I thought I would never own a Mortal Kombat game...

This video changed my opinion:

http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/action/mortalkombatdeception/media.html?gcst=mkdecept_72204_om1.asx

This game is totally packed with content. What interest me the most is not the 1 on 1 fighting but the Chess, Quest and Puzzle-Fighter ripoff modes. I know the game is not going to be deep as a fighting game like VF but all these extras look so much fun to play. The graphics of the game also look pretty darn good.

I like the fast forward effect in the quest mode and I am looking forward to find out how big is the quest mode in terms of content and what the character development system is like.

I thought Midway is going to die but MK might bring back life to the company.

Err, Street Fighter is considered a very serious (and hardcore) fighting series. Third Strike is a well respected game.

Mortal Kombat is not a serious fighter anymore. Dead or Alive 3 holds more respect between hardcore fighters than MK does.

Let me continue!

Fuck good games! Fuck great gameplay! Fuck competition! Fuck the entire reason for playing fighting games!

I thought this thread was going to be about Midway Arcade Treasures 2, because that's my situation regarding the content.

If only there was some way to buy a special MAT2 that didn't have the 3 MK games in them. Then I could continue my life being very pleased in never giving the MK franchise a fucking penny.

I don't like to generalize, but almost all of the so called hardcore fighting gamers who boast about their mad red parry skills or how advanced they are that they cannot bear to play anything or anyone below them are robotic hot air filled assholes. At least in my neck of the woods.

That was even more apparent during the MvsC2 days, you could ask them what their favorite characters were and they'd say something like "MegaMan, Strider, Gambit etc." but every single time they played they switched to Terminator mode and went "I......use......nothing less than Magneto......Sentinel......Cable.......top tier......must win at all cost". And then I stood there while I waited for my turn and saw how every single one of them played like a robot clone, same techniques, same infinite combos, it was boring and lame.

What was the fun in that?

That's why I don't give 2 shits about what the hardcore fighting community thinks, cause last I heard they have no authority whatsoever to say what's good or not or what's a "true" fighting game or not.

Maybe I sound hateful, but that's the elitist vibe I get from some of those folks, especially when they categorize people who play or like MK as scrubs.

basically, for alot people...

winning = fun

you're not gonna win with your awesome jill valentine/bbhood/amingo team if they're using cable/storm/sent and have even a half decent grasp on what to do...

Reno is a hardcore fighter, and he loves Mortal Kombat. Plus he's ten times the gamer you'll ever be, duder.

MvC2 isn't a good example of judging hardcore fighting fans anyways, the game is horribly broken. SF3 3rd on the other hand, is quite balanced and skill intensive, and a lot more interesting.

the thing with MvC2 is that enough characters have stuff that's close to broken to make the game competitive... it's not a game where 1 or 2 characters are just fucked beyond fairness...

its just elitest crap

same as

hardcore anime fans vs casuals
hardcore rpgs vs most squaresoft stuff
hardcore gamers vs sports gamers
Mac users vs the rest of the world

Not saying I dont enjoy virtua fighter or street fighter (heck ive gave capcom more money than they deserve for the same 3 different game states *2, alpha, vs* recycled 800 times), but since ive grown older, and I dont live in the heart of japan, or some major metropolis where people still give a fuck about "arcades" anymore (since ive spanked everyone ive ever played in SF, soul calibur, tekken, vf, etc in terms of home gaming), Id rather play a game that is enoyable with stuff to unlock, and easy to pick up and play, and I know this will get the elitest fapping furiously but MK was always and always will be "more interesting" for me to play.

Problem is that I can't use SF3 as a good example since 98% of the time it was empty. During the first few weeks the game came out(inluding Third Strike) everyone was hyped, Ryu, Ken, Ryu, Ken, Ryu, Ken, the odd Alex player, then Akuma was added in Third Strike and it was Ryu, Ken, Akuma everytime until nobody played it anymore.

You literally had to stakeout the SFIII cabinet for hours to find someone to play with. If I had 3 great matches with another player, usually against someone using Hugo or Oro, that was basically my entire non CPU SFIII experience.

I'm not a Street Fighter expert nor do I even claim to be a fighting game expert, "duder". I do, however, know several very good fighting gamers (including a friend who has played VF4 in Japan for two straight years and could probably do decently against Reno, though I hate to make a claim one way or the other).

Oh, and what's the with shit attitude "duder"? When have I ever claimed to be an "elite" fighter? Let me see...NEVER? I could never stand up to Reno and I don't care. I don't play at that level and I don't ever wish to. That's not why I play games. When Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat was "the shit" I was playing f*cking PC games.

It's pretty sad when you insult someone by using ANOTHER PERSON as a base for that insult (especially when you are rather ignorant about the one you are insulting...though I've now informed you).

I actually agree with you, in all honesty. :p

I was pretty deep in the pc scene back then too.

Pc gaming was pretty chaotic back in 1991-92-93. Other than Doom and Wolf3D, and the point and click games, it was kind of a wasteland outside of that. Pc Gaming really picked up and went full throttle around 1994-1995. Before that, it was all about the amiga

Unless Jill of the Jungle and Haloween Harry were your definition of high quality titles...

I mean, there was a few ultra high quality games, but back then, for sheer fun factor (outside of doom and the other fps), the consoles/arcades had the best platformers/action games, and of course

Fighting games.

But jesus christ I remember how me and my friend paid 200$ for "multimedia kits" only to play the UNCENSORED ARCADE PERFECT * for us, in 1994 * port of MK1 and MK2.

Dont deny it, you shat your pants when you saw MK1 and MK2 running on pc for the first time. It was like owning the arcade at home. For 3 years, my life consisted of multiplayer doom, and mk1/mk2 ;)

So stop pretending to be such an oldschool pc game player, since in the early '90, it kinda sucked to play games on a pc. Except for a few awesome titles

I also lost interest in the series after MK2, but man, I may consider picking this up, if only for the MK/Archon/Battle Chess hybrid they've got in there....

I remember playing some (mostly unofficial and hacked in bizarre ways) Street Fighter 2 ports back in the early 90s. They were very slow and unresponsive, but the moves were easier to pull off with the arrows on the keyboard.

That all changed with MK and MK2 which actually had excellent control on the PC. MK2 was pretty awesome on the PC.

They must've deleted the post cause I can't find where anyone said "Mortal Kombat is better and deeper than Street Fighter".

MK: DA wasn't a bad game just kinda meh i guess.. though I played this new MK @ E3 the puzzle game was crap compared to puzzle fighter (it left alot to be desired) and chess.. isn't that great an extra feature, somehow it just seems too gimmicky.
I guess if MK really floats your boat, but theres also alot of competition; DOA:U, Tekken5, Virtua Fighter 4 Final, SFAC, GGXX #R

I remember all I did with DOA 2 on DC was counter-attacks. The game was simply unbalanced. Two players who are relatively good with counter-attacks would spent most of the time in a match on moving around cuz they were both too afraid to throw an attack and got counter-attack with pretty huge penalty on health.

Fighting games to the general populace are dead. Let them have their fun.

No, fighting games like SF III and GGXX are dead. MKD will be a top selling game this year. Dead genres don't have titles that sell millions.

I hope everyone that has this new interest in the series has tried out MKDA and liked it, because MKD is going to be more of the same gameplay wise. If you're expecting something else you're gonna be disappointed.

My problem with DA was that they tried to match the deeper 3D fighters but failed pretty badly. The throwing, counters and sidestepping was very sloppy and they still haven't got any kind of okizeme in the game. I'd rather them concentrate on the gameplay being simple, fast paced with crazy juggling than try to match other fighters and fail. They need to go with what they're good at, wild gimmicks and just wacky fun, not try to be like everyone else. MKD seems to be going in that direction, with the stage fatalities.
