I've been googling for a while and can't find a solution.

My set up is this:

PS4 -> HDMI to HDMI slot with ARC -> Optical from TV to reciever

This works with the XB1 (I get surround sound through this method), but when I try and do that with the PS4 I just get stereo sound.

I even tried connecting my receiver directly to the PS4 via optical, and in the settings for The Last of Us it still only registered 2 channels. Anyone know what the problem is?

I'm guessing you're using an old receiver with no HDMI ports?

Don't use PCM because PCM surround doesn't work through optical. Use Dolby or DTS bitstream

Why the hell are you using HDMI and optical? Surely the optical cable will be what is messing things up for you?

Optical only supports 5.1 via DTS or Dolby Surround, and 2channel LPCM. Going through your TV's, you're pretty much bottlenecking it to that. If you want to get the best sound out of your PS4, you'll need to connect the HDMI directly to your receiver. There's no reason you shouldn't.

This is, of course, assuming your receiver has HDMI slots. If you have to go through optical, make sure your audio is set to DTS or Dolby.

ARC is only used if you want HDMI audio to go to your receiver over an HDMI cable from your TV (hence Audio Return Channel). Optical isn't an ARC. It's just an output

I had the PS4 connected directly via optical cable at one point and still got nothing but stereo.

Was it definitely DD or DTS selected as the format? Optical won't do multi channel linear PCM.

I'll try again now. But yeah, I just tested the XB1 again to make sure it was outputting 5.1 and it definitely was.
