Today at frys all Sony BD are buy one get one free. They ran this promotion in dec 06 and Jan 07 at BB to artificially increase sales figures to compete with HD-DVD. Just one of the many tools Sony uses to create Spin.

The Prestige HD-DVD has been announced in the UK for June 2007 courtesy of Warner Bros. (some people are saying March 12th) for those who don't mind paying a little more for imports and solely own an HD-DVD player.

As many have pointed out, Sony has been the principal backer of Blu-ray, and also the designer of the PlayStation3 games console, which uses a Blu-ray drive. With each console, Sony has bundled a copy of the Blu-ray movie Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, together with a gift certificate for $15 off the purchase of a second Blu-ray movie. Microsoft, on the other hand, also offers an HD DVD drive as a $199 add-on for its Xbox 360, which it has bundled with a copy of the HD DVD movie King Kong.

"Most people spend their gift cards in January and February. And because retailers can't count gift card sales until the cards are redeemed, those sales dollars are pushed out of December into the next year. Gift card sales now represent 5% of total holiday sales, so those dollars are having a significant impact on retailers' business in the months after Christmas. About 40% of card redemptions are made in the first week after Christmas. But the rest comes in January or early February."

This seems to be consistent with the curves as indicated by the graphs: a dramatic run-up in Blu-ray sales in January, followed by a flattening of the curve in late January. The PlayStation3 was launched on Nov. 17 in the U.S., about the time the Blu-Ray sales begin to head upward.

Now that contents are being rolled out, I'm actually going to start buying blu-rays regularly. Next is prestige, casino royale, and pursuit of happyness.

Does the Blu-Ray version of Ghost in the Shell Innocence have an English track or subtitles? I saw it while looking for VF 5 the other day.

Yeah I have been pretty much been averaging about 1 a week since I got my PS3 although over the next 2 weeks I will have to increase it to 2 a week with The Departed, Usual Suspects (still only have a VHS of it), The Prestige, and Babel.

One of my friends bought a PS3 last weekend. It did not include Talledega Nights, nor the gift certificate.

Yeah that quote was mentioned in that big FUD-fest thread on AVS when the Nielsen numbers first came out, but Fanboys (of either side) will latch onto anything that will help their cause

I like the Prestige is much much more than the Illusionist. The pace, the suspense, the mystery of what's next, etc. The Prestige is one of those movies that makes you contemplate long after you finish watching the movie

What exactly do I need to run Lossless, or HD audio properly with Blu-Ray? Will any reciever with HDMI inputs do? Do I need a reciever that has some sort of "HD Audio" stamp on it, like it was for DTS and DD 5.1?

I really want to be able to run the audio lossless, for the complete Blu-Ray experience, but with some minor searching, I'll still haven't found the answers I need.

I must say though, the normal DTS and DD 5.1 tracks I've been hearing on the discs so far seem cleaner than DVD already. Am I insane, or is this actually the case?

Yeah the PS3 just pushed the Blu-ray sales out the door. Are you going to get POTC 1 and 2 on Blu-ray?

What do you have, the PS3? Since it has no analog outs, you can hear 5.1 lossless through HDMI only. Any receiver that can accept PCM audio through HDMI will do the job.

Probably the most telling point is one that is not reflected in the graphic: the "inception-to-date" figures, which tally up all of the sales for each format. Although the graphs seem to indicate a considerable decline on the part of HD DVD in favor of Blu-Ray, this isn't true at all: to date (Jan. 28), 53.3 percent of all next-gen DVDs have been in the HD DVD format, compared to 46.7 percent for Blu-ray. This contrasts quite strongly with reports that the Blu-Ray format is widely outselling HD DVD.

Figures from another analyst firm, The NPD Group, which also tracks U.S. retail sales, also seem to support this: sales of hardware players (not movies) from April through December 2006 also give HD DVD a slight edge, 52 percent to 48 percent for Blu-ray. Unfortunately, they are reserving the most recent data for their paying clients.

According to Erin Crawford, the general manager of Neilsen VideoScan, the bundling of Talledaga Nights – and, by inference, King Kong – was not included in the Nielsen numbers, as it does not represent a conscious buying choice on the part of the consumer. However, since a consumer must make the choice to buy another disc, the effects of the gift certificate would influence the Neilsen numbers. Crawford declined to estimate how many disc sales could have been a direct result of the gift certificate. Also, the Blu-Ray sales do not include the sales of games.

from enjoying their superior format and awesome selection of movies? Why all the obsessing over HD DVD's impending death? Like I said if Bluray wins I'll pick upa PS3 eventually and I'll only be $200 out for having supported HD DVD and will still have a nice selection of movies that i can still enjoy.

P.S. picked up Lucky Number Sleven last night and will be picking up Departed, Babel and Children of Men on the day/date of their release. Anyone have a date for Scarface?

No.

There were two different charts going around. One with and one without the HD-DVD combo sales. Blu-Ray has been extending it's lead every week this year.

My problem with HDDVD is that I don't have Universal movies because of a dying format. The sooner it dies the sooner we'll have Children of men on BluRay.

There are also Warner Bros. movies you don't have on BRD because the format can't yet duplicate the HDi features those discs use.
