to fall into that trap of ill give 'em a taste of their medicine but we got to try to rise above that shit.

Yeah, so trolling. The irony of your post is almost palpable.

That's the goal, but always telling the truth and only the truth.
Yeah GTA 5 was pretty much dead and forgotten by 2015.

Would rather wait then play a gimped version of the game. Playing FF16 is amazing on PC. Rebirth will be too.
This is a Rockstar game though, they're sadly known for having multiple better versions of their games in the very first incarnation.

All their PS2 games, GTA V PS4/One release being downgraded post-updates, only fixed by PC version and recently current-gen and they haven’t even bothered porting the current gen RT and AA features to the PC version.

RDR2 also massively downgraded post-updates, but unlike GTA V they shipped on PC its compromised version:

Same reason R* usually downgrades their single player games.. their damn Multiplayer modes. It's the most infuriating shit ever, especially when downgrades get later ported on more powerful machines.
@SkyHighTrees Add draw distance and AO to the list, massive difference for both.

AO difference is absolutely awful for characters especially:

But in general game had a unique pre-rendered quality thanks to it which is not there anymore.

And what's worse to me is draw distance, as you said LOD management was jaw dropping in 1.00 with practically non-existent pop-in, when any version after display tons of missing trees/shadows all over the place.

I mean look behind the characters, it's insane:

If they won't ship GTA VI with its Multiplayer Mode already included there's a very good chance it will be later downgraded as their previous games, one of those instances you really want to keep a disc 1.00 version.

PC for the last 15 years has always had way more games than modern consoles

we "miss" out on 1 big game and get a far superior version in a year and we have 200+ more other exclusives that consoles will never get to play in the meantime

the 9th generation (except for Nintendo) is the worst console generation in history, imagine spending 500$-700$ on a console with 14 exclusives in half a decade, it is utterly pathetic how these large multimedia companies get away with putting out garbage products that their rabid fanbases will simp over.

nah we're mad that people will continue purchasing and defending inferior products, price to performance and ability PC's have been far superior to Sony and Microsoft consoles for a long time. when consoles and gaming as a whole were at their peek during the 7th and early 8th generation consoles were worth investing into and pc players missed out on a ton of generation-defining games during that generation but also had their own unique indy/MMO games

software exclusivity, in-house studios, and healthy competition is what made previous console generations so great

Funny how so many other studios with much less funding than Rockstar can somehow still manage a simultaneous console + PC release.

Funny how most of them seem to end up with all sorts of issues as well and have far less complicated games than what Rockstar develops.

It is far easier to design for fixed hardware than to release on a suite of PC configurations and live up to the standards of the PC consumers.

Bro thinks that PC gamers actually play games. We just buy them at deep discount (cause we sensible) or Day 1 (cause we rich) and let them rot in our libraries because I have more pressing concerns like replying on GAF and watching VR Porn while keeping Chrome tabs open having 3 affairs with 7 different lesbians and a midget on several different dating apps; both my wife and gf know. I have 4 games running in the background tab since 2017. One of them is GTA5, another Sex with Hitler, emulated Knack because GOTG and Pokemon Gold because fuck Nintendo. PC gamers are versatile. Imagine playing games 😂 when you could be watching DF and ridicule pixel counts, think console AI integration is superior and play on 15 FPS.

Look in the mirror, you're insufferable in almost every PC related thread with your gloating and shitposting.

I like GTA its great, I played them all but 5 didnt do it for me like it did the masses. I much prefer the tone of GTA 4 rather than the cheeky chappy/edgelord tone of 5. I am looking forward to playing 6 100% but I jist know it will be more like 5 with added woke fun. Im more looking forward to it getting out there so they can start on Woke Dead Redemption 3 so I might get to play it before im to old.

Delicious. That will give PS fanboys longer to fear the looming arrival of the definitive version, and experience FOMO all the while they are playing it.
