How do you get the PS4 to work with surround sound?

I've been googling for a while and can't find a solution.

My set up is this:

PS4 -> HDMI to HDMI slot with ARC -> Optical from TV to reciever

This works with the XB1 (I get surround sound through this method), but when I try and do that with the PS4 I just get stereo sound.

I even tried connecting my receiver directly to the PS4 via optical, and in the settings for The Last of Us it still only registered 2 channels. Anyone know what the problem is?

is it showing as 5/7.1 in the xmb area? i think you can choose what set up you have in TLOU which changes the output

Don't use PCM because PCM surround doesn't work through optical. Use Dolby or DTS bitstream

Why the hell are you using HDMI and optical? Surely the optical cable will be what is messing things up for you?

when hooked with an optical cable is otical cable selected as primary audio source?

should be easy- this is what I do-but I select DTS

dat 9.2 sound....amazing-

Optical only supports 5.1 via DTS or Dolby Surround, and 2channel LPCM. Going through your TV's, you're pretty much bottlenecking it to that. If you want to get the best sound out of your PS4, you'll need to connect the HDMI directly to your receiver. There's no reason you shouldn't.

This is, of course, assuming your receiver has HDMI slots. If you have to go through optical, make sure your audio is set to DTS or Dolby.

Ok, my TV has ARC and my speaker system is 5.1. I get 5.1 through the Xbox One using the exact same setup I try on the PS4 to no avail.

It goes XBOX ONE -> HDMI -> TV -> OPTICAL FROM TV TO RECEIVER -> 5.1

ARC is only used if you want HDMI audio to go to your receiver over an HDMI cable from your TV (hence Audio Return Channel). Optical isn't an ARC. It's just an output
