Insomniac Games, the studio responsible for the critically acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank franchises, has revealed on its LinkedIn profile that the company has grown to over 520 employees.

The studio is currently working on the highly anticipated Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 for PS5, which is scheduled for release in Fall 2023. Its PS5 output so far includes Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.

Insomniac Games was established in 1994 and has a long-standing history with PlayStation, having worked on the Spyro the Dragon and Ratchet and Clank franchises. The company has sold more than 70 million video games in its lengthy career so far, and is based in Burbank, California. Sony acquired the company in 2019.

They're a comic book game studio now, which is quite sad to see.

Ratchet on PS5 was outstanding. They could either do more with that or make some changes to the formula and shake it up a bit, or they could do something new with the Resistance franchise that people have been asking to come back for many years.

Their latest game release was a Ratchet and clank game. And almost no one bought it

Nah, if anything, that ratchet game proved that their internal IPs arent really that memorable. They dont sell. They dont win goty awards. They are mediocre games that review well but are forgotten almost immediately. Spiderman sold almost 40 million. Ratchet sold a million. Its a gigantic waste of 2 years of insomniacs time. Had that time gone into Spiderman 2, we wouldve seen it earlier and it wouldve sold and been received a lot better.

No one is telling them to make boring soulless comic book games. Arkham Games were goty material despite being comic book. That is what Insomniac should be chasing. ND and Sucker Punch left their Crash, Jak and Sly Cooper roots behind. Time for Insomniac to do the same and kill ratchet forever.

Yeah but 5 people want a new Resistance game so you're wrong.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.

Nothing sad about it, imo. I wanted a kickass Spider-man fan for a couple of decades and all I got was that crap Activision shoveled out every few years. Insomniac at least recognized that the the superhero design template had already been created by Rocksteady and took that and implemented their own version of it with their Spider-man. Made for a fantastic game.

But if your not into comic book games then I could see how it wouldn't appeal to you. Thankfully, I don't think Insomniac will only ever make comic book games.

They have multiple locations, so I'm surprised they weren't that big already given the quality of their regular releases.

So being forgotten means it isn't good? Most of their IPs are fantastic and are about gameplay rather than spectacle.

Ratchet is worked by a much smaller team and filled an early next gen ps5 exclusive niche

It served its purpose and sold well

If these 500 devs didnt waste their time on Miles DLC and Ratchet, Spiderman 2 wouldve come out by holiday 2021 or spring 2022 at best. serving the same purpose.

I wish them the best but I'll always be hopeful for a Resistance reboot. That IP has potential and Sony is lacking in the FPS department, however now that Sony acquired Bungie I don't think we'll ever get another FPS experience from other studios :messenger_confused:

Miles sold over 10 million+ copies lol how is that a waste?

They played it well imo. Miles gets released in the interim, whilst ps5 stock gets sorted out for a proper next gen spiderman 2 available for more people with a big release to sell consoles.

I'm no so sure that the employee count on the LinkedIn profile is all that reliable.
Yeah probably not exact as some folks may forget to update their linkedin after they leave a company, but not too far off especially for a company the size of insomniac.

Miles sold well, but ratchet did not. Im sure Sony wouldve taken a full priced $70 game selling 30 million instead of a $40-50 DLC selling 10 million.

That’s not how it works, the more ambitious sequel needed more dev time and Sony needed early ps5 content

Miles and ratchet filled that role
More time to do what exactly? you need devs to be working on one product. If 90% of their team was working on the DLC and Ratchet then they werent working on spiderman 2.

And GG and SSM both took 4.5 to 5 years and released two very samey sequels. What was ambitious about those games aside from their length and content?

Sony's fucked up a lot of these titles by not starting dev right away. Days Gone, Death Stranding 2, Spiderman 2 shouldve gone in dev the day after the first game shipped. Bend took three years to release a logo while wasting time on a days gone 2 pitch and an uncharted reboot that didnt go anywhere. no idea, why kojima who made death stranding 1 in 3.5 years has taken 3.5 years to release just one short teaser. same goes for insomniac with spiderman 2. they have too many projects in the cooker and its all coming at the expense of their main project.
