I love the look of PC98 games aka the Anime PC game machine

So, I've recently tried Xak III on a PC98. And it is quite a lot more brutal than I thought, lmao.

You were right. This game ain't pulling any punches. If a major game studio were to make content like this today, they would face considerable backlash, even in Japan.
(A little bit of context: that huge monster is assaulting the royal guard & the king, and later the princess gets dragged in too.
She says "I would rather die than become your play thing.")

If there was a PC98 style game made today with NSFW content and good graphics, that would be a day 1 buy for me.
Indie games that are actually good and don't care about ESRB ratings are a blessing from the heavens, seriously.

Also: Thanks for bumping the thread again. It's maybe the best on GAF.

Anyone know of any good PC98 Pixel Artists that do commissions? I would love to get my FFXIV/WoW character comissions made into PC98 Wallpapers for my Modern/retrothemed PC set.

These are done by Regulus / SirKnightbot.

Resolutions are higher than actual pc98 640x400 specs, but I am impressed.

Can someone explain to me why Japanese 2D games made during the 2000s look so generic & bland?
Did the staff artists of the 90s all get promoted to manager positions & then stop making art, or what?

Personally I don't like the visual style of Japanese 2D games from the mid-2000s.

And no, the latter game was not designed for children, it has plenty of nudity.

I think the style is called moë?
It caught on in the mid 2000's and ruined anime art for a while.

Yeah, anime style in the 80s through most of the 90s was just simply much better. Games follow anime style so here we are.

Yeah, I think it's as simple as that. The art styles that were in vogue changed, and 2005ish was probably the peak for this kind of style. Technology changes probably played a part in terms of games though. 16-colour images benefit from high contrast with strong linework.

The 1995 Branmaker looks fucking beautiful, man.

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!
As always, I have nothing to contribute to this thread beyond just gawking at the artwork and saying "thank you" to whoever bumped it.
