Headstrong (HotD: Overkill Developer) Hit With Layoffs, Broadens To More Platforms

This is terrible, what's worse is that they made a pretty good bet, it's the publishers that are at fault. HOTD Overkill is a 2009 GOTY contender for me, Sega should have got them on the case right away.

overkill 2 was kinda confirmed at e3

also ps3 version of overkill with move support

as long as there are future projects and the studio is not shutting down there will be chances to grow again

With? Nintendo only published one of their games. I do wish they invested more in Headstrong though. I'm surprised SEGA didn't comission them for the Virtua Cop satire remake, similar to Overkill, that they wanted to make. I was under the impression Overkill did quite well.

I think they pitched that, along with a new Jet Set game for Wii. Sega rejected both. Shame on Sega.

You're think Madworld and the Conduit. I bellieve Overkill was the only one which did well enough for Sega to smile about its sales.

Conduit also did well enough, hence Conduit 2.

News @ 11

I have a Wii but really, the poor thing is left out everytime devs announce something, it's waaaay past the time for Wii HD, and don't tell me about 400k sales because 3DS is just around the corner and NDS is still selling like crazy.

News to me. Source?

Hopefully they'll turn that Jet Set Wii pitch into a Jet Set 3DS pitch. Sounds like a good idea to me.

It's a damn shame. Headstong was one of the best 3rd party devs on Nintendo platforms lately. Overkill was amazing and didn't feel like a half hearted effort. Looking forward to whatever they're doing on the 3DS though!

He added: "It is now the turn of Steve Pritchard and Tancred Dyke-Wells to step up to the plate focusing on production and creative excellence, in the Headstrong tradition, and they are working on three significant bits of business for PlayStation 3 and DS/3DS, and will remain Wii-friendly, given their strong track record for that SKU."

I came into this thread hoping they'd 'broaden' to the 3DS, so that's nice. The PS3 is a strange thing to include, but... whatever works for them, I guess.

So how was Batallion Wars?, never played them.
it was good, needed a bit of polish and meat but it was great.
The Gamecube one was just amazing at its time beacuse the idea of a real time Advance wars was just fantastic but they pulled it off.

The Wii one had a strong Online play but didn't have the replay value needed to be one of the must have games on the Wii.

yeah, but I do remember Seag excutive saying that it didn't do well. Also we are suprised that it did get a sequel, since I bellieve it didn't do that well.

But again what do I know...

Shame. HOTD:Overkill was a really cool game. Their press release photos from that time are eerily prophetic.

House of the Dead: OVERKILL was awesome, Battalion Wars sucked, especially the second one.
Yeah I got Overkill, must have played it like 10 times or more. Love it, so much fun. A bit broken though.

lol no. Battalion Wars 1 at least is pretty damn great. The characters are obnoxious and unlikeable, but the gameplay is top.

Nooooo
battalion wars is awesome

the best pikmin clone ever (forgot little king story. that one is obviously better but still)

2 is even better with pointer controls

Why do you think some people expect Wii2 by 2011?

Unfortunately, exactly. Nintendo's been effectively going it alone since launch. They can't actually go it alone, though. Wii could be getting in 2011 the same kind of third-party support that GameCube got in 2005. :lol

So basically, LotR's development is winding down and now their shifting to the 3ds... With a PS3/Wii2 game some time in the future. Their output is too slow to expect a forth game this generation.

Wait a minute, what?

I only remember 2 Wii games from these people or am I missing something?

How do you cut back on Wii games when you've only dropped 2 in the last 2-4 years?

I count 4 Wii games (+pitches/cancelled game) and two DS retail games in the last three years:
Battalion Wars 2
Dancing with the Stars (under the Zoe Mode label, but it was done by Headstrong)
House of the Dead: Overkill
LotR: Aragorn's Quest (finished earlier this year, but still unreleased due to TT Fusion's PS3 version)

For DS:
Art Academy
Disney The Sorcerer's Apprentice

:(

I wish well on anyone who worked on Overkill. One of the best games this generation and one of the hardest I've ever championed. Sad times...

I hope the Overkill 2 hints that have been dropped not only weren't for nothing, but that it's still in development.

It's hard to argue with some of Overkill's presentation, even if I think they totally missed the mark on what makes HotD enjoyable.

at e3 some people asked them about Overkill 2 while at the aragorns quest booth

they pretty much confirmed it

This was also only reported in a Nintendo fansite podcast. I don't even think Go Nintendo ran the story.

almost all the smaller devs had layoffs lately

in fact most of them were HD twins-devs.

I can't really see the wii being the problem here.

3DS distills all the best qualities of Nintendo into possibly the most promising platform in history.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Crazy that people aren't excited about the 3DS.
