Then I should sell my new apple tv since all is get is "an error occurre loading this content"

Old ATV works fivne cuz it never had that network setting crap. Does the old TV stream likenthe new ATV?

The manual says that the new ATV is not compatible with all ISPs(DNS) is the major problem.

i tried Google's free DNS which are 8.8.4.4 and 8.8.8.8 and i'm still getting the same errors :( i don't understand why previews work but full length movies don't.

on the other hand; all of my friends that are using other ISP don't have a single problem.

sounds like it's an ISP problem....the the customer service is so stupid! yet the first gen Apple TV work fine on both.

Is Apple TV worth it? Can I stream .mkv files from my PC?

yes

no go on mkv but if all of your content is ripped to itunes(h.264) then the Apple TV is a no brainer. Out of all the media streamers I have used it has the best UI and is easiest to use.

I got one of these over the holiday. It's alright but nothing amazing if you got other things like it (PS3 with netflix and video sharing). It's a nice and easy way to get video into unwired places though.

The airplay thing is really slick though. Completely unneccesary, but its hard to go back to the dock to play music after using this. I almost want to get another one for the bedroom just for this

Netflix and Youtube don't work on mine. At all. Sometimes it will get the tile/header info, sometimes the movie will start, then hang forever. Most times it won't even connect.

I have tried changing the DNS entries to public ones, put the Apple TV in the DMZ, everything you can think of. NO DICE.

It seems like it's a really common problem, with no clear solution and ZERO acknowledgment from Apple (compounded by Apple fanboys on the support forums telling complainants it's effectively their own fault.)

Anyone have any idea how to fix it? This is my last hope before returning it for a Boxee/Roku whatever. Seems like it might be a simple network/DNS/IP issue.

Update, not that anyone cares, but if they do, here's the solution:

Disabled Airplay. Deleted Mac Mini from connected devices.

:/

XBMC is on jailbroken Apple TV btw.

I don't encode or rip my movies, so I assume this is kinda useless to me right? It doesn't enable browser/Hulu, anything like that? I just want it to be a streaming terminal.

And with that news, I've ordered an Apple TV.

Any guides on jailbreaking and installing xbmc? Also, are there any web browsers available for it?

It has been available for a couple of weeks but I hear that it doesn't work on the latest firmware unless you're keeping it tethered. Any update to that?

One important thing is to not use Google or Open DNS, as it seems the CDNs that the Apple TV uses use dns as a means of distributing geographic load. If your ISP has shitty DNS you can try to find another semilocal dns server and use that.

I've had much better luck since reverting to my ISPs DNS on my router and setting it to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 on any other devices.

Also, AirFlick on OS X is great for sending mp4 streams to an Apple TV. It's good enough until AirPlay is supported everywhere.

UPDATE 2:

Stopped working again. I am sick of this POS. The Apple forums are lousy with people having the same problem.

In theory, it could be the best Netflix player. In practice, it's the worst.

Sorry that you're having these issues. I use my AppleTV for Netflix constantly, and I'm not sure I've ever even had a stutter. HD, SD, both no problem. It's easily my favorite of the streaming platforms I have (360 and Wii being the others).

I would get a new one from Apple, and if you're still having the problems it has to be some issues between the box and your network.

+1

My Apple TV2 has been flawless. Would definitely suggest an exchange for a new one

Replaced hardware already. It's 100% a DNS issue - and a really common one. Apple forums are full of it. Genius Bar is no use.

The issue is how Apple talks to Netflix. Some of us are in a hole. Probably need to wait for 4.3 for a fix.

I wonder if it's a similar issue to how Netflix has trouble on my iPhone when I'm on wifi but works fine with 3G. Man that would suck cuz I bought one for XBMC with Netflix on the side but I've been out of town for two weeks with another week and a half to go. So I can't test it at home at all. It works great at the hotel but that does me no good if it doesn't work at home.

Router? Try a different one, upgrade the firmware, or connect it directly from your modem to test.

Works fine for me. I've had to reboot it once, that's about it. Does the ISP matter? I have Comcast.
It's a DNS issue so it sorta is an ISP dependent. I resolved my iPhone by switching to a different DNS. Netflix never has trouble on any other device either. So it's hard to say who is at fault. I wouldn't blame the ISP immediately.

Interesting...

http://www.ahirsbrunner.com/journal...ng-with-touch-like-behavior-for-the-appl.html

I've been noticing that occasionally, when I choose to watch something using an Apple TV 2, it will display a wiggling podcast (or other) icon. The same kind of wiggling you get on an iPhone or an iPad when you select an app. This grabbed my attention, and by the time I could find a camera, the screensaver had kicked in, and I couldn't reproduce it. Well I finally figured out how to regularly get the AppleTV into this mode, and when I did, I also found that I could reorganize the icons just like you can organize apps on iOS. All of this is done just using the Harmony remote which is key in getting the AppleTV 2 into this mode as it's only when a specific set of IR commands are issued to the other devices in my AV setup.

So, is this behavior intentionally included for future use(s)? Does everyone know about this but me? Or is this simply an oversight and this iOS code was never intended to be executed without a touch screen?

It's the way Apple and Netflix talk to each other. I ended up manually selecting non-Google public DNS and that fixed it. It's been working solidly since. The weird thing is Apple forums. It's the least helpful place for some of this stuff.

Now my Apple TV is awesome again. So weird that it works perfectly well for EVERYONE on startup (with that same problem).

I noticed my Tivo Series 3 Netflix got more reliable too, so it seems connected.

So Apple TV now has NBA League Pass and MLB.tv:
http://www.tuaw.com/2011/03/09/apple-tv-update-adds-mlb-nba-streaming/

Is Apple developing these apps themselves, or are they giving secret SDKs to select developers?

Wait, Apple didn't fix the version numbering still? Bleh. So ATV2 4.2 = iOS 4.3? Why do you have to be confusing Apple?

XBMC w/ Navi-X makes the new AppleTV2 more than worth it. Navi-X is sick beyond words.

Got a link to Navi-X? Not familiar with it.

Streaming any apps video from my iPad to my ATV2 is a great feature. Also, love being able to stream my entire iTunes library to my iOS devices without 3rd party apps. Works so much better now.

Anyone notice that the Youtube app on ATV2 doesn't sort your subscriptions by date after the update?

Ooh!

the update includes 5.1 Dolby sound for Netflix streaming, an improved onscreen keyboard, new slideshow themes, and the souped-up AirPlay feature to work with iOS 4.3 devices. Lots to enjoy!

Man, kind of want one now.
If only it had Amazon On-Demand as well, though I guess that will never happen.

Just got a new HDTV with HDMI finally. Tempted to get an Apple TV now. I have been opposed to downloading my movies since I like having the physical copy, but am tempted to get one just to buy TV shows to stream to the TV. Is the quality good for TV shows?

Just applied their new update.

Apple TV Software Update 4.3 features

Purchase TV shows on Apple TV. Shows purchased on Apple TV can be re-downloaded on other iOS devices. Shows purchased on other iOS devices or with iTunes automatically show up as available to play on Apple TV.

Browse and watch millions of user-uploaded videos found on the Vimeo service, for free.

Vimeo is a pretty awesome update if you ask me. Looks and works great too.

Not really a necrobump. After a brief period of working solidly, my apple tv went back to being a total piece of shit. Before getting mad about this sweeping statement, just go check apple's own forums on the matter. It is the single most unreliable piece of equipment I have ever bought and this is apparently the case for thousands and thousands of people.

I think I will just hack it and be done with it. What's a good hack to incorporate Netflix?

Edit: google informs me 4.4 came out the day before yesterday. Will try that first.
