i find it strange that Xbox ..

is apparently going full third party according to every insider and blogger but South by Midnight , a new ip, that can definitely use the exposure is exclusive. Not to mention Starfield thats now been out for what almost 2 years (?) and is made by a developer that while its owned by MS now is historically multiplatform. Wierd. And i believe the MCC to S2 and PS5 rumors because theyve been corroborated enough but is a 10+ year old collection of even older games a true declaration of going full third party? Idk im not buying it.

I get the optics of Halo on other platforms but objectively it just seems like a really good business move to be on the sales leading platform and presumably a launch title for what almost certainly will be a massive success in Switch 2. Plain and simple im just not buying this third party Sega route being discussed by everyone and their mother as being a certain fact. Why would they announce a next generation console if they have no intent on attracting people to it with reasons to buy. Doesn’t add up.

Ok, that's fair. Most people here are anticipating a more-or-less full shift to third party eventually, but "eventually" is the operative word. No one (to my knowledge) has said that everything is getting ported day-and-date to Playstation, here on out. There will of course be exceptions, and there will of course be delays in many of those ports.

Most games announced from now on seem to be multiplatform. The older games are probably coming at some point, but it's not like they have an army of infinite developers porting game after game. Some might take time, while others could be deemed not worth the effort.

i'd be stunned if this doesn't come to ps5. the question is whether there's a delay due to favoring the first party or they just didn't start building a ps5 version yet.

I think it’s more to do with timing than anything

If devs already have PlayStation kits, they release day and date

If the kits came late, or they hadn’t started work on PlayStation in parallel, they release first on Xbox

I expect avowed will come to ps5 too
I think it's resources. They'll work on PS5 releases after the Xbox releases especially for smaller studios like Compulsion.

TOW2 is coming day and date on ps5 though

If ps5 wasn’t planned early in the pipeline it comes later

But SoM, had they planned for ps5 to begin with, would be day and date

Everything will come to ps5. MS is fully in the game to make money and it makes no sense to ignore the largest platform.

Plus, it seems like ps fans are buying quite a few copies of Xbox games.

They may have finally found their way to fund / incentivise gamepass growth

Can probably afford to keep it off Ps5 since all the hitters are making their way there.

And I can see some merit to still funding smaller titles to give gamepass some exclusive content.

Besides, nobody wants that woke shit, right?...

I don't think that at all, I think MS will release a game when they decide to release a game and on which platform or forms they want! They don't have to do anything remember! They will decide what is best for each game value wise and release at MS's chosen time frame. Does that mean Halo will release on PS? I'm sure it does.

Doom Dark Ages and Ninja Gaiden 4 confirmed for PS5

Am I missing something?
Doom is historically multiplatform. Why change that now and hurt the ip. And i think Ninja Gaiden at this point would be expected to be multiplatform also. Just seems to me they are still interested in pulling people into the ecosystem with exclusives. I dont see a full fledged day 1 release on rival platforms anytime soon especially with a next gen console confirmed to be on the way.

I'm sure they checked the focus groups and ran the numbers and realized that nobody cares about South of Midnight or Starfield.

MS also blew their load not making NG exclusive, the way everyones been clamoring for a new one and the attention its getting, this was a chance to bring him back home (not counting the snes games) it would've at least gave the console some kinda life and positive press on SM, maybe would've even gotten a few people to buy an Xbox for it

They should go full third party for this gen; build their studios and IP up. Then pull the rug next gen for the new Xbox. It’s a hard battle convincing people to spend another $500 on an xbox if they already have a PS5 especially if it’s for new IP they don’t care enough about yet.

I do expect MS to keep some titles exclusive, both to give people a reason to buy into the system and because it's not going to be worth the resources to port some exclusives.

NG isn't big enough to sell a large number of Xboxes.
And cutting the platform with the biggest install base would mean little or no profit to the developers.

Making Ninja Gaiden exclusive would have been a bad move, it would sell two copies and maybe a couple Gamepass subs.
Putting on GP day one and it being multiplat much better move, MS best strategy is selling Gamepass subs theres pretty much no recourse to make the Series consoles sell gangbusters at this time, if they are making a flagship console nextgen they can start again with a strong launch lineup (imagine the next CoD, Elder Scrolls, Doom being 6 month launch exclusive to Xbox Next, that would be a hell of a launch), right now just keep making that moolah.

6 months? That's no real time at all, majority of people will just choose ps6 and wait it out, they have to be cutthroat like Sony and go 2 years exclusively at least

You do know forspoken's exclusive clause just ended right? Now imagine if that was actually a good game, Xbox players would just now be able to play something that released 2.5 years ago😂😂we need slimy MS back and not this nice guy BS I think it's time for satya and Phil to head out at this point, sony is never going to play nice.

No offense, but I would guess the sales expectations for South of Midnight might be small enough that it doesn't justify spending money on a port. If it exceeds expectations and finds an audience, maybe one gets greenlit? It seems more like an art project than a game people are excited to play.

As for Starfield, I think the word of mouth was pretty poisonous around that game. My PlayStation friends who loved Skyrim and Fallout turned sour on it after seeing gameplay footage at launch. Again I'm just guessing here, but MS probably has someone who's done the calculations and projected sales for a PS5 version. It's probably low enough that it's not worth the time and money.

its all logistics, some of these teams are not ready to pivot quickly to simultaneous release.
missing day1 promo/hype cycle on ps5 can be pretty detrimental to their success though. probably wiser to postpone games rather than doing tiered release.

Microsoft’s strategy should be:
1) put out good fucking games. Indiana Jones is a start
2) Get rid of Gamepass (at least Day 1 AAA). It is obvious it’s a money sink and gamers aren’t subscribing. MS refuses to share numbers for a reason.
3) Put all games on all platforms day and date. Sell games on the MS Store and Xbox at a slight discount compared to Steam/PS5/Switch2.

That’s what I’d do.

I’ll buy Indiana Jones on PS5 when it goes on sale. I’m loving it on Steam

I still think Starfield is worth porting as I suspect it could get a good 2-3M copies on PS5. I do agree that word of mouth has hurt the sales and making it exclusive probably cost it a good 5M sales on PS5.

However it’s obvious that sales on Xbox are so bad that porting to that system might not be worth it.

Square Enix is gonna be in a world of disappointment if they expect Xbox gamers to pick up the slack from “underwhelming” PS5 sales.

Huh...I guess I would be shocked if Starfield on PS5 sold 2 million over the first couple years. Maybe I'm undervaluing it's potential.

Why would I care about #2 ? Why would I care that a $3T company is having a money sink if the service allows me to save money.

I'm not a shareholder of Microsoft (damn I wish I had bought years ago lol). So why is this a strategy that for me, a gamer, makes any sense?

I want to pay more money? Not really.

This is so cute. I love it when people show me who lives in reality and who lives in a fantasy.

Yes, you should care whether it makes money. BECAUSE MONEY IS WHAT ENSURES THAT SERVICE WILL REMAIN IN EXISTENCE. I mean…seriously…why does this have to be explained to you? You people seem to act like it will continue to exist indefinitely and that MS will just continue to throw money at Xbox when it should be obvious to anybody with a functioning brain that (for better or worse) MS is no longer allowing Xbox to lose money. It won’t survive, especially after Call of Duty clearly failed to move the needle. Not without a miraculous and unprecedented level of growth.

Enjoy it while lasts. As far as I’m concerned it can’t die soon enough. It’s nothing more than a race to the bottom.

Contrary to popular belief Starfield is not a terrible game and I legit believe it’s very much worth playing for anyone who is a fan of Bethesda. It’s definitely the weakest Bethesda game, but I still think the game has sales potential on name alone.

However, Halo and Gears collection are the best games for MS to put on PS5/Switch 2. Those collections would sell 5M easily on both systems. There is no one on Xbox to sell those franchises too. Easy money for Xbox/MS.

Same reason why Returnal has no PS5 Pro patch. Small team with limited resources and their attention is elsewhere at the moment.

It might not ever make sense to port South of Midnight to PS5 either. That study might simply get shuttered after the release of the game. Look at Ballistic Moon after they released Until Dawn remake. They laid off pretty much anyone who wasn't needed to patch the game and get it fixed up.

I think Starfield hits PS5 this year, but they JUST finished Shattered Space DLC which released in September.

You have to consider resources, incentive, and also timing. When does it make the most sense to release a game like Starfield on PS5? Well, preferably during a slow period with not a lot of competition. I don't think we'll here any announcements until at least a few weeks after Avowed releases, which is Feb 18th.

But you're already looking at a lot of competition Dynasty Warriors Origins just came out, KCD2 comes out in the beginning of February, Monster Hunter Wilds comes out at the end of February, Assassin's Creed Shadows comes out in March. I think we're going to see a Q2 release of Starfield on PS5, but South of Midnight? That'll be an interesting one. I think it'll depend on reception. If it's a sub 80 metacritic game, they might not even bother.

How it started : "Remove the service"
How it ended : "You should care it makes money because money is what ensures that service will remain in existence"

A post for the ages

I should not be subscribing to Gamepass because think of the 3 trillion $ company that works in analytics and problably does a shitload of money on me anyway on a daily basis with a whole suite of software at home and at work. Now that's cute and fucking naive.

On top of not even anyone on here knowing what the end line is when they calculate the end of month

This is the same fucking discussion we had on Netflix circa 2007. How can they make money??

If they decide the bleeding is too difficult and they cut the service, so be it, but entertaining the idea that they should cut the service when you have no fucking clue at the end of it all what the result is on the calculator after they punch in the numbers is absolutely ridiculous.

They gave most of their software suite away for free years ago to mainstream customers, cloud and so on. BEFORE becoming one of the top 3 richest company in the world.

I'll let them punch in the numbers. I think they know what they're doing, over a triggered GAF poster that thinks it should cut off the service... because think of the saving the said service?
