HD-2D games will continue to develop and bring new innovations, says SE producer Masaaki Hayasaka

“Rather than evolving, it may be more accurate to say that it’s expanding further and further,” Hayasaka said. “For example, in Triangle Strategy — which followed Octopath Traveler — the camera could be rotated, and in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, we experimented by utilizing color palettes that felt authentic to Dragon Quest alongside a formula to forego pixels in the background. I’m sure future HD-2D titles will also add their own unique new spin to the concept, and these innovations will continue to push the boundaries of HD-2D expression in the future.”

Hayasaka ultimately believes that having a keen “artistic sensibility” is key to creating a great HD-2D game, commending the great work of the art teams on games like Octopath Traveler and Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. The development team of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake had a clear vision of what they wanted to do and how they wanted to evolve this art style.

“The HD-2D style was created and inspired by the golden age of the 16-bit era, when the quality of pixel art was at its prime,” Hayasaka explained. “Even when we simply say “remakes,” there are various methods of doing so that may fit the unique characteristics of a title, but because the HD-2D style was born the way it was, it was a perfect fit for remaking games that originally used pixel art. It’s almost harder to believe they wouldn’t mesh well together.”

I might be ostracized for saying it, but I'd rather have HD2D treatments of FF6 and Chrono Trigger than have them be remade like FF7 Intergrade and Rebirth. DQ3 comes out in a few days and I hope it's awesome.

I'm sure SE will consider doing more of them in the future. A game that could REALLY benefit from an HD-2D remake is Xenogears. Infamously unfinished & rushed 2nd disc, tons of content cut and pacing thrown kinda off-balance as a result.

It's a great game that could've been legendary if it had more time to add what the team wanted. An HD-2D remake addressing those issues would be amazing.

Xenogears Remake HD-2D

He gets it.

Those blurry low resolution 3D backgrounds next to those crisp sprites with shitty 3D lighting effects make me sick.

I’d expect nothing less! There’s a near limitless amount of great games that could be remade with the HD2D style and sell all over again for $60, be introduced to younger players and reborn/relived again with users like me. A win-win!

Excited to see the future. And can’t hardly wait to see a really solid effort toward a Bravely Default 3 and Octopath 3.

Chrono Trigger and FFVI when?

These are the two most obvious answers. In fact, I'm surprised that SE hasn't remade them. Both titles are popular, though. Especially as there aren't many platforms to play Chrono Trigger on.
I just hope they don't have the bad idea of making a cheap 3D remake. I know, Romancing Saga 2 is apparently nice, but for CT, the best thing would be to make it HD-2D.
And of course, as already mentioned, Xenogears seems completely ideal for this kind of format.

It deserves a Trials of Mana-quality remake not some HD-2D garbage.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
As much as I'd love to see Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy VI, Xenogears definitely, definitely tops my wishlist. The game's already a 3D/2D mishmash, so the HD-2D treatment would feel like a natural extension of what they've already done, but it's also an opportunity for them to fill in the gaps on disc 2. And it'd be nice to get a better translation than what we had back in 1998.

Not that I'd be complaining if they gave us a CT HD-2D Remake for the 30th anniversary next year...

I 1000% agree with you. Quite frankly I'd, love it if they took this approach with a lot of their PS1 era stuff. DQ4, 5, 6. Xenogears. FF Tactics, Vagrant Story, Front Mission 3.

I'm new to this series, as in never played the originals, but dig the look. Do these games have random encounters? It's unfortunately what put me off of Octopath Traveler (2) because I was constantly doing the same input in fights every 20 seconds.

So in short, less but meaningful fights?

They should have made the Pixel Remaster in this style.

Yes, yes they should have.

As it stands, FF1, FF2, and FF4 all got pixel downgrades from there psp releases.

Yeah I don't get the Pixel remaster at all, seems like a waste when the PSP verison of FFIV was already the superior version. A 2D HD remaster like Dragon Quest 3's HD 2D remaster for FFIV, FFV, and FFVI would be absolutely amazing if they ever decide to do it.

… I prefer the 3DS style of IV and III. As for above, it would be cool to see spinoffs of the mainline in such a style.

The star ocean 2 remake was amazing

Star Ocean 2 is splendid and brilliant, but it's not an HD-2D game. In fact, it's a 2.5D aesthetic, fusing 2D pixel characters with 3D environments.

That's what's so great about it: there are so many ways to represent 2D.

On a personal note, I'd love to see Vandal Hearts and Legend of Kartia again. Not the best-known, especially the latter, but you can never have enough tactical.

I played Vandal Hearts for the first time a few years ago and absolutely loved it. One of my favorite SRPGs now. Totally worth of a comeback, especially since there are so few "serious" new games in the genre these days.

While I understand the people asking for Chrono Trigger I'd rather get something more obscure instead.

Chrono Trigger still plays like a dream. Give me something like Treasure of the Rudras or Treasure Hunter G, make them look cool while reviving those IPs and letting more people know about them. Seemed to work fine for Live A Live.

Also, since we are begging, how about Lufia II?

As long as they focus on making great JRPGs, I don't really care what style they go for tbh.

I'd prefer if they keep making new games. Octopath, Triangle Strategy. Remakes are still mostly boring.

Only one I'd take is Chrono Trigger, simply because it's not widely available these days.
