Well this will be resolved sooner or later and to tell you the truth there's still time till I buy my PS3. Universal is what pains me the most.

Universal & Microsoft are the biggest party poopers. The mass market and industry prefer blu-ray, those 2 goons have to ruin it for us. ...so yeah the sooner HD-DVD die the better

I just bought an E1 (european A2 equivalent) to replace my xbox addon, as it was so damn noisy (xboxes fault, not the drive)

Although I think if there is a winner it'll be bluray, and will therefore tend towards buying bluray releases, I still have plenty of HDDVDs to watch, and I don't want to miss out on HDDVD exclusives, or those multiformat releases where bluray drops the ball

Did you not read my post? How exactly are they "ruining" it for you? What is impeding you right now from running out and buying a blu ray player and enjoying your movies? Like I said in an earlier post put your money where your mouth is.

I think this quit happening months ago (Regarding a disparity in quality), the only case at this point would be with special features since Blu-Rays' version of HDi is not finished yet.

Yea, BD-J 1.0 is what all players have at the moment. BD-J 1.1 is what studios want. This will be avaiable in the new Sony Ruby and Saphire players that might be coming out in June or July. The new Samsung BD1200 will come with 1.0 in March but is updatable through ethernet port. Let's just say that by late summer all Blu-ray players will be up to date.

Seriously, you live in some kind of dreamworld if you really believe that.

The mass market at the moment couldn't care less about Blu Ray and HD DVD, there really is no way to doubt that. And if anything (i.e. if you would actually ask millions of people about their opinion), the mass market would obviously prefer HD DVD because of its lower price point.

Yeah, I have a PS3, hooked up to my Bravia through HDMI. However, my Harmon/Kardon 7.1 channel reciever came out just before HDMI was common. Since it doesn't have HDMI inputs, does this mean I'm screwed for lossless? Is there some kind of workaround? I'd hate to have to drop another $1500-$2000 dollars on a reciever only a couple years after I bought this one.

Yes, you're screwed. Your other option would be to buy the Panasonic or Sony Blu-ray players and use their analog outs. Both of them will have a True HD and DTS Master audio decoders updated in April. The Panasonic is a sure thing, the Sony is a rumor.

I don't know which HK you have, 335, 440? Another suggestion would be to sell it or trade it towards a Denon 2807.

You're screwed unfortunately ... though you don't have to spend $1500-$2000 for a new receiver.

well, warner still aren't (as i understand) putting DD tru hd soundtracks on some of their blu-ray releases that have them on the hd-dvds (most recent example the wicker man remake).

not that you'd want to buy the wicker man, but if you did, you'd want to get the hd-dvd version.

Thanks for the help. I'm sure I'll buy a standalone at some point. However doing it just to run an analog connection would probably not be the right move, considering digital is the new standard, and also the current price of BR players. I'll probably get one when it also does BR recordable, comes with a hard drive, and runs a picture quality considered to be vastly superior to PS3. To my knowledge, the PS3 is currently considered the top BR player on the market.

My current reciever is the DPR 1001. I have been extremely satisfied with it's performance. The DPR stands for "Digital Path Reciever". This means the signal remains digital from start to finish. Normal recievers convert digital to analog before you hear the sound, which can cause some sound degradation, as well as introduce noise to the audio stream. Having a DPR reciever means super clean sound. It also means a much, much smaller form factor, and a far cooler running temperature. I love this technology, and am convinced it is the future, but manufacturers, heck, Harmon/Kardon themselves seem to have abandoned this route for now.

If I were to buy a new reciever, I would hate to have to go back to the old analog ways. I'll do it if I have to, but will hold out a while in hopes that I can eventually get a new all digital rig.

This is definitely true. Although my DPR 1001 was listed at $1500, I was able to get it significantly cheaper. I would certainly look for a good price on any potential reciever I would buy, but would be prepared to bend over and pay $1500+ if I had to.

Well I assume they were refering to that particular console gen just like they are refering to this particular formats gen now (the PR is just for Bluray not possible future Sony formats too).

Jumpman, there is a "pseudo" way to listen to the uncompressed tracks on Blu-Rays with your receiver, I do it on mine.

If you're using optical - which I'd assume your doing - if you go into the Blu-Ray settings in the XMB on the PS3 and select "Linear PCM" instead of "Bitstream" as the output for the optical connection. Then, when you start the movie go to the menu and select the uncompressed track. Now, since its outputting optical, the PS3 will downmix the uncompressed 5.1 mix to 2.0 and output it as PCM stereo out of the optical and into your receiver, where you can put it through Dolby Pro Logic II or just older Pro Logic or just leave it as stereo. The sound is still uncompressed and sounds better than any of the compressed tracks, but you lose the discrete sound separation.

Since you lose the discrete sound separation I don't tend to use it on movies that make heavy use of it, but on something like "Chicago" which is more music based the uncompressed track sounds great this way and is a good substitute if you don't have an HDMI receiver and prefer the advantages of the uncompressed sound even though you lose the discrete channels.

Casino Royale was much faster, It got to top 50 within 24 hours, and top 30 within 48 hours

In the most expansive release shake-up in the short history of both next-gen formats, Fox today announced that it will postpone a large chunk of its previously confirmed Blu-ray March and April title line-up.

The following titles (which include some MGM titles, also distributed by Fox) have all been pulled from the studio's Blu-ray release lineup. (The date to the left is the originally-announced street date):

March 13: Commando, Dances with Wolves, Dodgeball, Ice Age, The Thomas Crown Affair (1999).

April 3: Dude, Where's My Car?, The Fly (1986), Hannibal, The Silence of the Lambs, Tristan & Isolde.

April 17: Turistas

The rest of the Fox's winter Blu-ray release line-up remains unchanged.

Given the number of titles affected, we contacted Fox Home Entertainment directly for comment on the extensive title shake-up. The studio assured that none of these titles have been cancelled, only been pushed back to yet-to-be-determined dates due to a general "release schedule shuffling," said Fox's senior VP of marketing communications Steve Feldstein.

We'll certainly keep you posted as new street dates for these titles come in, and if there are any changes to the previously announced specs and/or supplemental features.

In the meantime, we've moved all of the above titles to the "Release Dates Postponed" section of our Blu-ray Release Schedule.

Anyway, that doesn't mean we don't have some news for you. First up this afternoon, a Blu-ray Disc update. There have been a few reports today that Fox and MGM have cancelled a bunch of their upcoming Blu-ray Disc titles. I spoke with a senior Fox rep a short time ago, and this is completely untrue. What's happening is that they're moving some dates around. Nothing is being cancelled per se. Some titles are moving up, some are being pushed back. There's just a bit of fluidity to the schedule due to authoring and replication issues, and it should all settle down again soon. I'm sure there are those hyping this as "the end of Blu-ray" online, but the reality is far from it. We'll post more details on the revised street dates when they're available.

How could anyone be excited about Eragon?

Oh yea, it's on Blu-Ray; I guess that automatically makes it not a steaming pile of horse shit.

Of those three, only Rocky is worth buying and it was known to be coming to BRD about a month ago.

Not that I care about Eragon but to be fair it hasn't done half bad in terms of US + Worldwide $$ release figures... not super great, but certainly not terrible.. someone will probably but it on BRD. There are most certainly worst movies coming out on BRD.
