So, I've had this PC since early 2020 and I've been happy with it, but games like Alan Wake 2 and MHWilds are making me think it may need some improvements. I don't play too many recent games but I went through Space Marine 2 this last holyday and it didn't perform as well as I expected/ wanted it to.

Specs:

• GPU: ASUS GeForce RTX 3080 TUF GAMING 10GB GDDR6X
• CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 4.6Ghz 12-Core
• RAM: 32Gb (4x8Gb) Corsair Vengeance LPX 3600Mhz CL18
• Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX X570-F GAMING

I play on a 1440p 244Hz monitor. Power supply is 750W.
I was thinking other alternatives like scaling down my monitor to 1080p or overclocking since I keep everything at stock.

Any thoughts?

No , I wouldn't . That's more than enough to max out most games. Some games are just badly optimized and wont perform well no matter what you have.

Depends how much you want to spend as the system is pretty decent and sure wouldn't downgrade your monitor

Personally would look at upgrading the 3900X to maybe a 5800X3D as I THINK that is the same socket and would likely be a plug and play upgrade, other smarter people here can confirm or correct my mistake

You could get a 5700x3D or 5800x3d if you can find one for the cpu, gpu wise I’d see how a cpu upgrade does for you first as 3080 should still be pretty good card really considering DLSS etc now days

I kinda get that. But I was shocked to see SM II dip to the hight 30s here and there... I'm used to playing on 70+ fps on everything. Also, everything stuttering (even toaster games like OW have some small annoying jumps despite runnig at high rates and being maxed out on my part). I was starting to think something wasn't working or not keeping up.

Would that really be significant? I wasn't expecting the CPU to be the weak link here! But aren't those less powerful than the Ryzen 9 3900X?

5700x3D can be had for around ~$270 and will offer a significant CPU upgrade. Make sure to update your motherboard bios ahead of time if needed.

GPU wise you are kinda fucked right now, a few months back you were able to pick up a 4070 Ti Super for a decent price, but with the stock situation at the moment you are not going to get a good deal.

So, upgrade your CPU if you want, but perhaps wait a few months for GPU stock and pricing to normalise.

An RTX 4070 Super is around 15% faster than your GPU, meaning that a significant upgrade from your current setup will be expensive. I don't think you'd be satisfied with the price to performance/improvement ratio. I'm not sure how much a newer CPU could do for you.

Yep that's what I did, 3800x to 5800X3D. Awesome upgrade for not much money, and sold my 3800x for like 80 quid.

unless you want to go all in with a new system with AM5 cpu, DDR5 RAM, etc then this is the best value to get more out your system.

the 5800x3d holds up well against more recent AMD cpus. 32GB is plenty RAM so it would be a waste to have to upgrade to DDR5.

the GPU situation is fucked. i'd definitely try get a 4000 series GPU but prices are way up because of 5000 series. DLSS frame gen gets hate for "fake frames" but it really does make a difference. it'll help you hit 200+ fps on your monitor. I enable frame gen in any game that supports it as I have a 360Hz monitor.

if you're in no rush to upgrade then hold off. prices are already going down for 5000 cards as stock improves and more models release. i think around summer things should look better and you can grab a 4000 card.

i'd upgrade the CPU right now and do GPU later in the year

DLSS4 has extended the life of these older cards too. Now Transformer model DLSS performance will look arguably just as good as DLSS quality did on the old CNN model (in some ways better) and perform better

yup. i tried out Cyberpunk at Performance DLSS and it's so much better than the old model. Still a little blurry but what do you expect? but at least it looks a lot smoother... i mean before there were loads of artifacts but now it looks solid.

for 1440p I´d not upgrade anything besides maybe the CPU, and I´d never downgrade the monitor, ever.
If you want to meaningfully upgrade your GPU and go for higher fps or higher res then you will have to go for a 4080 minimum.

In the end it completely depends on what your output target is. For 1440p/60 your system is good for 99% of all games bar exceptions like Pathtracing modes or technical catastrophies like MH:Wilds which doesn`t run smoothly on any system.

I got the 5700x3d for 150€ few weeks ago on Aliexpress, not sure if they send to USA too, but it's not the first CPU i buy there and they've been very good and cheap.

As for the 3080, i got that card too and lately and with DLSS 4 i'm still more than fine, KCD 2 ran perfectly, we got a 15-20% free performance with the new tech.

I was planning to change late last year to the new series but yea, can't defent the new Nvidia 5000's, the leap is just too small, and so are the prices, AMD is looking better but i feel jumping from 3080 to 9070XT would be fine but not as big as i'd like, so it seems the best idea is to wait for some revisions late this year or next year, maybe a 9080 from AMD that's a bit more expensive or a 5080 super without ridiculous prices..

I'd wait, it's a terrible moment to upgrade GPU's, things will get a bit better in 3-5 months probably but for now.... nah

I was going to say, a 5800X3D could be had for a reasonable price, if you have the extra funding to upgrade to a newer card I'd recommend going for a one of the 16 GB 40xx series just to have the VRAM future proof for several of the newer games (something I did recently but had to replace my entire PC).

How much you wanna spend is a huge part, especially right now. To me, we're in another weird "in-between" spot, where depending on some cases it may be better to wait, on others it may be good to bite. It just depends on a number of variables. But how much you're wanting to spend is pretty key.

I always forget about the 5700X3D as it would make a great choice as well, good call

Maybe upgrade your CPU since the 3900X is going to likely be your bottleneck if you are not getting the performance you want. Space Marine 2 is quite CPU heavy so an upgrade in that area would be very noticeable.

The GPU market is fucked at the moment and the 3080 is more than good enough for 1440p 60+FPS in every game I've played. Sometimes I'll even reduce a few settings like shadows (usually to medium) or texture quality to high instead of ultra to get a good boost.

Personally, I'm waiting out for a GPU since the 5000 series is dog shit, unless you're happy spending £2000 on a 5090 (not that you'll ever find one).

32GB of RAM is fine too, no need to make changes there.

What's your budget? Also you sound like you don't want to get near the console space, I'm okay with my series x, I usually disable Vsync to push more fps, disable blur to make every frame count, all other stuff from here is your preference.

Do it. I ordered a new prebuilt computer just recently with a 9000X3d and a 5080.
Lemme give you a FOMO angle. There's an ever looming threat of China invading Taiwan, if that happens chip production will be disrupted for years. You'll be struck with your current PC and smartphone for a long time. Most experts expect it to happen within two years.
