Handheld GAF. Would you recommend the Anbernic RG40XX?

From the reviews I’ve seen on YouTube it seems quite good.
I have a Steamdeck but it’s just a little big to throw into my travel bag.

It's not bad. It wont be able to play every PSP or N64 game at full speed but both are still playable. I have a rg35xx, powkiddy x55, and r36s. Anbernic's build quality is pretty good. There's also the TrimUI Smart Pro which is another great budget device.

Just get an Android phone for about $130

A Motorola is perfect for the job

All the emulators are on the Play Store

That's really inconvenient compared to a 40xx with muOS. Also, you don't get access to Portmaster.

A dedicated handheld with buttons/sticks will always be better than a phone with a clip and a separate controller.

I like the Smart Pro's screen and build quality but CrossMix is iffy and Portmaster games don't always work.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
RG40XX is a good choice and is pretty cheap. It runs Linux and is pretty stable, most everything you play will be through Retroarch. The 4 inch 4:3 screen was a little small for me personally, but if you're looking for something you can toss in a travel bag it's a good choice. I'll second El Muerto El Muerto and say that I usually recommend the TrimUI Smart Pro over this - they're pretty similar devices, but I like the TrimUI form factor better personally.

If you don't mind paying slightly more, the new Miyoo Flip is also a great choice for tossing in a travel bag, since it's got a clamshell design similar to the GBA SP. The downside is the screen is even smaller (3.5 inches) but for portability it's unmatched.

What systems/games do you want to play?

My favorite SBC handheld is the Miyoo Mini. Fantastic for anything pre-analog stick (SNES/Genesis/GBC/GBA). Great form factor and OnionOS is killer.

If you want to jump up to N64/PSX/PSP the 40xx is a good choice.

That one looks a little shitty to me tbh. I've be tempted by the RG353V, but I already own a Steam Deck so what's the point?

I’m aiming for SNES / Amiga level gaming. N64 not so much.

Do you want sticks? Vertical or horizontal form factor? What's your budget range?

Right now's not an amazing time to buy a handheld, assuming you're buying from Aliexpress. Their next big sale is Valentine's Day.

Amazon/eBay will always be more expensive. You might find some good deals on Tiktok Shop.

OP thats a good enough handheld for SNES and Amiga.

Is there any handheld priced around $200 that can play Xbox?
Retroid Pocket 5 is on my radar but Xbix is out of the question on it 😂

Anbernic usually has sales from their own site as well. Note that prices went up due to shooing exception loophole being closed and the tariffs.

I do recommend the slightly more powerful RG406H if you can swing the price.

Used Steam Deck LCD maybe? Could probably get it around $250 on eBay. Xbox emulation is kind of heavy though.

The Retroid Pocket 5 can actually run Xbox games using Rocknix (Linux). Some games run like shit, but others run really well.

Man I used to buy so many of those. but honestly I just ended up with a capable Android phone I got from aliexpress for cheap. Pocco x3 GT Pro. it was like 200$ Canadian and I bought Memo S3 controller that works with iphone android etc and has hall affect sticks and triggers.

plays PS2 / GC games and everything below perfectly. even hard games like Fzero GX. also function as a secondary phone as well.

found them much better deal than these weak handhelds.

the only downside is you cant put the controller in your pocket. yet can of course for the phone. but the controler has to go in your backpack or whatever.

the device you mentioned is not really strong enough.

I’ve been eyeing the Flip but I’m debating waiting for a V2, sounds like the current one has some hardware kinks they need to work out (like the hinge)

Yeah i'm gonna wait then. Maybe one or two years and generation of devices.

Thought about it, but it's too big. The RP5 size is a sweet spot and the OLED is beautifull

I have an R36S for about a year now. The software and updates have improved it significantly and I love playing retro games on it.
It has a Gameboy aesthetic and plays everything through the PS1 without a hitch - it is phenomenal for GBA, SNES, NES, MAME, and Gameboy stuff.
I have futz with the d-pad a bit to loosen it - very easy to do, but the standout on this is the screen. It is absolutely beautiful for a $35 handheld.
I play older games on this that I could on my switch as it just feels like a more genuine experience - just finished the amazing Metroid Zero Mission and I'm halfway through Link to the Past.
These cheap handhelds have gotten so good in the last few years, and they are so cheap, they are perfect for travel.

Hot take: get a PSP
I would actually say VITA, for that matter.

But as far as modern emulation devices go, I would actually recommend the Ayn Odin 2. Amazing device, can emulate 2600-Switch, then has Winlator and Gamehub for shockingly good pc emulation...and then obviously any Android games, and you have a light, comfortable device that has insanely good battery life.

I'm a huge fan of Anbernic handhelds so my answer will probably always be yes. I picked up the RG35XXSP over the holidays and it's always in my bag now. I don't have any experience with the one you're looking at, though.
